Book Geomorphic Mapping and Ground Penetrating Radar Survey of the Agua Blanca Fault in Valle de Santo Tomas Baja California Mexico

Download or read book Geomorphic Mapping and Ground Penetrating Radar Survey of the Agua Blanca Fault in Valle de Santo Tomas Baja California Mexico written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Agua Blanca fault is interpreted as an active, dextral strike-slip fault in northern Baja California about 100 km south from the U.S.-Mexico border. Tectonically, the Agua Blanca fault is associated with the San Andreas fault system, which comprises the main portion of the transform plate boundary between the Pacific and North American plates. Although there are estimated slip rates for the fault, there is no recorded seismicity. Geomorphic maps at a scale of ~ 1:5,000 were completed within the Valle Santo Tomas. Features characteristic of strike-slip faulting such as deflected streams and shutter ridges suggest the fault is still active and should not be considered abandoned. Ground-penetrating radar surveys were conducted in order to image the fault in the near surface. Based on the GPR data, it is apparent that a greater number of fault splays exist in the shallow subsurface than evidenced at the surface. This suggests that the detailed structure of the Agua Blanca fault consists of a complex system of fault splays and that a main fault strand and several subsidiary faults splays exist in Valle Santo Tomas.

Book Constraining Basin Geometry and Fault Kinematics on the Santo Tom s Segment of the Agua Blanca Fault Through a Combined Geophysical and Structural Study

Download or read book Constraining Basin Geometry and Fault Kinematics on the Santo Tom s Segment of the Agua Blanca Fault Through a Combined Geophysical and Structural Study written by Adam Springer and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The Agua Blanca fault is a major transverse structure of northern Baja California, extending more than 120km east from the Punta Banda ridge near the city of Ensenada to the San Matais Pass in central Baja. Through much of its eastern extent slip on this fault appears to be pure strike slip, however, at the Valle de Santo Tomás the fault makes a ~25°; change in orientation, which coincides with the formation of extensional basins on the fault. Recent evidence of the independent movement of the Baja Micro-plate relative to a stable Southern California Black leads to several possible hypotheses to explain this including: 1)That basins are localized structures, the result of a series of right steps or bends along the dextral Agua Blanca fault. 2)Basins are transtensional, possibly as a result of complexities associated with the northern boundary of the Baja Micro-plate . To test between these hypotheses it was necessary to constrain the fault kinematics on both basin bounding and in-basin faults, well as the basin geometry. This was accomplished through combined structural and geophysical surveys. Data collected suggest that the majority of dip-slip is confined to the Santo Tomás fault bounding the basin to the south, while the Agua Blanca fault bounding the basin to the north is primarily strike slip. This orientation typical in transtensional basins, suggesting that although Valle de Santo Tomás formed at a step over it is not a pull apart basin. Possible explanations for transtension in this area come from the orientation of the Agua Blanca fault in relation to the Baja Micro-plate. Where the fault is close to aligned with the relative motion of the plate there is little transtension, such as in Valle de Agua Blanca, however, where the fault makes a 25° change in orientation and becomes more oblique the motion of the Baja Micro-plate transtension is present.

Book Geomorphic Mapping and Ground Penetrating Radar Survey of the Western Segment of the Agua Blanca Fault Baja California Mexico

Download or read book Geomorphic Mapping and Ground Penetrating Radar Survey of the Western Segment of the Agua Blanca Fault Baja California Mexico written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Agua Blanca fault system is a dextral strike-slip fault system in northwestern Baja California, Mexico. Despite no historic seismic activity, the geomorphology suggests that the fault is active. Geomorphic maps (~1:10,000) were completed within three field areas along the western segment of the main fault. Diagnostic features such as deflected stream channels provide evidence of recent fault activity. The presence of well-developed triangular facets suggests an additional normal component to this strike-slip system. Ground-penetrating radar surveys were conducted to image the fault in the near surface. Many more fault splays were mapped within the sections than were visible at the surface, indicating the complexity of the fault system. Alluvial surfaces were identified within the sections and characterized based on continuity and shape of reflectors.

Book Geology and Geologic Hazards of Northwestern Baja California

Download or read book Geology and Geologic Hazards of Northwestern Baja California written by John Albert Minch and published by San Diego Association of Geologists. This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: San Diego Association of Geologists returns to Baja California with legendary field geologist John Minch. We reexamine geologic hazards including ancient and modern landslides, activity on the Agua Blanca fault, and shoreline erosion. Baja's rapid population growth puts coastal development issues front and center. Three field trip logs are supplemented with new papers and noteworthy historical papers.

Book Geologic Mapping and Ground Penetrating Radar Surveys of the Valle Santo Tom s Segment of the Agua Blanca Fault Baja California Mexico

Download or read book Geologic Mapping and Ground Penetrating Radar Surveys of the Valle Santo Tom s Segment of the Agua Blanca Fault Baja California Mexico written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Valle Santo Tomás is situated on a segment of the Agua Blanca fault (ABF) which is an ~130 km WNW-ESE trending dextral strike-slip fault within the Pacific-North American (PAC- NAM) plate boundary. Although the ABF is thought to be active, evidence for recent seismic activity is scarce. In the Valle Santo Tomás, geologic, geomorphic, and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys were conducted to evaluate the fault segment for features that demonstrate recent movement. Features such as shutter ridges, diverted streams and fault scarps are observed and interpreted to indicate some degree of recent movement. The GPR survey further supports that the fault exists in the shallow subsurface as evidenced by offset beds, rotated hanging wall blocks and a negative flower structure indicating some degree of recent transtensional movement along the Valle Santo Tomás segment of the ABF.
