Download or read book Theory and Application of Quantum Based Interatomic Potentials in Metals and Alloys written by John A. Moriarty and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomistic computer simulations are often at the heart of modern attempts to predict and understand the physical properties of real materials, including the vast domain of metals and alloys. Historically, highly simplified empirical potentials have been used to provide the interatomic forces needed to perform such simulations, but true predictive power in these materials emanates from fundamental quantum mechanics. In metals and alloys especially, a viable path forward to the vastly larger length and time scales offered by empirical potentials, while retaining the predictive power of quantum mechanics, is to course-grain the underlying electronic structure of the material and systematically derive quantum-based interatomic potentials from first-principles. This book spans the entire process from foundation in fundamental theory, to the development of accurate quantum-based potentials for real materials, to the wide-spread application of the potentials to the atomistic simulation of structural, thermodynamic, defect and mechanical properties of metals and alloys.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ischemic optic neuropathy, often referred to as a stroke of the optic nerve, is one of the major causes of visual impairment or loss of vision. Yet it is a highly controversial and confusing subject because of the general lack of in-depth scientific understanding of the subject. In this book the leading authority in the field describes in detail the current knowledge about the different forms of the often devastating disease. Insights into the underlying pathogenesis and peculiar clinical features are given, leading the reader to the most appropriate way of management. This information will help any physician dealing with patients who suffer from sudden loss of vision.
Download or read book Neoplatonism and Gnosticism written by Richard T. Wallis and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades our view of Gnosticism has been revolutionized by the discovery of a Coptic Gnostic library at Nag-Hammadi, Egypt. Currently, Gnosticism is seen as a phenomenon extending far beyond Christianity and displaying a strong Platonic influence. The opposition between the two systems was certainly not as sharp as Plotinus claimed. Where, why, and how the ideological lines were drawn is discussed in the light of the new historical evidence.

Download or read book The Concepts of the Divine in the Greek Magical Papyri written by Eleni Pachoumi and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2017-05-05 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleni Pachoumi looks at the concepts of the divine in the Greek magical papyri by way of a careful and detailed analysis of ritual practices and spells. Her aim is to uncover the underlying religious, philosophical and mystical parallelisms and influences on the Greek magical papyri. She starts by examining the religious and philosophical concept of the personal daimon and the union of the individual with his personal daimon through the magico-theurgic ritual of systasis. She then goes on to analyze the religious concept of paredros as the divine "assistant" and the various relationships between paredros, the divine and the individual. To round off, she studies the concept of the divine through the manifold religious and philosophical assimilations mainly between Greek, Egyptian, Hellenized gods and divine abstract concepts of Jewish origins.

Download or read book Ludwig Holberg A European Writer written by Rossel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ludvig Holberg is the most important man of letters in eighteenth-century Denmark-Norway and is often referred to as the father of Danish and Norwegian Literature, the Molière of the North, the founder of Scandinavian drama, or even as the first Scandinavian feminist. In all his writings - apart from being a dramatist in his own right - he excelled as a satirist, historian and essayist, Holberg is a true child of the Enlightenment advocating tolerance and moderation. At the same time, however, he transgressed its parameters. He introduced a series of classical genres but also violated their rules; he generally supported absolute monarchy but criticized its deficiencies, sometimes with subtlety, sometimes openly and relentlessly when, for instance, aiming his satire at the outdated educational system. Above all, Holberg was a towering cosmopolitan figure in eighteenth-century intellectual life, extremely well-read not only in the classics but also in contemporary literature. Furthermore, he was one of the most avid travelers of his time. He saw himself foremost as a European writer, attacking provincialism and narrow-mindedness wherever he encountered it. Holberg was strongly influenced by the European intellectual tradition and, in return also impacted literary trends abroad. This volume, written by experts from various countries, attempts to place Holberg in this international context. It highlights both the European influence on him and the influence he exerted in his own time as well as the fascination he holds to this very day because of his probing, critical mind, complex personality and, above all, because of the purely artistic quality and modernity found particularly in his immortal comedies.
