Book First Aid Dentistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Aid Dentistry Classic Reprint written by Edward P. R. Ryan and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Aid Dentistry This book has been designed for medical and dental practitioners and students, for nurses; and especially for hospital corps men of the military and naval service and for all who are called upon to administer relief from dental pain, where the services of a dental surgeon cannot be obtained. The impulse prompting this book was not to multiply books, but arose from the writer's belief and that expressed by many practitioners, both medical and dental, that this hand-book is needed by those it is intended to serve. The extent and scope of the methods described are limited to First Aid, which will relieve the patient from suffering until a dental surgeon may complete the treatment. A minimum number of instruments is recommended and their use shown and described. The methods used are simple and the descriptions have been written in the simplest words, technical terms being eliminated as much as possible; all methods used can be accomplished on board ship or in the field or in any hospital or medical office. Due credit is given the works of modern writers, which have been consulted and without them it would have been impossible to accomplish what has been done. The gratitude of the writer is here expressed to Captain J. R. Harris, M. C., U. S. Army, for valuable suggestions and assistance; and special credit is due Mr. H. A. Utter for photos from which these illustrations were made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Aids to Dental Anatomy and Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Aids to Dental Anatomy and Physiology Classic Reprint written by Arthur S. Underwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aids to Dental Anatomy and Physiology Teeth have been defined by Professor Owen as being firm substances attached to the parietes of the beginning of the alimentary canal, adapted for seizing, tearing, lacerating, dividing, and triturating food. The chief mechanical agents in digestion.' This account of teeth is scarcely a definition; it is true of many, indeed of most, teeth, but it is certainly not true of all. Teeth are not always situated nor always used in the way described in the definition. There are many teeth that never erupt at all, and are never useful to their possessor for any purpose whatever - such, for instance, as the teeth of the baleen whales, the incisors of the female narwhal, dugong (and the mandibular teeth of the latter animal), and many other instances. Then teeth that no one would hesitate to classify as teeth are found in patho logical cysts, far from the scene of mastication; and if we fall back upon shape and structure for a definition, we should be forced to include the placoid scales of the shark tribe. Which, although situated on the outer skin of the animal, are structurally practically identical with its teeth. Excerpt: ... antiseptic dressings, be so far improved that organization will take place, and the cavity eventually be soundly filled. diseases of the periosteum. Congenital malformations of the periosteum are few. Follicular odontomes might be counted as such, and the persistence of parts of the enamel organ, as the so-called glands of Serres. Fibromata or epulides usually arise from the dental periosteum, but will be described with tumours of the gum (seo p. 91) and myeloid sarcomata (see p. 105). Dental cysts are produced by the irritation of the periosteum by septic matter from dead teeth, causing growth of the glands of Serres. First there is an ordinary chronic inflammation and a formation of granulation tissue; then the epithelial cells proliferate, those on the surface of the mass forming long outgrowths. At this stage the mass of epithelial cells and granulation tissue is spoken of as an epithelial root tumour. Later degeneration of the cells in the centre takes place, to form an albuminous fluid containing much cholesterine, and so the dental cyst is produced. This process continues, and quite a large cyst with fluid contents, and lined internally with degenerating epithelium, then growing epithelium, and outermost of all granulation tissue, may be found. The bony parts around will be absorbed on the inner side by rarefying osteitis, and built up on the outer side by osteoplastic periostitis, so that the bone appears to be expanded. Usually, after a while, the rarefying exceeds the building up, and so the bony wall is perforated. Such a cyst will cause no pain, heat, nor redness of the parts, but will slowly increase in size, presenting at first a hard, rounded outline (liable to be mistaken for an osteoma, though the latter are irregular, ..

