  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book T J Wilcox written by T. J. Wilcox and published by Hatje Cantz Verlag. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the fault of the new studio on the eighteenth floor: at first, the fascinating view of the Manhattan skyline, seen from his studio on Union Square, distracted T. J. Wilcox from work but ultimately inspired him to create In the Air: using sixty thousand individual photographs, one shot every second by four cameras over a period of fifteen hours, Wilcox assembled a half-hour-long 'film in the round'. Projected onto a screen, the film completely surrounds the viewer. On top of this three-hundred-and-sixty degree panorama, the artist layers six short features [including four] ... about a variety of individuals from the city: Antonio Lopez, the fashion designer who lost his life to AIDS but was an inspiration to the teenaged Wilcox. His former apartment is visible from Wilcox's new studio. In Silver Cloud we see Andy Warhol during a performance. Precious Mettle recounts the complex life of Gloria Vanderbilt, socialite, fashion designer and artist. In a moving short film, the superintendent of the studio's building tells of his experience on 9/11.

  • ISBN : 9780615154992
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book A Legacy of Art written by Carol Lowrey and published by Hudson Hills. This book was released on 2007 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, a Gilded Age mansion on the south side of New York City's Gramercy Park has been home to the National Arts Club (NAC), its magnificent interior a refuge from hectic city life. In this special catalog, Lowrey, curator of the club's permanent collection, documents selected works by Artist Life Members, artists who were given lifetime memberships in the club in exchange for one of their works (the program ended in 1950 with the advent of the abstract expressionists). The father of well-known American sculptor Alexander Calder, Alexander Stirling Calder, was an Artist Life Member, and his sculpture of the painter George Bellows is among the many artworks included here. Also featured are an A-to-Z listing of Artist Life Members and a brief history of the NAC. The catalog section includes full-color reproductions and descriptions of the artworks as well as brief biographies of the artist. Many members' works show European influences, particularly impressionism and the Barbizon school, while others are distinctly American, as in the Ash Can school. A fine and fitting tribute to the NAC legacy that will be of interest to club, academic, and large public libraries. 75 colour & 175 b/w illustrations

Book H lio Oiticica

    Book Details:
  • Author : Irene V. Small
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2016-02-03
  • ISBN : 022626033X
  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book H lio Oiticica written by Irene V. Small and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2016-02-03 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hélio Oiticica (1937–80) was one of the most brilliant Brazilian artists of the 1960s and 1970s. He was a forerunner of participatory art, and his melding of geometric abstraction and bodily engagement has influenced contemporary artists from Cildo Meireles and Ricardo Basbaum to Gabriel Orozco, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, and Olafur Eliasson. This book examines Oiticica’s impressive works against the backdrop of Brazil’s dramatic postwar push for modernization. From Oiticica’s late 1950s experiments with painting and color to his mid-1960s wearable Parangolés, Small traces a series of artistic procedures that foreground the activation of the spectator. Analyzing works, propositions, and a wealth of archival material, she shows how Oiticica’s practice recast—in a sense “folded”—Brazil’s utopian vision of progress as well as the legacy of European constructive art. Ultimately, the book argues that the effectiveness of Oiticica’s participatory works stems not from a renunciation of art, but rather from their ability to produce epistemological models that reimagine the traditional boundaries between art and life.
