Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aicha the Mauresque: An Algerian Fantasy The Pilgrim's Rest is a cafe which lies midway between the Ouled Nail country of the south and the port of El Hadj in the north, and from this port, even to-day, the true believers embark for the Mecca. It was in the Pilgrim's Rest that we first spoke, and the time of our speaking was a short period prior to his departure on pilgrimage to the eternal Mecca. I saw him first in the Moorish baths which are built over the hot sulphur springs of the town. At certain times of the day these baths are reserved for women, and the Mauresques, as they call the Arab women, go there with pots of lime cream - with which they remove unsightly hair from their bodies - and of kuhl, and of henna in fine powder, and of perfumes purchased in the Arab market. In the arched rooms they cleanse their bodies according to ritual and apply the primitive cosmetics. They also grasp the opportunity to gossip. Finally, robed in white and modestly veiled, they patter into the sunlight, and they return to their homes so that their husbands may be refreshed by their beauty. At other times of the day the baths are reserved for men. They enter when the heat of the sirocco is ended, and become cleansed of dust and sweat. They also emerge in robes of white. It was while I lay there on the heated stones, my body glistening with droplets of condensed steam and with moisture from the pores of my skin, that he entered and stood for a moment between the arches which gave support to the roof. Book Sex Law and Sovereignty in French Algeria 1830 1930

Download or read book Sex Law and Sovereignty in French Algeria 1830 1930 written by Judith Surkis and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-15 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During more than a century of colonial rule over Algeria, the French state shaped and reshaped the meaning and practice of Muslim law by regulating it and circumscribing it to the domain of family law, while applying the French Civil Code to appropriate the property of Algerians. In Sex, Law, and Sovereignty in French Algeria, 1830–1930, Judith Surkis traces how colonial authorities constructed Muslim legal difference and used it to deny Algerian Muslims full citizenship. In disconnecting Muslim law from property rights, French officials increasingly attached it to the bodies, beliefs, and personhood. Surkis argues that powerful affective attachments to the intimate life of the family and fantasies about Algerian women and the sexual prerogatives of Muslim men, supposedly codified in the practices of polygamy and child marriage, shaped French theories and regulatory practices of Muslim law in fundamental and lasting ways. Women's legal status in particular came to represent the dense relationship between sex and sovereignty in the colony. This book also highlights the ways in which Algerians interacted with and responded to colonial law. Ultimately, this sweeping legal genealogy of French Algeria elucidates how "the Muslim question" in France became—and remains—a question of sex.

  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2005-02-01

Download or read book Stigmata written by Hélène Cixous and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-02-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 'wilful extremist' according to the London Times, Hélène Cixous is hailed as one of the most formidable writers and thinkers of our time. Acclaimed by luminaries such as Jacques Derrida, her writing has nonetheless been misunderstood and misread, to a surprising extent. With the inclusion of Stigmata, one of her greatest works into the Routledge Classics series, this is about to change. Questions that have long concerned her – the self and the other, autobiographies of writing, sexual difference, literary theory, post-colonial theory, death and life – are explored here, woven into a stunning narrative. Displaying a remarkable virtuosity, the work of Cixous is heady stuff indeed: exciting, powerful, moving, and dangerous.

Book Searching for Contemporary Legal Thought

Download or read book Searching for Contemporary Legal Thought written by Justin Desautels-Stein and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, law schools have trained students to 'think like a lawyer'. In these times of legal crisis, both in legal education and in global society, what does that mean for the rest of us? In this book, thirty leading international scholars - including Louis Assier-Andrieu, Marianne Constable, Yves Dezalay, Denise Ferreira da Silva, Bryant Garth, Peter Goodrich, Duncan Kennedy, Martti Koskenniemi, Shaun McVeigh, Samuel Moyn, Annelise Riles, Charles Sabel and William Simon - examine what is distinctive about legal thought. They probe the relation between law and time, law and culture, and legal thought and legal action; the nature of current legal thought; the geography of legal thought; and the conditions for recognition of a new 'contemporary' style of law. This work will help theorists, social scientists, historians and students understand the intellectual context of legal problems, legal doctrine, and jurisprudential trends in the current conjuncture.

Book Races on Display

  • ISBN : 0253000149

Download or read book Races on Display written by Dana S. Hale and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-27 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While European commerce in race was substantial, the colonial trade in ideas of race was highly profitable as well. Looking at official propaganda and commercial representations in France during the Third Republic, this book explores the way the French increased the value of their racial identity at home at the expense of their colonized brothers and sisters. The French did not create the identity-effacing stereotypes of Africans, Arabs, and Indochinese. Instead they refined or remolded these images, and as they did so they redefined and remolded their images of themselves. Focusing on world's fairs, colonial expositions, and mundane manufacturers' trademarks, Races on Display shows not only the prevalence of racial stereotypes, but also how complex these representations prove to be.