Book A System of Dental Surgery Classic Reprint

Download or read book A System of Dental Surgery Classic Reprint written by John Tomes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Dental Surgery At the time I undertook to write the present volume, the museums in which an extended series of young skulls would be likely to be found were visited, but without success. So far as I could learn, no such series existed. It therefore became necessary to make a collection, taking care that the age of each specimen Should, if possible, be ascertained. This has been done, and the preparations comprised in the collection are sufficiently numerous to allow of deductions being made from the characters they present. But should the conclusions drawn from the study of these ultimately prove, in some respects, incorrect, the want of accuracy can be substantiated by the study of a still more extended Series only. But until such a collection is made, it will be safer to adopt the conditions of the preparations at present at my disposal, as fair examples of the states of the dental appa ratus at the several ages, than to assume that the opinions generally extant, when at variance with them, are in all cases correct. Feeling that this course is the more likely one to lead to a correct knowledge of the subject, I Shall, in the following pages, describe the conditions presented by individual specimens, selecting such as appear most typical of the ages chosen for description. Book The Science and Practice of Dental Surgery Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Science and Practice of Dental Surgery Classic Reprint written by Norman Godfrey Bennett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science and Practice of Dental Surgery IN submitting this work to my colleagues in the Dental Profession, I feel that a few intro ductory remarks may not be out of place. Dental Surgery has advanced so rapidly Within recent years, both in the many branches of science on which it is based and in the intricacies of manipu lative procedure, that the production of a new comprehensive work by a single writer has become almost an impossibility. Certain defects are usually associated with, if not necessarily inherent in, a'work by many writers, and one object that I have had in mind, from the commencement of the long period during which the work has been as continuously in hand as the demands of other duties permitted, has been to eliminate these defects as far as possible. I have endeavoured to impart unity of conception and style to the whole, and to prevent overlapping except where it seemed permissible that a particular subject should be presented from different points of view. Cross-references have been liberally inserted. Another object that I have had in view has been to combine the scientific with the practical, for neither is of much value to the practitioner without the other, and in a work of this kind it is desirable that their mutual interdependence should be brought prominently before the reader. The work does not represent any particular school of thought; the contributors belong not only to the United Kingdom but to the most distant parts of the Dominions beyond the Seas, and an effort has been made to include everything in pathology or practice, from whatever country or source, that might be of value to the modern practitioner. Obsolete theories in pathology or abandoned methods of treatment have been omitted, or only briefly referred to where their historical interest is great. In all these objects I have been well supported by my contributors, and I wish to take this opportunity of thanking them most sincerely for the careful way in which they have considered the principles laid down, and written their chapters in conformity with the scheme that I outlined; and also for allowing me so much freedom in making such alterations as I thought necessary in the interest of uniformity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Practice Dental Surgery The second and fifth parts embody the substance of two papers, by the author, which were written subse quently to the publication of the first edition. The subjects of them came properly within the plan of the present work. The object of the author in the preparation of this edition has been to provide a thorough elementary trea tise on Dental Medicine and Surgery, which might be a text book for the student and a guide to the more inexperienced practitioner, and he hopes that the mod ifications he has introduced, and the additions he has made, will entitle it to be so considered, at least, until an abler hand shall prepare a better. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Operative Dental Surgery I am deeply indebted to the many dental and medical works which have been so comprehensively written by authorities on these subjects, as the main source of my knowledge, coupled with extensive practical investigation of any sections bearing on the art of dentistry, and to constant visits to the Royal 'college of Surgeons' Museum and the South Kensington Natural History Museum; also to the many courtesies extended by many medical and dental practitioners during a period of over twenty years. The large number of specimens at my disposal have been collected during a number of years, and have provided illustra tions for the work. Thirteen of them I drew myself and the remainder I specially prepared for the photographer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extraction of Teeth IN this small work I have endeavoured to treat a subject of interest both to the general and dental practitioner. Although it is a worthy aim to treat teeth where possible by conservative measures, these measures may be persisted in to the detriment of the patients' health, and a distinct line must be recognized between the possibility of restoring to function a tooth or root and the advisability of so doing. Teeth are more easily made comfortable to the patient than to his tissues, and a difficult point often arises in how far the latter and more stringent test is to be considered. Disease in distant parts of the body has not infrequently been traced to teeth filled or crowned, and relieved by their removal. It is with the above points in view that I venture to bring this subject forward. I have to express my obligation to Mr. Tomes and.
