Book excerpt: At EC level the fight against AIDS, one of the major health problems and socioeconomic diseases today, is also part of the specific RTD programme in the field of biomedicine and health. About 600 research teams are collaborating within 30 concerted actions networks that are underpinned by centralised facilities. For example, the epidemiology research networks are monitored by the WHO/EC collaborating centre in St. Maurice, France. Common experiments on animal models, antiviral screening, genetic analysis of multiple virus strains and provision of reagents for vaccine development are also centralized facilities in AIDS research carried out under the principles of subsidiarity and Community added value. This publication presents an overview of their ongoing research activities in disease control and prevention, viro-immunological research, clinical research and vaccine development. Covered by Current Contents, Life Sciences (ISI), volume 38, no. 19, May 1995, p. 11-12 'Therefore, for anyone doing AIDS research, this is a must volume to have in order to understand what the European Community is doing in AIDS research. Highly recommended for all medical and academic libraries.' - H. Robert Malinowsky, The University of Illinois, Chicago, USA. AIDS Book Review Journal, no. 27, June 1996

Download or read book Health Care and Its Financing in the Single European Market written by Reiner Leidl and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health care and its financing will not be harmonized within the European Union (EU). Therefore, the differences between the health systems of the member-states in a Single European Market are gaining in relevance. The process of economic integration also effects health. This book integrates economics, law, social, political and health sciences in the analysis of health care issues in the EU. It covers the development of health systems and policy in the community, the markets for pharmaceuticals and for medical devices, EU-trends in hospital financing, issues in the comparison of financing systems, especially in the field of private expenditures, reforms of health care financing in social security systems and national health services in the EU and cross-border health care between EU member-states. The results feature an up-to date overview on the European dimension of health care and its financing. The book is relevant to experts in health care organizations, policy, industry and research.
Download or read book EURO QUAL written by Bastiaan J. Njio and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The benefits for the professional working within a quality culture are manifold, but even more important, the patient is the final arbiter of quality care. Therefore patient centred aspects of treatment are focused upon in this manual. A quality manual intended for European use has to respect the national regulations and European diversity, and therefore needs to be flexible. The EOQM has been structured according to the treatment of the individual patient, which is what all professionals have in common, and which also is the most important target for quality improvement in orthodontic practice. The EOQM is primarily designed as a stimulus for the orthodontic professional to assess and improve the quality of orthodontic care. A Quality Improvement System (QIS) provides support for starting and maintaining activities. The manual provides tools to systematically assess and develop quality-related actions at individual (patient) treatment level and practice level. A systematic and comprehensive description of the treatment process is essential in order to provide a basis for establishing a QIS. Implementing a QIS will influence the provision of orthodontic care by: * Demonstrating the potentials for development of the organisational elements of orthodontics. * Planning and integrating systematic activities to monitor and improve treatment at the practice level and the patient-related level. Orthodontic treatment process is the central element in this manual. The route taken by an individual patient is described step by step. * Flowcharts describe the orthodontic treatment of the individual patient step by step. * Guidelines indicate what the professional should do at the various steps in order to follow the generally accepted objectives of orthodontics as described in the policy statements. * Indicators are tools to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of treatment. The indicators provide the professional with facts about own performance. The EOQM, provides the orthodontic professional with a model for incorporating quality improvement into daily practice, which is based on European orthodontic consensus and current principles of quality in health care. It can be incorporated in the quality initiatives that are already being developed nationally and vice versa.
Download or read book The Influence of Economic Evaluation Studies on Health Care Decision making written by J. Matthias Schulenburg and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the growing activity in the field of health economics very little is known about the influence of economic evaluation studies on health-care decision-making in the EU member states. Several investigations about the impact of health economic studies on decision-making have been done, but most of them did not involve decision-makers themselves. In this work the results of the EUROMET survey are reported and discussed. To allow an international perspective, different types of decision-makers in nine European countries were surveyed. Besides the extent of knowledge about economic evaluation, the actual and potential use of study results as well as barriers and incentives for the use of economic evaluation studies had been investigated.

