Book Design of Appropriate Agroforestry Interventions in Uganda

Download or read book Design of Appropriate Agroforestry Interventions in Uganda written by Sara Namirembe and published by Fountain Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of appropriate agroforesty intervention in Uganda has the potential to improve farmer's livelihoods in line with the national Plan for Modernisation of Agriculture; and district forest services within the decentralised government framework, enable service providers to promote appropriate agroforestry interventions depending on local conditions. It was against this background that this manual was developed. A training needs assessment revealed that extension staff were few and did not have sufficient understanding of the potential gains and pitfalls to adequately advise farmers on a case by case basis. Sara Namirembe was previously a Lecturer in the Department of Community Forestry and Extension, Makerere University, and currently woks in civil society organisational work. Book Handbook on Agroforestry

Download or read book Handbook on Agroforestry written by Lawrence R. Kellimore and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agroforestry is an approach to alternative land use based on deliberate integration of trees with crops and livestock production systems. It combines agricultural and forestry technologies to create more diverse, productive, profitable, healthy and sustainable land-use systems. Agroforestry can include various types of practices, including alley cropping, forest farming, shelterbelts (or timberbelts), riparian buffer strips, and silvopastoral systems. In arid and semi-arid environments, agroforestry systems potentially support livelihood improvement through simultaneous production of food, fodder and firewood without much affecting climate change. Careful selection of species and good management of trees and crops are needed to optimise the production and positive effects within the system and to minimise negative competitive effects. This book gathers the latest research from around the globe in the study of agroforestry and highlights such topics as traditional and modern agroforestry in Mediterranean regions, integration of native genetic resources in agroforestry, women agroforestry practices in refugee settlements, a discussion of the major obstacles that prevent increased agroforestry improvements, and the advantages and constrains of agroforestry systems establishment in various Brazilian biomes.
