Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Agriculture for Common Schools A knowledge of the principles of agriculture, which simply means a knowledge of the natural laws and principles which underlie rural life and rural pursuits, is not only important for those who are actually engaged in the pursuits of agriculture, but may in general be regarded as an important element in the education of the young. For the large number of pupils who are unable to pursue an extended academic course of study, the natural sciences should not, as is too often the case, be wholly neglected. Although the time of the school course may not admit of a thorough mastery of any one of these sciences, a selection of the fundamental and elementary principles of each may be consistently and profitably presented. Education of this kind, impressing upon the young the mysteries and the beauties of nature, tends to increase the fondness for our native soil, and to develop a spirit of genuine patriotism. This book is designed primarily for use in the public schools, and contains no difficulties too great for ordinary pupils of twelve or fourteen years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture for Common Schools While it is not the province of the public schools, as at present organized, to teach the trades, it is their privilege and their duty to put the child in intelligent touch with the life about him and to use all of the means at hand in the process Of education. Much has been said about the tendency among boys to leave the farm for the town, and many attempts at explana tion and justification have been made. While it is perfectly proper for the boy to leave his father's farm and seek his fortune in a crowded city, sometimes he has gone with the mistaken notion that he could substitute wit for work in life's contest, 01: because Of a lack of appreciation of the dignity Of labor. Sometimes, also, he has gone because he has failed to see his Opportunities on the farm. The fact that he has not always bettered his condition has suggested a possibility of bringing about at least a more intelligent consideration of the question. Book Teaching of the Elements of Agriculture in the Common Schools Address Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching of the Elements of Agriculture in the Common Schools: Address One might reasonably assume that this is an extract from an address before one of our farmers' institutes, or has been taken from a lately issued report of some department of agriculture, and that they are the words and opinions of some leading agriculturist. Not so, however. These are the words of Egerton Ryerson, the founder of the public school system of Ontario, taken from the introduction to his text book on agriculture for use in Ontario public schools, and written in 1870. I can well believe that twenty-five years from the present some student of the educational and economic history of Ontario will be hard at work studying out and trying to explain why so little progress was made in general agricultural instruction in that Province during the years from 1870 to 1899. During that period four text books at least were available and various attempts weremade at encouraging the work; but in 1898, as far as Ontario was concerned, we were no further advanced than we were in 1870. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Agriculture Many texts have reversed this order, because certain farmers' organizations have so recommended. However, if education is our object, the child mind should receive first consideration in presenting any subject. The author was born and reared on an Ohio farm and taught in rural schools for several winters. He was later a supervisor of township schools. His knowledge of actual farm life and rural schools on the one hand, and of the child on the other, is offered in explanation of this attempt to place before the children of the common schools a simple and stimulating introduction to scientific farming. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secondary Education in Agriculture in the United States The county agricultural schools were first established in Wisconsin in 1902. These schools have been equipped at the expense of the counties where they are located, but the State aids each school to the extent of a year, to be applied to the running expenses. The course of study in each school extends over two years and is of quite a practical character, including agriculture, wood working, iron work ing, and domestic science, besides local United States history, civil government, and commercial arithmetic. County agricultural schools are also found in Maryland, Michigan, and Mississippi. The statistics for the normal schools have already been given, show ing that over 100 normal schools in the country are giving instruction in agriculture. This instruction is quite different in character in different schools. In some cases there is a regular course by a special instructor who is a graduate of an agricultural college. In other cases the teaching of agriculture has been taken up by the science teacher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Agriculture and Life

Download or read book Agriculture and Life written by Arthur D. Cromwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture and Life: A Text-Book for Normal Schools and Teachers Reading Circles This book was written for teachers. It was written by one who for years has taught Agriculture and Nature Study to pupils of all grades and ages. Most of the book consists of lectures delivered many times before Farmers' and Teachers' Institutes. The book is intended for Teachers' Reading Circles and Normal Training Classes. This book does not take the place of the text-book, such as Davis's Productive Farming. This book is written by one of a large number Of teachers who believe that we should teach from things largely and teach by having pupils do things worth while at home. This book should be of help on the teacher's desk as a guide for her daily work. Agriculture must at all times be closely correlated with the home activities Of the pupils. School Agriculture aims to teach things that are new, are a little more worth while doing than what is being done; that being true, a book cannot present matter for all time and cover our big, varied country. The best things to do will be changing, and hence a book is hardly Off the press before it is out Of date. A book on teaching Agriculture will be valuable for its suggestions and for the enthusiasm it puts into the teachers to take hold of the work.
