Book excerpt: In recent years, food studies scholarship has tended to focus on a number of increasingly abstract, largely unquestioned concepts with regard to how capital, markets and states organize and operate. This has led to a gulf between public policy and people’s realities with food as experienced in homes and on the streets. Through grounded case studies in seven Latin American countries, this book explores how development and social change in food and agriculture are fundamentally experiential, contingent and unpredictable. In viewing development in food as a socio-political-material experience, the authors find new objects, intersubjectivities and associations. These reveal a multiplicity of processes, effects and affects largely absent in current academic literature and public policy debates. In their attention to the contingency and creativity found in households, neighbourhoods and social networks, as well as at the borders of human–nonhuman experience, the book explores how people diversely meet their food needs and passions while confronting the region’s most pressing social, health and environmental concerns.

Book excerpt: In this book, the authors examine the impact of projected climate change on future food production and food security in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), to 2100. According to some accounts, climate change could be a devastating prospect for the indigenous peasantry of South America, and for LAC prospects as a food exporting region. However, temperate areas like the Southern Cone and parts of the Andean Highlands might actually benefit from some increase in temperature and the projected rise in precipitation. Demographic and economic drivers might themselves mitigate some of the potential effects of climate change, by reducing the size of the subsistence peasantry and generally improving access to food. And much improvement could be achieved through progress in agricultural technology, even if it progresses at rates lower than the historical record. Agricultural production and access to food may be further improved by measures creating better institutional and regulatory frameworks in the region and by more appropriate policies towards agriculture. However, the authors point out that governance in South America will have to mature before effective policy based responses to climate change can be expected.

An unprecedented three-year collaborative effort, the IAASTD involved more than 400 authors in 110 countries and cost more than $11 million. It reports on the advances and setbacks of the past fifty years and offers options for the next fifty years. The results of the project are contained in seven reports: a Global Report, five regional Sub-Global Assessments, and a Synthesis Report. The Global Report gives the key findings of the Assessment, and the five Sub-Global Assessments address regional challenges. The volumes present options for action. All of the reports have been extensively peer-reviewed by governments and experts and all have been approved by a panel of participating governments. The Sub-Global Assessments all utilize a similar and consistent framework: examining and reporting on the impacts of AKST on hunger, poverty, nutrition, human health, and environmental/social sustainability. It finds that consumption of meat quadrupled in Taiwan between the periods 1959-61 and 1989-91, while per capita rice consumption declined by one-half. In mainland China, consumption of nonstaple foods such as meat rose 10 percent. How much of these changes in diet resulted from income and price effects and how much from structural factors such as urbanization? This question has important implications for accurately forecasting the future demand for food in Asia.
