Book Clinical Pathology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Clinical Pathology Classic Reprint written by P. N. Panton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Pathology This book represents an attempt to describe in a reasonable compass such laboratory investigations, whether chemical, histological or bacteriological, as have a practical bearing upon the diagnosis and treatment of disease; to give some account of their meaning, and to assess, so far as possible, their value in practice. Many of the smaller text-books of Clinical Pathology deal with the subject only in part; the complexity of methods in the larger works renders them more suitable to special investigators, and it was felt that a book of intermediate size might be of use to the student and practitioner. The reduction in size has been mainly arrived at by avoidance of a reduplication of methods, in preference to the omission of any essential branch of the subject. Where several methods for the same object are in use, one, or at most two, are described in full: the remainder are omitted altogether. Much of scientific interest has been necessarily sacrificed to the practical application of diagnostic methods, and the book has consequently no pretensions to consideration as anything more than an adjunct to clinical medicine. No list of references is given, and the names of authorities, unless definitely associated with a particular reaction, are for the most part omitted. Download or read book Compend of General Pathology Classic Reprint written by Alfred Edward Thayer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Compend of General Pathology Chapter VI. Is based almost wholly upon a syllabus prepared by Prof. Jas. Ewing, of Cornell Medical College, for one of his classes, and my thanks are due him for permission to use it. I am indebted also to Dr. J. C. Johnston, of the same institution, for valuable hints and for the photographs which illustrate the chapter on neoplasms. The negatives for these and for Figs. 58, 77 and 78 were made by Dr. B. H. Buxton, of Cornell, and kindly loaned by him. The facts of pathology are common property, and the desire to aid the student should characterize every teacher and author; my hope in issuing this and the companion volume is that the facts have been so presented as to accomplish the object cited. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Pathology: A Manual of Autopsy and Laboratory Technique for Students and Physicians The first edition of this book, in spite of numerous typographic errors beyond the control of the writer, was very soon exhausted. An apology is due the many, to whom, during the last ten years, a new edition has been repeatedly promised. The writers only excuse for the failure to fulfill these promises has been the pressure of other work that has prevented such fulfillment. In the final accomplishment of these promises the book has been practically rewritten and more than doubled in size. The autopsy method given in the main text is a composite one, made up from the Rokitansky, Virchow, Chiari and Nauwerck methods, according to the judgment of the writer as to what was the best in these, and put together with modifications and additions arising out of his own experience. The aim has been to offer a method by which an autopsy can be performed with the greatest speed and ease, and at the same time with the greatest completeness, the various steps of the operation following in logical order in such a way that nothing can be lost or destroyed, and thereby revealing a complete picture of the pathologic conditions present. A choice of methods is offered whenever the aims of the examination may be so varied as to make variations in method advantageous. The general order of the autopsy is the same as that given in the Protocol Blank-book, the present book being designed as a guide and reference-book for that. The points to be noted in the examination of each region are given in connection with the method of examination of that region, and represent the condensed special pathology of the latter. This should be of great service to the beginner in autopsy work, as affording a concise but complete guide to the most important conditions of each region. A text-book on Special Pathology should be used as a reference book in connection with these condensed statements of special pathology. The technical methods for microscopic examination given in Part II have been brought up to date, and all recent methods of value included. Original methods have been given in preference to modifications; the latter, when of value, are also mentioned. As a rule that method has been chosen which in the light of the writers laboratory experience has yielded uniform the best results. Book A Manual of Pathology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Pathology Classic Reprint written by Joseph Coats and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 1166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Pathology A desire has been expressed that this posthumous edition of the late Professor Coats's standard work should contain some brief indication of what he did, and what he was, in a life-time full of activity, but too short according to our human estimate for the tasks allotted to it. No more pathetic instance of frustrated hopes found than in. The simple statement that Joseph Coats, working life for nearly a quarter of a century towards a professorship of pathology, should have attained that official status barely five years before his death, and should have inaugurated a new pathological institute, mainly due to his own initiative and enthusiastic endeavours, on October 14th, 1896, to be used for only three seasons under'his direction, amid periods of ill-health, which ended in a fatal result on January 24th, 1899. The life that was thus closed, however, was one of remarkably sustained effort, and of absolute consistency of aim, from first to last. For more than twenty years before he became a professor in the University, Dr. Coats was the mainstay of scientific pathological teach ing in Glasgow. All his attainments, and all his resources, Were devoted consistently, and with marked success, to this one object; and the present volume, as well as the completed pathological institute which is now carried on by his successor, form the more or less permanent memorials of a life-time of arduous labour, carried on among the students of Glasgow University, by one who was as much respected by them as he was by those who later on became his colleagues in an official sense. As the oldest of these, a friend of Dr. Coats from his studentship onwards, and at all times working in co operation with him, I have been asked to write these few lines as a preface to his book. A more detailed notice of the man will be found in the British Medical Journal for 4th February, 1899. Here it is sufficient to recall in a few sentences what has a direct bearing on the present undertaking. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Professor Kyle wrote the fasciculus on Tumors, and Dr. Bevan the article on Bacteriology. In the revision of the work both articles have been somewhat enlarged. But the thoroughness of the original has not demanded any extensive revision. There have been made some additions and a rearrangement of subjects, in order to secure greater conformity with the remainder of the book. In the original, acknowledgment of the assistance was given with the fasciculi; it is now incorporated here. Many of these have been omitted, more especially those referring to the older literature and to the well-known German text-books. In their place, I have added quite a number of English references, which may be of some assistance to those who do not read German and who desire to look up more elaborate discussions of many of the subjects. Unfortunately our own literature is often rather fragmentary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Pathology: A Manual for Students and Practitioners The plan adopted is to follow the tissue from the body to the microscope, to describe the method of making the post mortem and naked eye examinations, and of preparing the various structures for microscopic investigation. The more important changes of each organ are indicated, though all the changes which occur could not possibly be considered in the space at command. In all cases the aim has been' to describe at least the more important typical lesions. In as many instances as possible, illustrations, which are not mere diagrams, are added. Most of the original Drawings have been made from Sections prepared in the course of the work of the Edinburgh University Practical Pathology Class. They may therefore be accepted as representing as faithfully as possible the appearances which may be recognised by any normally intelligent and dexterous student. The copied Drawings, taken from the best sources, are, as far as possible, acknowledged in the descriptions. Book Living Anatomy and Pathology

Download or read book Living Anatomy and Pathology written by Thomas Morgan Rotch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-22 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Living Anatomy and Pathology: The Diagnosis of Diseases in Early Life by the Roentgen Method The Roentgen ray has been largely used as an aid to diagnosis in both early and later life. Its mechanism has been fully explained in various books, but a systematic exposition of the practical results of the Roentgen method of examination has not yet appeared. The purpose of this book is to deal as little as possible with the questions of apparatus and technic and to devote the entire space to the actual clinical teaching of the subject. This teaching is accomplished by means of illustrative plates, by legends corresponding to them, and by a text explanatory of what can really be seen in health and in disease in early life. The book is devoted to the diagnosis of disease and does not deal to any extent with treatment. It is intended to provide a means by which a fair knowledge of the Roentgen method can be acquired by the student when the personal instruction of a skilled Roentgenologist is not available. I believe that in teaching Roentgenology it is of the utmost importance to present illustrations of evident conditions and not to mislead the student with vague descriptions. In the plates I have been careful not to allow any retouching whatever, and I have discarded those which would have to be altered in order to show what would be described in the legends. Unless this is done the plates are reduced to diagrams and lose their value for accuracy and for teaching the student to interpret them independently.
