Book The Elements of Agricultural Geology

Download or read book The Elements of Agricultural Geology written by Primrose McConnell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Agricultural Geology: A Scientific Aid to Practical Farming While many writers have thus been laid under contri hutien, as is shown by the footnotes, the more important sections of the volume can be claimed as the result of the author's own investigations, carried on for a great number of years. The method he followed was to procure the sheets of the Geological Survey maps for any district to be studied over or even passed through, and to cut them into small squares and paste them on the leaves of notebooks. With these in his pocket, he has worked over hundreds of farms in various parts of the United Kingdom, watched and noted the various kinds of farming passed on railway journeys or on drives, and collected samples of soil for examination where the maps indicated typical surface deposits. All the information so gathered has been sifted and arranged in the light of his own lifelong practical experience. For the last twenty years he has been farming on the London clay in Essex, and this volume has been prepared in the intervals of leisure in the management of a large holding of mixed husbandry - in the winter evenings, on wet or stormy days, in the summer mornings between sunrise and the beginning of the day's work, and so on the preparation of the manuscript taking ten years in its accomplishment. It is now presented to the public who are interested in scientific farming, as an honest endeavour to help on the development of the most ancient and the most important of all human occupations - agriculture. Book Geology for Engineers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Geology for Engineers Classic Reprint written by Robert Fox Sorsbie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology for Engineers IN these days of specialising in watertight compartments, the bearing of geology in relation to almost every branch Of engineer ing is very frequently neglected or ignored. A knowledge of geology is, however, Of the first importance to the practical engineer, but it is difficult for him to study the application of this science to his requirements Without having recourse to a large number of different textbooks and other works. References to geology which are Often of the greatest practical importance are often almost hidden away or treated in an obscure fashion, where as the engineer requires the needful information to be put before him in a clear and concise manner. To meet this want I have endeavoured to compile the requisite information in one volume, in the hope that it may serve as a handy book of reference. Book Aids to Identification of Geological Formations

Download or read book Aids to Identification of Geological Formations written by Johan August Udden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aids to Identification of Geological Formations By long experience many drillers learn to distinguish, generally quite correctly, the three principal classes of sediments in which most of their work is done, such as shale or clay, sandstone and limestone. The most experienced drillers in any locality have, also, expert knowledge of what we may call the "key rocks" of the field in which they work. They know the rocks that determine the depth at which casing is to be set, or the depth at which the tests for oil or gas must be made. This knowledge of rocks is mostly taught from mouth to mouth, by the head driller to his helpers, entirely without any other guidance than the limited experience of each driller. No aid, so far as I know, has ever been prepared by geologists to help drillers in procuring the information both are eagerly seeking. With the extension of drilling operations to regions of widely different geological formations and conditions, it has become a matter of some urgency that drillers' logs be made with greater accuracy and uniformity than before. The only way to encourage improvement in this direction is to place in the hands of the men who make the "logs," what aid they need. By the use of a few very simple devices, available to all, great improvements in results can be attained without the least loss of time. The present paper is an attempt to present some information, in compact form, that will aid practical and intelligent men to correctly identify materials explored in drilling for oil, gas, or water. It will be found that much of the information here set forth consists of elementary methods and facts drawn from mineralogy and geology. Most drillers are eager to acquire all knowledge they can in these sciences. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. They may be all sandstone, and Show the grains of sand distinctly under a pocket lens. One or more of the beds may contain smoothly worn pebbles, with sand - the same material that constitutes a gravel bed another may be a Shale, so soft and fine-grained that, if ground up and mixed with water, it will make mud suggesting that it might have been formed out of mud. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Geology, Vol. 2 of 2: Theoretical and Practical; Stratigraphical Geology and Palaeontology I have only to add, with my esteemed colleague in his preface to Vol. I., that the changes necessary to bring the science of the last generation into harmony with current knowledge and thought, have been more serious than were anticipated when the revision began. This volume has been entirely re-written, and differs in construction and detail from any known manual; it is hoped that every page will repay the student, if read with care and patience. The Palaeontological analyses through the general text, as well as the tabular deductions, are for the first time fully prepared for English students. Rogers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered at the Meeting of the Association of American Geologists and Naturalists, Held in Washington, May, 1844 Prof. Frederick Hall possessed great ardor in the pursuit of knowl edge, and was one of the earliest cultivators in this country of geology and mineralogy. He was educated at Dartmouth College, became pro feasor of natural philosophy and chemistry in Middlebury College, and afterwards president of Mount Hope College in Maryland, and at the time of his death (which took place at Peoria, Ill.) was professor of chemistry in the medical department of Columbia College, Washington. Of a generous and enthusiastic nature, he manifested the sincerity of his zeal for science and the cause of education, by the very handsome contribution in money and a rich cabinet, which he made a few years ago in aid of the establishment of a new professorship in the respected institution from which he imbibed his strong love for learning. Though not a practical geologist, he was a successful teacher of the science, evinced a lively interest in its advancement, and earnestly encouraged this our present effort to promote its progress in our country. Mr. Nicollet was born in Savoy between Geneva and Mont Blanc. Repairing to Paris about the age of twenty, he applied himself with great enthusiasm to improve, through the resources of that capital, the defects of his early education, and gifted with a fine mathematical ability, and enjoying the lessons and friendship of Laplace, he soon rose to distino tion as a mathematician and astronomer. In his assiduous devotion to his favorite branches, he became the author of several works of merit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