Download or read book EURO QUAL written by Gea Heege and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three keywords, Orthodontics, Europe and Quality represent the important issues in this book, describing the EURO-QUAL, BIOMED 1 Programme. In this Programme, individuals and representatives of institutions have been asked to contribute to the discussion on the development of a quality system for orthodontic care. The philosophy of Total Quality Management was adopted and specific emphasis was given to patient quality. When considering how the structure and quality of European orthodontic care continuously can be improved, there are certain conditions which are difficult to modify. From the start this has been realised and respected and therefore the guidelines for the quality are flexible and can be adapted to different conditions. Available knowledge has been bundled and an attempt has been made to understand the reality of orthodontic care in Europe: the product and the process.
Download or read book Quality of Orthodontic Care written by Bastiaan J. Njio and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the EURO-QUAL programme has been to improve the quality of care for the individual patient. At the same time the need for harmonisation of health care in Europe was recognised. This Quality Improvement System (QIS) for orthodontic care in Europe comprises of 'Guidelines for how to implement a QIS' and reference material from the project teams: Financial Resources, Professional Development, Consumer Satisfaction, and Industrial Co-operation. In this respect the following topics are discussed: * The differences and similarities in local (national) quality initiatives. * The use of databases, as a technique to improve quality by comparing one's own performance against that of colleagues. * The influence of the different national systems of funding on both the amount of care provided as well as the quality of care. * The contents and the quality of the educational programmes, at all levels of orthodontic care. * Promotion of patients' rights and responsibilities before, during and after the orthodontic treatment. * A common goal and common language with the industrial partners by which the interaction can be optimised and communication will be enriched. This book provides the background information for the appropriate use of the European Orthodontic Quality Manual (EOQM). Strategies for the implementation of a QIS in orthodontics, taking into account the complex of the outlined aspects, make this book interesting for the orthodontic professional as well as the stakeholders (education, funding, industry, and consumers) in orthodontic care.
Download or read book EUCAMBIS written by Graham Pawelec and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EUCAMBIS was established under BIOMED I in 1994 as an interdisciplinary consortium aiming to advance our understanding of the molecular and cellular bases of ageing of immunosenescence. The project sought to draw together scientists and clinicians from diverse fields including immunology, molecular biology, cell and tumour biology, geriatrics, endocrinology and transplantation biology in order to investigate the impact of ageing on immune responses. The papers collected in this volume illustrate the diversity of the work carried out by the members of EUCAMBIS during its three-and-a-half year existence. This introductory chapter attempts to summarize the results of some of the EUCAMBIS collaborations, with emphasis on the "workshop" approach which was aimed at analysing the expression of "growth arrest" genes in ageing human T lymphocytes.
Download or read book The Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses Batten Disease written by Hans H. Goebel and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Concerted Action on the "Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinoses (NCL)", probably the most frequent group of progressive neurodegenerative disorders in children, has been the subject of a 3-year European Concerted Action (ECA-"NCL"), within the Biomed 2 programme, listed among "Rare diseases". The NCL are a lysosomal disease which have recently been confirmed by important genetic studies on the NCL which revealed a diversity of at least 8 gene loci related to this group of diseases. ECA-"NCL" represents a multi-national, multi-disciplinary network of researchers on the NCL which have provided new data on this group of diseases. In this book, clinical features, neuroradiological and electrophysiological data, morphological aspects, genetic data and biochemical results will be provided by actively engaged researchers on NCL from this Concerted Action, who have also provided major presentations at the two recent International Congresses of NCL: 1996 in Helsinki (NCL-96) and 1998 in Dallas (NCL-98). Thus, this book represents a state of the art written both for active researchers on NCL and other lysosomal and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as for those interested in NCL for other reasons, foremost patients (and their parents). Tables, illustrations, and most recent references will accomplish the text produced and edited by an editorial board consisting of participants of this ECA-"NCL". At the end of this state-of-the-art presentation, future lines of research - including therapies - will be outlined and emphasized what will have to be done to arrive at complete elucidation of this group of progressive neurodegenerative disorders.
