Book Gender Play in the Hebrew Bible

Download or read book Gender Play in the Hebrew Bible written by Amy Kalmanofsky and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the Hebrew Bible often reflects and constructs a world that privileges men, many of its narratives play extensively with the gender norms of the society in which they were written. Drawing from feminist, masculinity and queer studies, Gender-Play in the Hebrew Bible uses close literary analysis to argue that the writers of the Bible intentionally challenge gender norms in order to reveal the dangers of destabilizing societal and theological hierarchies that privilege men and masculinity. This book presents a fascinating argument about the construction and import of gender in the biblical narratives, and will be of great interest to academics in the fields of religion, theology, and Biblical studies as well as gender studies.

Book The Genesis of Marriage A Drama Displaying the Nature and Character of God

Download or read book The Genesis of Marriage A Drama Displaying the Nature and Character of God written by Richard Shenk and published by Authentic Media Inc. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theological exploration of Genesis 2 which renews our vision of the purpose of marriage as the central drama within God's salvation plan. Marriage seems increasingly irrelevant to many people today. But is this a true understanding of marriage? Could it be that God may have expectations for marriage which are distinct from our own, and wholly unaffected by our feelings or debates? If God is the author and definer of marriage, then we must look to the Author to discern its meaning rather than ourselves. The Genesis of Marriage sets out a biblical theology of marriage, grounded in the Marriage Text of Genesis 2:18-25, and investigates how it fits in its own context of Genesis 1 - 3 and the whole of Scripture. Examining the Marriage Text exegetically and theologically, Shenk shows this as the climax and conclusion of the two creation accounts, and explores what this reveals about the nature and character of God. The doctrinal implications of this are then explored, answering such practical questions such as, 'What are the ethics of marriage?' and 'How do we approach the real-world concerns of separation, divorce, and remarriage?'. Shenk's exploration helps dispel our modern disillusionment with marriage, or at least our ideas and beliefs about marriage which may be at odds with God's, to reveal deep truth about the nature and character of God.

Book From Genesis to Revelation God Takes a Bride

Download or read book From Genesis to Revelation God Takes a Bride written by Susan A. Cyre and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-06-02 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the whole of Scripture as the unfolding marriage covenant between God and his people. The book demonstrates that God's marriage to his people is the central theme of the Bible. Eighteenth-century Reformed pastor Jonathan Edwards captured that perspective when he observed: The creation of the world seems to have been especially for this end, that the eternal Son of God might obtain a spouse . . . to whom he might . . . pour forth all that immense fountain of . . . love and grace that was in his heart and that in this way God might be glorified. This book traces the divine marriage from God's promises to Abraham, to the betrothal covenant that includes the Ten Commandments, to Israel's breaking of the covenant as described by the prophets, to the new covenant in Christ, and finally to the consummation of the divine marriage covenant in Revelation at the wedding of the Lamb. God instituted the marriage of a man and a woman in Genesis 2 to be an image of God's divine marriage with his people. Therefore, it is not a coincidence that both the Gospel and marriage are under attack in our culture. Human marriage cannot be rightly understood apart from the Gospel and the Gospel cannot be fully understood apart from marriage. This book enables Christians, whether single or married, to appreciate in a much fuller way the depth and nature of God's love for his bride. Seeing how the divine marriage defines and shapes human marriage also presents a clearer understanding of the spiritual importance of human marriage, inspiring Christians to pursue marriages that more faithfully reflect God's design. This book proclaims Scripture's message of God's unrelenting, irrevocable love for his bride and invites the church to respond. Susan A. Cyre, MDiv, helped found Presbyterians for Faith, Family and Ministry in 1995 and served as its executive director until 2014. She edited its bimonthly publication, Theology Matters. She has authored numerous articles dealing with biblical truth and its intersection with cultural norms. She and her husband live in Virginia.

Book The Foreignness of the Foreign Woman in Proverbs 1 9

Download or read book The Foreignness of the Foreign Woman in Proverbs 1 9 written by Nancy Nam Hoon Tan and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-12-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is on the figure אשה זדה and נכד׳ה, also commonly called the ‘Strange Woman’ in Proverbs 1-9. It is an attempt to understand the meaning which defines her, and the origin and development of her motif. The first part argues against defining her as a sexual predator, but as an ethnic foreigner according to the lexical studies of זד and נכד. It traces her origin within the Hebrew scripture, the legal documents and especially to the DtrH's portrayal of foreign women/wives. Hence, it distinguishes the two motifs: the motif of the adulteress and the motif of the foreign woman; the latter, which symbolizes the temptation to apostasy. The study will then go on to explain how the writer of Proverbs 1-9 employs this motif of the foreign woman in his poetic composition. The second part tracks the development of this motif through the subsequent Jewish Wisdom literature and observes how it changes and loses the ‘foreignness’ of her original motif in Eccl. 7:26; 4Q184; LXX Proverbs; Hebrew Ben Sira; Greek Ben Sira; and finally disappears in Wisdom of Solomon. It proffers to understand this gradual transformation against a background of social and religious change.

Book While the Bridegroom is with them

Download or read book While the Bridegroom is with them written by Marianne Blickenstaff and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-06-09 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreters of Matthew's Parable of the Wedding Feast (22.1-14) typically associate the 'king' with God and then justify his violent attacks against city and guests; interpreters of the Parable of the Ten Virgins (25.1-13) typically associate the 'bridegroom' with Jesus and then justify his extreme rejection of the 'foolish virgins.' Questioning such allegorical interpretations, this study first details how Hebrew, Greek, and Roman texts depict - without requiring allegorical understandings - numerous bridegrooms associated not only with joy but also with violence and death. Second, this project appeals to the disruptive nature of parables, the feminist technique of resisting reading, and the Matthean Jesus's own ethical instructions to argue that in the parables, those who resist violent rulers and uncaring bridegrooms are the ones worthy of the Kingdom. The study then shows how the Matthean Jesus - the brideless, celibate bridegroom -- creates a fictive family by disrupting biological and marital ties, redefining masculinity, and undermining the desirability of marriage and procreation. Book More Conversations on the Porch

Download or read book More Conversations on the Porch written by Beth Lindsay Templeton and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Beth Lindsay Templeton originally created her screened porch as a sanctuary for herself. With its shabby furniture, potted flowers, and tinkling wind chimes, the porch soon became a haven not only for her, but also for other women who craved a sacred refuge to nurture their spirits. It is in this way that powerful conversations with women from the Bible came to Templetons pen, first in Conversations on the Porch and now with this sequel, More Conversations on the Porch. The women gracefully share their stories of faith so others might listen anew in their own worlds. As different women visit Templeton on her porch, scriptures come alive in fresh and insightful ways. The conversations she shares with Jezebel, the Witch of Endor, Joanna, Rhoda, and others not only address issues of women and of the world in general but also demonstrate that biblical womens stories and insights are as vital and important today as they were when their stories were first told. Conversations center on such common challenges as family, courage, compassion, risk taking, using your gifts, curiosity, Gods way, and above all, living in the power of Gods love and grace. With discussion questions and calls to action included, More Conversations on the Porch shares the refreshing and courageous voices of ancient women as they encourage others to embrace life as children of God and continue the inspiring conversations.
