Book excerpt: Innumerable books have been published on the two most famous fighter aircraft of all time, the Supermarine Spitfire and the Messerschmitt Bf109. But books setting out to tell the story of both aircraft are very much rarer - probably fewer than the fingers of one hand. Yet their joint story is one which bears retelling since both were essential to the air campaigns of World War Two.Incredibly, the men who designed them lacked any experience of designing a modern fighter. R J Mitchell had begun his career working on industrial steam locomotives, Willy Messerschmitt had cut his aeronautical teeth on light and fragile gliders and sporting planes. Yet both men not only managed to devise aircraft which could hold their own in a world where other designs went from state-of-the-art to obsolete in a staggeringly short time, but their fighters remained competitive over six years of front-line combat. Despite the different ways their creators approached their daunting tasks and the obstacles each faced in acceptance by the services for which they were designed, they proved to be so closely matched that neither side gained a decisive advantage in a titanic struggle. Had either of them not matched up to its opponent so well, then the air war would have been a one-sided catastrophe ending in a quick defeat for the Allies or the Axis powers, and the course of twentieth century history would have been changed beyond recognition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Supermarine Spitfire was indeed a remarkable aircraft. It was already a legend in the making when the first Mk I machines began to roll off the assembly lines. The Spitfire was one of the classic British fighters in which the famous few bravely faced the mighty Luftwaffe. Although the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was considered superior in certain areas of flight performance, it was the Spitfire that eventually prevailed and helped crush the numerically superior enemy. In this book the reader will find clearly marked areas of skin sections where flush riveting was used. The Spitfire Mk. IXs, as well as other models of the fighter, were often assembled using a variety of parts, including those originally designed for earlier versions of the fighter. About Top Drawings: This series of highly illustrated books present detailed scale drawings of aircraft and vehicles, with supporting color profile artwork. With detailed captions on the history, combat action and development of each machine, each volume is an exceptional reference tool for modelers.

Originally designed during the 1930s, and a contemporary of the equally-legendary Supermarine Spitfire, it was vitally important to Germanys Luftwaffe and was flown in combat by the highest-scoring fighter pilots in history. It was in service throughout the Second World War and was built in a number of significant versions that proved to be worthy adversaries of the very best of the Allied warplanes that it flew against. Bf 109s operated in all the major areas of conflict where German forces were engaged in combat and, in modified form, the type even had a post-war career in several countries that extended well into the 1950s.

The Bf 109 served in every theater of the war, particularly in the invasion of France and the Low Countries, the Battle of Britain and the invasion of the Soviet Union, the Mediterranean and with Rommel in North Africa. In the later years of the war, the Bf 109 fought with success in the defense of Germany against the Allied bombers. The Bf 109 was the most produced fighter aircraft in history and more aerial kills were made with this fighter than any other aircraft. In this selection of unrivaled images collected over many years, and now part of Frontline's new War in the Air series, the operations of this famous aircraft in the early part of the Second World War are portrayed and brought to life.

Book excerpt: This is the story of how R J Mitchell’s design for a single-engined fighter became the legend that is the Spitfire. Earning both admiration and gratitude for its exploits in the Battle of Britain over the southern skies of England in the summer of 1940 against the overwhelming might of the German Luftwaffe, this amazing aeroplane went on to become a versatile and adaptable asset that earned it the accolade of being the best fighter aircraft of WWII. Not just an air-defence fighter, this aesthetically pleasing plane has received plaudits for its capabilities as both a fighter-bomber and a fast, high-flying reconnaissance aircraft. The Spitfire is a lasting tribute to the memory of all those brave airmen who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of their country. Outnumbered in terms of aircraft during the war, the legendary Supermarine Spitfire’s were mainly flown by young men barely out of school, whose skill, courage and fortitude overcame tremendous odds. These RAF pilots became known as ‘The Few’ and among them was a young Spitfire pilot, Geoffrey Wellum, nicknamed ‘Boy’ on his first squadron because of his tender years. Within three years he was grounded, mentally and physically exhausted by the rigours of war. This book celebrates the remarkable achievements of this aircraft and also features a chapter on Geoffrey Wellum.

Download or read book Spitfire II V vs Bf 109F written by Tony Holmes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-23 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With stunning artwork and detailed analysis, this volume provides a pilot's view of the dramatic clashes between these two legendary fighters, as some of the most gifted and 'big name' aces of World War II went head to head in the skies of North-West Europe. As the Battle of Britain approached its conclusion, two new versions of the famous Spitfire and Messerschmitt Bf 109 arrived on the scene. The RAF could see that the Luftwaffe were stepping down their incursions into British airspace, and went on to the offensive. The Spitfire Mark II, and increasingly the Mark V, would fly over the picturesque English channel in fighter sweeps, or to escort vulnerable Blenheim bombers – waiting for them was the Bf 109F 'Friedrich'. Yet despite the reversal of offensive and defensive dispositions, and despite the Luftwaffe deploying the bulk of their fighter strength to the Eastern Front in 1941, the Jagdflieger were able to inflict severe losses on their RAF counterparts.
