Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opening Speech of the ICEDIVE 84 Conference by His Royal Highness Prince Bertil of Sweden I am very pleased to be invited to open the International Conference ICEDIVE 84, dealing with medical and technical problems of diving and related underwater activities in arctic conditions. Until recent times, the arctic was considered astrange and remote area of minor importance. However, in a world with diminishing natural resources, arctic areas have become a region of global importance because of their enormous resources and strategie position. Certain experts believe that more than 50% of oil reserves are "sleeping" in these northern areas which are cold, harsh and hostile to man. Operations in arctic areas are extremely difficult, expensive, and demand high levels of technical, scientific and physiological achievement. One should recall for example, that Alaskan oil investment onIy became economically viable after the 1973-1974 price explosion. Recent political/military troubles in the Gulf have increased interest in the development of polar resources. This conference is unique as it is the first time that medical and technical specialists interested in the problem of diving in arctic conditions have met in an international forum. Development of the arctic resources is a matter of international urgency, and it pleases me that scientists from the USA, Canada, the USSR, Australia and Europe have gathered here in Stockholm to present their experience and to discuss problems in this field.

Download or read book Marine Simulation and Ship Manoeuvrability written by M.S. Chislett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real-time, interactive ship simulators limped onto the scene, in the wake of flight simulators, some years ago. The maritime industries have a long history of conservatism, but this is now changing rapidly. The information age has also swept over ships and shipping, and has been taken to heart to such an extent that, for example, flight simulators now cooperate with ship simulators and import useful new concepts and methodologies. The more than 50 papers contained in this book show what and why. Although traditionally conservative, the marine world is also traditionally international and this has not changed. The papers in the book are by leading authors from all over the world and provide a detailed snap-shot of the rapidly advancing state-of-the-art, together with pointers to the future. The overall theme of MARSIM '96 and therefore also of this book is: Vessel manouevrability and marine simulation research, training and assessment, and includes original papers on topics such as bridge resource management, distant learning and simulators coupled via The Internet, virtual reality, neural networks, rudder-propeller hydrodynamics, prime mover models, squat in shallow water, and many more.

Download or read book Ship Sensors written by R. Glenn Wright and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-29 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When combined with artificial intelligence, advanced computing architectures and enhanced communications, sensor technologies can monitor vessel performance and the adjacent environment to detect conditions that may hinder voyage completion. This book provides insight into the present and future of sensor architectures and configurations that can enhance vessel performance and further improve the safety of navigation. It covers topics such as traditional and expanded sensor functions in engineering and navigation, as well as new sensor capabilities that can provide greater insight into vessel behavior and performance and enhance awareness of passenger, crew and other human activities. Chapters offer background information on typical legacy vessel sensor configurations and current International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements for onboard sensors and future regulatory trends before discussing modern sensors and current- generation “smart” sensors that provide enhanced situational awareness to watchstanders. A vision of next- generation sensors currently being investigated for shipboard use is provided along with long- term trends in quantum sensing and computing that promise radical change across a wide variety of vessel functions. Insight is also given into cybersecurity factors so essential to all sensor systems. Ship Sensors: Conventional, Unmanned and Autonomous is ideal for professional seafarers, maritime academics and university students, and developers of maritime sensors and systems.
