This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture Fact Book, 1994 Today, the United States is primarily urban. People who live in large cities and their suburbs and in towns of at least residents account for three-fourths of the total population. R'ural people in the open country or in places with fewer than residents numbered about million in 1990. Although rural population increased in both the 1970's and 1980's, its proportion of the total population fell slightly because the urban population grew even more rapidly. Farm residents numbered about million in 1992, and are a small minority even in the rural population. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Culture of Farm Crops

Download or read book The Culture of Farm Crops written by Henry Stewart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Culture of Farm Crops: A Manual of the Science of Agriculture, and a Hand-Book of Practice for American Farmers Not a farmer of that day, nor a chemist, knew that bones furnished phosphoric acid to plants; or that guano provided in its ammonia the materials from which their gluten and other nitrogenous substances were derived. Indeed the renowned father of agricultural science: Liebig - when he propounded his mineral theory, which was that the ashes of plants contained everything which they drew from the soil, and that if the mineral substances contained in the ashes, were supplied in sufficient quantity to the crops, there would be scarcely a limit to the product, excepting the space in which they were contained - knew nothing about the invaluable nitrogen which we now know to be wholly indispensable to plant growth. But light has grad ually dawned upon us, and by slow and sometimes faltering progress, there has been built up a system of agricultural science which explains the laws of plant growth and affords the most important information to the cultivator of the soil. Science is based upon fact. Philosophy is based upon speculation. Science is the outgrowth of philosophy, be cause before we can reach a true knowledge of any fact we must approach the study of it by a well devised theory, changed as may be necessary, and tested patiently and slowly until the knowledge sought is found. This know ledge, when verified by practice, sufficiently proved and classified, becomes science. Science then is nothing for the farmer to fear, or cast doubt and suspicion upon. Theory as has been said, has no part or lot in it; it is a summary of known facts, and is therefore of the most valuable use to the farmer as it gives him a sound basis upon which to build up such conclusions in regard to his practice as will enable him to meet the various difficulties which are al ways arising in his work. Book Elements of Agriculture Southern and Western Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Agriculture Southern and Western Classic Reprint written by W. C. Welborn and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Agriculture, Southern and Western The author feels no hesitation in taking the ground that agriculture has an educational, or mind-training value, fully equal to geography or history. The facts presented in agriculture are quite like those of physical geography in particular; the description of the development of crops, live stock, and agricultural industries generally is the very best of history. In addition, the study of agriculture has a manifest advantage in training the habits of observation, as it treats of things that are about us - that may be seen, heard, and felt - and therefore truly educates through the environment of the pupil. If a geography class could be taken to Mount Vesuvius and could see the great volumes of ashes, cinders, and lava that are belched forth, covering hundreds of square miles with rich soil, what a lesson it would be in world-building and what an inspiration to the whole school and the whole community! In agriculture we teach facts that may be verified on the farm, in the garden, by the roadside, and in the forest, and facts, too, of greater importance by far to that community than the operations of the far-away volcano. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Florida Agricultural Statistics: Vegetable Summary 1994-1995 The acreage, production, and value statistics in this bulletin are official State and usda estimates prepared by the Florida Agricultural Statistics Service. Extended commodity coverage and county and area detail were made possible through the participation of the Department of Food and Resource Economics, University of Florida, in the estimating program. The Bureau of State Farmers' Markets, Florida Department of Agriculture, and the County Extension Agents of the Cooperative Extension Service were also very helpful in supplying area and county information. Shipment statistics were provided by the Market News Section of the Florida Department of Agriculture and the usda Agricultural Marketing Service. Growers, shippers, and processors volunteered most of the basic data used in developing these statistics. The public spirited cooperation of these individuals and groups is appreciated. Grower organizations have provided valuable assistance and data throughout the season. These groups include Florida Tomato Committee, Florida Sweet Corn Exchange, and the Zellwood Sweet Corn Exchange. Sales agencies and transportation firms provided additional data. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of Agriculture IN the preparation of this elementary work upon the Principles of Agriculture, the author has been desirous of avoiding, as far as possible, the use of technical terms, in cases where other terms in general use would convey the same idea. When it has been necessary to employ such terms, they have been explained in the simplest possible manner, so as to render the book intelligible to all classes of readers. Although the work is strictly elementary, the author has considered it desirable to draw attention to certain points in practice and in theory, which seem to be insufficiently recognized by many of our practical and scientific agriculturists. The study is, however, especially useful to children who will some day be men and women with good farms to maintain or poor ones to improve. The knowledge Of the forces and laws which control plant and animal development raises the daily round Of farm tasks from drudgery to intelligent labor. As labor is better informed, it is better directed; it brings larger returns in dollars and in happiness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Agriculture: A Popular Outline of the Changes, Which Are Revolutionizing, the Methods of Farming and the Habits of Farm Life Individualism - the right and power of the individual to regulate his own life, think his own thoughts, express his own convictions, carry out his own theories, and strive Without let or hindrance for the attainment of his own ideals, in so far as' all this may be done Without trespassing upon the rights of others - this undoubtedly constitutes the basis of many a man's aspiration who sees only a diminishing prospect of attaining his heart's desire in his present environment. He feels that the incorporation Of industries into one gigantic whole, or, at best, into a limited number of colossal units, renders him insignificant beyond What is right, deprives him of the dignity of manhood, and stifles his life. He feels that the embezzler, the speculator, and the thief in exalted places are given Opportunities for public exploitation and self-enrich ment, and that the common, ubiquitous and ever-hateful grafter is'an inevitable product of the system. Download or read book North Carolina Agricultural Statistics 1993 Classic Reprint written by Bob Murphy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Carolina Agricultural Statistics, 1993 North Carolina agriculture (food, fiber, and forestry) is a dynamic industry that accounts for over 28 percent of the state's economy. Despite the challenges of the drought of 1993, the mounting pressures on tobacco growers, and ever increasing environmental concerns, agriculture continues to flourish. Expansion and diversification has helped the industry remain a major influence in the North Carolina economy. The importance of reliable and consistent agricultural data cannot be overstated. The data in this and all previous bulletins enables the user to quickly spot the major trends in production, the increased diversification, and glimpse the financial picture of agriculture in North Carolina and the United States. Progressive diversification increases the demand for new agricultural data series. To meet this demand the state legislature provided funding in 1994 to start data series for some specialty commodities that are important to the state's agriculture.
