Book excerpt: In the various textile manufacturing departments from opening to weaving or knitting, economical production and good product quality usually require the maintenance and automatic regulation of relative humidity at levels somewhere between 50 and 80 per cent. Temperature is usually maintained at 75 F or above for good fiber manipulation, the desirable maximum being largely a matter of comfort. Examples are given of the drying effect of heat and the cooling effect of evaporation. The benefits of air conditioning in the manufacture and testing of textiles are reviewed. Principal types and functions of humidifying and air conditioning systems suited to textile mill use are classified. The ASTM standard atmosphere for textile testing is defended.
