Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture, Its Fundamental Principles The purpose Of teaching agriculture is not to make a farmer Of each child, any more than the purpose Of teaching literature is to make an author of each one. The study is, however, especially useful to children who will some day be men and women with good farms to maintain or poor ones to improve. The knowledge Of the forces and laws which control plant and animal development raises the daily round Of farm tasks from drudgery to intelligent labor. As labor is better informed, it is better directed; it brings larger returns in dollars and in happiness. Book Fundamentals of Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fundamentals of Agriculture Classic Reprint written by James Edward Halligan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals of Agriculture Every subject 1n this book 1s written by an expert in his line. This idea was carried out in order to furnish the student with the best information that could be oh tained. The editor thought it would be better to have authorities treat of the various topics rather than write the book alone, as there are very few men who are competent enough to warrant their writing the best text book on agriculture. A 11st of bulletins and reference books 1s appended at the end of each chapter. The teacher should send for the bulletins (which can be had free of charge) some time before the particular subject 13 assigned, in order that fuller information may be offered to the students than 1s included 1n the text. The teacher should endeavor to present the subjects in season, and not necessarily in the order they are given, so that field trips may be taken to impress the topic or topics on the student's mind and to excite in terest. In propounding questions to the class original ity should predominate. At the end of most sections a few questions are asked to give the teacher an idea of what 1s required. Field experiments should be con ducted, and the text should be followed only to furnish the student with the principles or working knowledge. Book The Principles of Agriculture for Common Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of Agriculture for Common Schools Classic Reprint written by I. Oscar Winslow and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Agriculture for Common Schools A knowledge of the principles of agriculture, which simply means a knowledge of the natural laws and principles which underlie rural life and rural pursuits, is not only important for those who are actually engaged in the pursuits of agriculture, but may in general be regarded as an important element in the education of the young. For the large number of pupils who are unable to pursue an extended academic course of study, the natural sciences should not, as is too often the case, be wholly neglected. Although the time of the school course may not admit of a thorough mastery of any one of these sciences, a selection of the fundamental and elementary principles of each may be consistently and profitably presented. Education of this kind, impressing upon the young the mysteries and the beauties of nature, tends to increase the fondness for our native soil, and to develop a spirit of genuine patriotism. This book is designed primarily for use in the public schools, and contains no difficulties too great for ordinary pupils of twelve or fourteen years. Book Complete Farmer s Guide

Download or read book Complete Farmer s Guide written by Edwin Jackson Kyle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-18 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete Farmer's Guide: Fundamentals of Farming and Farm Life It was also the purpose of the authors to provide a book that did not stop with giving mere advice about farm prae tices to be memorized by the pupils, but taught first of all the fundamental principles of plant and animal growth and reproduction and of soil management. In this way the pupils are made able to understand the reasons for farm practices and to criticise any old or new practice independently. By emphasizing these far-reaching principles first, the thousand and one details of practice in the study of farm crops and animal husbandry which are later given become a matter for simple reasoning instead of a mere dead weight to be carried in memory. In order still further to develop the powers of observation, exercise the reason, and connect the lessons with the daily life and home needs of the pupils, lists of suggestive questions, exercises, and problems are provided for each subject. It is an astonishing fact that no text-book has given to the work of the farmer girls and farmers' wives more than a pass ing mention. Undoubtedly, the conditions in the country schools make this problem difficult, but it is believed that, with the aid of the experts in domestic economy and rural teaching who generously co - operated, a very valuable be ginning has been made in this text in enabling the school to give somewhat the same preparation for her life work on the farm to the farmer girl that is now given to the farmer boy. We have in general tried to broaden the conception of the course in elementary agriculture from that of a mere treatise on raising plants and animals for sale to that of a means of preparation for living intelligently and happily, as well as profitably, on the farm. It is a great pleasure to express here our appreciation of the assistance generously given by our colleagues in prepar ing this book.
