Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report reviews basic growth, as being one of four pillars for Nicaragua's poverty reduction strategy. The well-being of the rural poor will continue its dependence on, to a great extent, agriculture. The study analyzes main agricultural development aspects, and stipulates the broad basic growth may be enhanced by strengthening agricultural competitiveness, yet export growth is key to economic growth, and requires immediate actions within coherent strategies, illustrated through the case of coffee within the proposed strategy. The report also identifies market forces regarding productivity restrictions of the rural sector, and suggests medium- and long-term solutions. Finally, the report addresses risk management, including a description of some promising pilot projects.

Book The State and Domestic Agricultural Markets in Nicaragua

Download or read book The State and Domestic Agricultural Markets in Nicaragua written by Max Spoor and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines in depth the problematic effects of state intervention in agricultural markets of developing countries against the background of the current transition of interventionism to neo-liberalism. The fascinating case of Nicaragua is explored, focusing on the 1979-1990 interventionist period under Sandinista rule, followed by an analysis of the post-1990 laissez-faire UNO-period. The limits of state intervention are shown by analysing in detail the unintended effects of certain policies such as those on land reform, price, credit and technology. Finally, the book draws comparisons between the Nicaraguan case (in which two transitions took place in a relatively short time-span) and the recent dramatic transformations of Eastern Europe. It provides arguments for a different role for the state in this process, which is directed to market development, rather than the current withdrawal.

Download or read book Agricultural transformation trends in farm size crop diversification and mechanization in Nicaragua and Peru written by Srinivasan, S.V., Saborío, M., Morales Opazo, C. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2022-09-02 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural change is a process in which the amount of labour, capital and land dedicated to agriculture (and other sectors) changes over time. In this study, we focus on the cases of Peru and Nicaragua using their two most recently administered agricultural censuses. The agricultural censuses permit us to identify dimensions and information available to study the process of structural change in Latin America over the last 20 years. The study includes a comparative analysis and policy recommendations based on the two most recent agricultural censuses administered in Nicaragua (2001 and 2011) and Peru (1994 and 2012). Processing and analysing information from these censuses contribute to identifying dimensions and information available to study the process of structural change in Latin America over the last 20 years. Evidence-based policymaking is increasingly more at the core of the United Nations and member countries’ activity. In the case of FAO, this type of study is crucial to build the knowledge body on which projects and activities are carried forward. The Hand-in-Hand (HiH) initiative is a key example in this context, as it aims at quantitatively identifying high-impact and high-agricultural potential areas in which to invest within developing countries. As Nicaragua and Peru are HiH’s target countries, this study will show very useful to learn about their recent experiences in agricultural transformations.
