Book American Painters of Yesterday and Today Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Painters of Yesterday and Today Classic Reprint written by Frederic Fairchild Sherman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Painters of Yesterday and Today I do not wish to convey the impression of being insensible to the merits of the large canvases - they are too obvious to permit of their being overlooked by anyone who is at all sensitive to what is most truly beautiful in contemporary American landscape art. In suggesting minor faults which one finds in some, I do not mean to imply that they are common evenin the large canvases or that the smaller pictures which I have chosen to write about here are faultless. However, any inaccuracy in interpretation in a land scape of considerable dimensions is, simply because it involves so much in the way of mere representation, seemingly exaggerated, while a similar defect in a small painting is less likely to be discovered except as one studies it closely. I am not sure either that it is not true that in working a painter senses an inaccurate rendering in a small picture more often than in a large canvas, in the elaboration of which he is absorbed by subtleties of mood and emotion rather than by problems of actiial representation. Thus Murphy's miniature landscapes have, I believe, a more definite aspect of reality while his larger pic tures appeal to us more particularly because of their successful embodiment of spiritual values. Book American Painting and Its Tradition

Download or read book American Painting and Its Tradition written by John C. Van Dyke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Painting and Its Tradition: As Represented by Inness, Wyant, Martin, Homer, La Farge, Whistler, Chase, Alexander, Sargent The painters about whom these chapters are written helped to make up the period in American painting dating, generally, from about 1878 to, say, 1915. That period has practically closed in the sense that a newer generation with different aims and aspirations has come forward, and the men who broke ground years ago in the Society of American Artists have turned their furrow and had their day. Indeed, those I have chosen to write about herein, with the exception of Sargent, have passed on and passed out. Not only their period but their work has ended. We are now beginning to see them in something like historic perspective. Perhaps, then, the time is opportune for speaking of them as a group and of their in uence upon American art. Not all of the one-me new movement originated and died with these nine men. Dozens of painters became identified with American art just after the Centennial, and many of those who came back from Munich and Paris in the late seventies and the early eighties are still living and producing. But while the nine were by no means the whole count they were certainly representative of the movement, and their works speak for almost every phase of it. The value of the movement to American art can be rightly enough judged from them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early American Painters: Illustrated by Examples in the Collection of the New-York Historical Society The study of American portraits will be found to be fairly illustrative of the development of our country itself. To understand aright the work of our early artists, some knowledge must be possessed of the conditions under which the paintings themselves were produced. In 1600 this land was a wilderness undeveloped and uninhabited except by savages. It is true that the continent had been discovered one hundred years before, not in the endeavor to found a new empire but to meet the imperative demand to discover a shorter route to the Indies. It was the tremendous development which came to England under the rule of Elizabeth and her masterful advisers, which started the English, born colonizers, to take possession of the newly found continent. The tide of immigration may be divided very generally into three streams: That of the Puritan English to New England, the Dutch to New Amsterdam, and the English to the South. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our American Artists Mr. Beard went to New York city after he had been painting for awhile, and took a few lessons from his brother James. He then settled in Buffalo for ten years, where he gained a solid local reputation. During that time he painted his picture of a cat with her kittens, the first work he had on the line in the exhibition of the National Academy. It is one of his best pictures. The old cat, which served as a model, was very restless, having no notion of sitting for her portrait, and Mrs. Beard had to hold her. While the artist sketched the outline or laid on the color. It was during his residence in Buffalo that Mr. Beard went to Italy, where he spent two years amid the inspiring influence of Italian art. Two years after his return Mr. Beard settled in New York, where he has remained ever since, paint ing many works of merit and celebrity, and becoming a member of the National Academy, which entitles him to add N. A. To his name. Some years ago he took a long tour in the South and West, spending several months among the savage Indians of Colo rado, Without losing his scalp. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Pictures and Their Painters Our people never were more keenly alive to the value of our native art; all over the country public galleries, dealers and private owners are giving more and more prominence to their American paintings and on all sides there is an awakened interest in American art. To be ignorant of our leading artists is not to be fully abreast of the times. Then, too, no correct valuation of our native work can be gained without reckoning with the, general public, for the public is the final court of appeal. Book American Painting Today Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Painting Today Classic Reprint written by Nathaniel Pousette-Dart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Painting Today Every book which has an innate significance, seems simple because hard work and inspiration have eliminated all unessential material. The idea for this book was an outgrowth of many dynamic discussions held by the Artists for Victory, during World War II. One of these discussions gave rise to a plan to help the creative artists in this country to recognition. It was this concept of awakening the public to the high quality of the work of our artists which gave rise to the idea of a Library of Creative American Art, initiated by this volume. It was not the intent in such a library to establish what might be called an American Style inasmuch as style at its best, is an unconscious quality springing from the beliefs and emotional responses of the individual artist. Indeed, the whole world of today is a source of inspiration to the creative artist. He may be influenced by American Colonial art, by the modern developments in Europe, by Primitive Negro sculpture, by the art of the South Sea Islands or the paintings of India, Iran or Japan. Thus, the paintings reproduced here cover a wide range of expression from the sincere realism of John Sloan to the so-called pure abstractionism of Joseph Albers. In selecting work for reproduction in this book, it was decided that a committee of eminent Museum Directors from many sections of the coun try would be best qualified to make intelligent choices. This decision was in harmony with what a well-known Chicago critic once said, It is for the museum to hunt out the new talent and to invite it, on the basis of a catholic taste and rigorous standards The excellent, in the deepest meaning of that word, is what we are after in speaking of new talent; it will never be found by mass methods. However, since no selection of art by any jury or similar group, however able its members, can ever be wholly objective, the controversial nature of our selections must be recognized as well as the fact that the work of certain deserving artists may very well have been overlooked.
