Book excerpt: This study investigates the place of sexuality in the writings of Andre Gide. Focusing on his writing of the 1920s and 1930s, the years in which Gide wrote most openly about his homosexuality, and also the years of his most notable left-wing political activity, the work interrogates both the political content of his reflections on his homosexuality and the ways in which his sexuality inflected his political interests.

Book America in the French Imaginary 1789 1914

Download or read book America in the French Imaginary 1789 1914 written by Diana R. Hallman and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2022-05-17 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the American Revolution, French observers often viewed the United States as a laboratory for the forging of new practices of liberté and égalité, in affinity with and divergence from France's own Revolutionary ideals and experiences. The volume examines French views through musical/theatrical portrayals of the American Revolution and Republic, soundscapes of the Statue of Liberty, and homages to the glorified figures of Washington, Franklin and Lafayette. Essays investigate paradoxical depictions of slavery in the United States and French Caribbean colonies of 'Amérique'. French critiques of American music and musicians, including the reception of Americanized or Creolized adaptations of European art traditions as well as American popular music and dance, are also presented. The subject of race features prominently in French interpretations of American music and identity. These interpretations see French constructions of the Indigenous American and African American "exotic" that intersect with tropes of noble, pastoral savagery, menacing barbarism, and the "civilizing" potency of French culture. The French reinterpretation of African American music and dance reveals both a revulsion of Black alterity and an attraction to the expressive freedom, and even subversiveness, of these "foreign" forms of music and dance. Contributions include essays by music, dance, theatre and opera scholars, and the volume will be essential reading for students and scholars of these disciplines.

Book Elysian Encounter

Download or read book Elysian Encounter written by G. Norman Laidlaw and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1963 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This cleverly conceived book relates Denis Diderot and Andre Gide to each other as well as to their separate centuries ... Using a binocular approach similar to the double-spotlight technique of the theater, Professor Laidlaw juxtaposes the lives, works, and philosophies of the two French writers. Constant questioning, agnosticism to the deathbed, and voluminous literary output characterize both. Their catholic interests -- in science, in poetry and drama, in Russian ways as well as French behavior -- are similar. [Laidlaw] discusses their common concern with the dilemma of morality and sincerity, their fascination with literal or figurative blindness, their attitudes toward death, their strong sense of paradox, and the delight and inspiration they both drew from foolishness"--

Book excerpt: Most of Andre Gide's richly-varied literary output has long been available to American readers. Only one aspect of his protean career has been lacking in translation: the essays, the publication of which will go far to explain why Gide holds in France such high rank as a critic. Many of the essays in Pretexts: Reflections on Literature and Morality were provoked by events in the cultural and political world of twentieth-century France, a turbulent setting that produced a lasting literature. These essays are vintage Gide, informed by his characteristic spirit his hard brilliance, pointed honesty, and the enduring relevance of his concerns.Readers of his Journals will be prepared for the style, intelligence, and marksmanship that Gide brings to bear in these forty-two articles on life as well as on letters. His range, as always, is broad: a long and moving memoir of his encounters with Oscar Wilde; a series of combats against reactionary nationalists and self-appointed purifiers of morals; estimates of Mallarme, Baudelaire, Proust, Gautier, and Valery, among others; letters to Jacques Riviere, Jean Cocteau, and Francis Jammes; and general essays on art, literature, the theater, and politics.Justin O'Brien, famous for his studies in modern French literature, has written that Gide is "related to La Fontaine and Racine by his essential conciseness and crystalline style, to Montaigne and Goethe by his inquiring mind which reconciled unrest and serenity, to Baudelaire by his lucid, prophetic criticism." O'Brien, who has done so much to bring contemporary French literature to America, supervised the translations in Pretexts: Reflections on Literature and Morality, prepared several of them himself, and contributes an informative general introduction and additional commentary to preface the various sections of this major book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To those so inclined, my long association with the great Sherlock Holmes, may appear at first blush, an incredible journey through life. Valiant knights on a quest to rid the world of evil doers, with the occasional, slaying of a dragon along the way. Truly, a romantic's ideal. After all, what child hasn't dreamt of curing the world's ills and ridding the populace of its criminal element? True, rooming with one of the most remarkable minds of our time, afforded me the privilege of chronicling many of our exciting adventures, but as many of my readers are well aware, Holmes was often churlish and disagreeable when there were no cases to challenge his keen mind. As Holmes would self-pityingly put it, it was during a particularly, cruel and spiteful lull in London's crime rate that I reluctantly, found myself returning to the flat at Baker Street, after completing my consultation at Royal Bethlam Hospital on St. George's Road. As a doctor of medicine, it is normally not my wont or habit to administer to the health and welfare of lunatics, but a colleague was in a quandary, regarding a particular patient and he sought my opinion as to the poor soul's physical, well being. With much trepidation, I allowed myself to be cajoled into paying a visit to Bedlam. So it was that I, upon returning to Baker Street in an already sour mood; caused no doubt, by the deplorable conditions of Bethlam Hospital, that I had little patience with Holmes's, petulant and mean spirited, disposition. Entering the flat, I had no other desire than to scrub the foul stench and oppressive mood off me, and I hung my coat on the back of the door. Holmes lay sprawled on the sofa, browsing the papers, and from the mess of discarded pages scattered about the room, it was obvious that he did not find anything to his liking. Turning his head in my direction, his angry expression, confirmed my fears. "Ah Watson," he remarked sarcastically, swinging upright and tossing the remaining papers in the air. "I trust you had an enjoyable outing?" "Not now, Holmes! I'm in no mood to..." Ignoring my words entirely, Holmes continued to rant on. "Has the Queen offered a proclamation, placing all of London's criminals on holiday? There's not one hint of scandal or conspiracy brewing in any of these rags!" In a fit of tantrum, he punted the newspapers in the air, scattering the fluttering, sheets about the room. "My God Holmes, must you?" Again, ignoring my pleadings, he went on...

Book The Selected Prose of Fernando Pessoa

Download or read book The Selected Prose of Fernando Pessoa written by Fernando Pessoa and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A selection of prose by “Portugal’s greatest writer of the twentieth century . . . as addictive, and endearing, as Borges and Calvino” (The Washington Post Book World). Building on the wonderful Fernando Pessoa & Co.: Selected Poems, which was acclaimed by Booklist as “a beautiful one-volume course in the soul of the twentieth century,” translator Richard Zenith has now edited and translated selections from Pessoa’s prose, offering a second volume of this forgotten master’s flights of imagination and melancholy wit. Though known primarily as a poet, Pessoa wrote prose in several languages and every genre—the novel, short stories, letters, and essays. The pieces collected here span intellectual inquiry, Platonic dialogue, and literary rivalries between Pessoa’s many alter egos—a diverse cast of literary voices he called ‘heteronyms’—who launch movements and write manifestos. There are appreciations of Shakespeare, Dickens, Wilde, and Joyce; critical essays in which one heteronym derides the work of another; experiments with automatic writing; and works that toy with the occult. Also included is a generous selection from Pessoa’s masterpiece, The Book of Disquiet, freshly translated by Richard Zenith from newly discovered materials. Fernando Pessoa was one of the greatest exponents of modernism. The Selected Prose of Fernando Pessoa is an important contribution to literature that brings back to life a forgotten but crucial part of the canon.
