Download or read book The Principles of Agriculture for Common Schools Classic Reprint written by I. Oscar Winslow and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Agriculture for Common Schools A knowledge of the principles of agriculture, which simply means a knowledge of the natural laws and principles which underlie rural life and rural pursuits, is not only important for those who are actually engaged in the pursuits of agriculture, but may in general be regarded as an important element in the education of the young. For the large number of pupils who are unable to pursue an extended academic course of study, the natural sciences should not, as is too often the case, be wholly neglected. Although the time of the school course may not admit of a thorough mastery of any one of these sciences, a selection of the fundamental and elementary principles of each may be consistently and profitably presented. Education of this kind, impressing upon the young the mysteries and the beauties of nature, tends to increase the fondness for our native soil, and to develop a spirit of genuine patriotism. This book is designed primarily for use in the public schools, and contains no difficulties too great for ordinary pupils of twelve or fourteen years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture for Common Schools While it is not the province of the public schools, as at present organized, to teach the trades, it is their privilege and their duty to put the child in intelligent touch with the life about him and to use all of the means at hand in the process Of education. Much has been said about the tendency among boys to leave the farm for the town, and many attempts at explana tion and justification have been made. While it is perfectly proper for the boy to leave his father's farm and seek his fortune in a crowded city, sometimes he has gone with the mistaken notion that he could substitute wit for work in life's contest, 01: because Of a lack of appreciation of the dignity Of labor. Sometimes, also, he has gone because he has failed to see his Opportunities on the farm. The fact that he has not always bettered his condition has suggested a possibility of bringing about at least a more intelligent consideration of the question. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Agriculture in the High School There must be a philosophy of secondary agricultural education. Conscious aims must be set up and their desirability established, and means and methods worked out that shall be effective in securing the realization of these aims. Clearer ideas are needed of the peda gogical principles involved, and the aims in view need to be more clearly defined. In this day of special methods for the teaching of the various school subjects, there should also be one for the teaching of agriculture. So far as our knowledge goes, there is not a book that treats of the methods of teaching this subject in the high school. A consider able amount has been written on the methods of teaching nature study in the elementary school, and the agricultural colleges have their own peculiar methods adaptable to the needs of the college student, but the field embracing school methods in secondary agri culture is still a virgin one.
