Book Career as an Automotive Technician

Download or read book Career as an Automotive Technician written by Institute for Career Research and published by . This book was released on 2020-04-15 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IF YOU LOVE CARS, LIKE WORKING with your hands, and have a knack for solving problems, becoming an automotive technician or mechanic is a great career option. Getting started requires less formal education than most other jobs, yet it has the potential to become a rewarding career. Auto technicians and mechanics keep vehicles on the road by providing routine maintenance and doing repairs to correct problems when they occur. On any given day, they could change oil and rotate tires, install alarms and sat-navs, use diagnostic equipment to identify a faulty component, replace worn brakes, adjust timing, rebuild a transmission, and road-test repaired vehicles.Auto technicians and mechanics both have the mechanical ability to work on vehicles. There is one key difference, however, and that is their technical expertise. Vehicles today are increasingly complex, with computers and electronics integrated into nearly every system. Auto technicians are specifically trained to work with computers and other technical aspects of vehicles. This training is important since computerized diagnostics tools have become standard equipment. Once training is complete, auto technicians are certified and earn the designation of "technician." While mechanics do not have the same formal technical training as technicians, there is often little difference in job duties. There are several ways to learn the necessary skills for this work, from an informal apprenticeship to earning an associate degree at a community college. Programs offered by vocational schools are the most popular. These typically last between six months and a year and offer a certificate upon completion. Though relatively short, these programs are intense and packed with a great deal of knowledge and hands-on experience. Regardless of the type and length of formal training, however, on-the-job training is usually needed after graduation to qualify for the best jobs. Employers also prefer candidates with certification from the National Institute for Automotive Excellence. Certification is available in a number of areas, each focused on a specific automotive system, such as automatic transmissions, engine repair, or heating and air conditioning. Those who achieve certification in core areas can earn Master Technician status.Trained and skilled auto technicians and mechanics enjoy a high level of job security. This has become a high-tech career that is always in demand and cannot be outsourced overseas. The job outlook is very good because of a shortage of qualified candidates and the ever-growing love affair between Americans and their cars. Large car dealerships are always looking for good workers and that is where the largest percentage of jobs exists. There are also many jobs at independent repair shops that do general work on all kinds of vehicles, and franchise services that are dedicated to single systems like brakes or transmissions. There are plenty of other opportunities that are less obvious. Delivery services, municipal governments, public transportation departments, taxi companies, car and scooter rentals, and police departments all have fleets of vehicles that need regular service. Plus, there is always the opportunity for self-employment, which is common in this field.Once in the field, you will find success more quickly if you have strong problem-solving skills, pay attention to details, have excellent customer service skills, can work without supervision, and are physically fit. Even if you have no experience, you can start searching for a job today where you can learn the skills in a hands-on setting.

Download or read book Modern Automotive Technology written by James E. Duffy and published by Goodheart-Wilcox Publisher. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Modern Automotive Technology Workbook is two products in one: a text study guide and a shop activity guide. It is designed to help you learn the essential aspects of automotive technology. It does this by highlighting the most important content in the textbook and supplementing this information with in-shop activities (jobs). The first portion of the workbook serves as a study guide for the textbook chapters. The exercises in this section reinforce the material in the textbook, ensuring that you understand both the written and illustrated aspects of automotive technology. Illustrations are used heavily in the workbook. After answering written questions on a subject or assembly, you will often be asked to identify related parts on a simplified illustration. This will help you more fully grasp the written material. The jobs in the second part of the workbook are supplemental hands-on tasks. They provide detailed instructions for a variety of shop activities, such as servicing cylinder heads and brake assemblies. Other jobs cover shop safety, checking vehicle fluids, using service manuals, and servicing ignition systems. All jobs will help you develop the practical skills needed to work in an automotive repair facility. Before beginning any job, read the objective and instructions carefully. Ask your instructor for any possible changes in the job procedures and for help as needed. It is also important to read the related chapters in the text and to review pertinent safety information before you begin any job. As a student of automotive technology, you will find this workbook an essential tool for making your study easier and more interesting.
