Book excerpt: Research was conducted in the summers of 1985 and 1986 at the University of Arizona Marana Agricultural Center, with the objectives of (1) determining the best intercropping species combination under near optimum irrigation, using three cereals (sorghum (Sorghum bicolor), maize (Zea mays), and pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum) and three legumes (field bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), and soybean (Glycine max) in all combinations, and (2) identifyng species genotypes best adapted to intercropping. Results from 1985 determined sorghum x soybean as the most appropriate intercropping combination for the environment of the Marana Agricultural Center. In the 1986 cropping season, three sorghum genotypes (Pioneerr 8493, Funks G-522DR, and California IO80H40) were combined with three soybean genotypes (Asgrow A6324, Asgrow A6520, and Rillito), to identify the best genotype combination for intercropping. Both 1985 and 1986 experiments were carried out in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Pearl millet was the cereal with the greatest decrease in yield when intercropped, indicating that this cereal was not a good competitor with legumes. Sorghum was the best cereal competitor with the legumes and soybean was the best legume competitor with the cereals. Among the three sorghum genotypes studied in 1986, only Pioneer 8493 showed higher yield in monocrop whereas the other two genotypes yielded higher in intercropping, indicating some benefit from this system. Including legumes in cropping systems is an important toward advancing soil sustainability, food and nutritional security without compromising soil quality or its production potential. Several textbooks and edited volumes are currently available on general soil fertility or on legumes but‚ to date‚ none have been dedicated to the study of “Legumes for Soil Health and Sustainable Management”. This is important aspect, as the soil, the epidermis of the Earth (geoderma)‚ is the major component of the terrestrial biosphere. This book explores the impacts of legumes on soil health and sustainability, structure and functioning of agro-ecosystems, agronomic productivity and food security, BNF, microbial transformation of soil N and P, plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria, biofertilizers, etc. With the advent of fertilizers, legumes have been sidelined since World War II, which has produced serious consequences for soils and the environment alike. Therefore, legume-based rational cropping/soil management practices must support environmentally and economically sustainable agroecosystems based on (sequential) rotation and intercropping considerations to restore soil health and sustainability. Farmers need to learn how to overcome these constraints if the full benefits of legumes are to be gained. HENDRICKS, who made the basic discoveries and developed a theoretical framework on which the current progress in the field of phytochrome is still largely based. While the earlier development of the phytochrome concept has been covered by a num ber of excellent articles by the original investigators [104,105,33,238] as well as by others who joined the field of phytochrome research later [72, 109, 219], a comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of photomorphogenesis is not available at present. Since it seems to be needed for teaching as well as for researchers I have tried to summarize the present state of the field, reviewing the historical aspects of the phytochrome story only insofar as they are required to understand the present situation. The emphasis of my treatment will be on developmental physiology ("photomorphogenesis") rather than on phytochrome per se.
