Book excerpt: The second volume of the Handbook describes different extractive economies in the world regions that have been outlined in the first volume. A wide range of economic actors – from kings and armies to cities and producers – are discussed within different imperial settings as well as the tools, which enabled and constrained economic outcomes. A central focus are nodes of consumption that are visible in the archaeological and textual records of royal capitals, cities, religious centers, and armies that were stationed, in some cases permanently, in imperial frontier zones. Complementary to the multipolar concentrations of consumption are the fiscal-tributary structures of the empires vis-à-vis other institutions that had the capacity to extract, mobilize, and concentrate resources and wealth. Larger volumes of state-issued coinage in various metals show the new role of coinage in taxation, local economic activities, and social practices, even where textual evidence is absent. Given the overwhelming importance of agriculture, the volume also analyses forms of agrarian development, especially around cities and in imperial frontier zones. Special consideration is given to road- and water-management systems for which there is now sufficient archaeological and documentary evidence to enable cross-disciplinary comparative research.

Book excerpt: Landlord villages dominated Iranian land tenure for hundreds of years, whereby one powerful landlord owned the village structures, surrounding farmland, and to all intents and purposes, the village occupants themselves, a system that in some cases remained in place up to the 1979 Islamic Revolution. In Oman, mud-brick oases were home to most of the rural population right up until Sultan Qaboos came to power in 1970, and required inhabitants of mud-brick houses to relocate into new concrete block buildings. Historical Archaeology and Heritage in the Middle East explores these everyday, rural communities in Iran and Oman in the 19th and 20th centuries, through a combination of building analysis, excavation, artefact analysis and ethnographic interviews. Drawing on the results of original field projects, the book considers new ways of exploring traditional lifeways, giving voice to hitherto largely ignored sections of the population, and offers new and different ways of thinking about how these people lived and what shaped their lives and the impact of major political and social changes on them. Place, memory and belonging are considered through the lens of material culture within these villages. The significant role of Iran in the early stages of this transition was recognised more than half a century ago but has not been to the fore of academic consciousness in recent decades. In the meantime, investigations into Neolithic transformation have proceeded apace in all other regions of the Fertile Crescent and beyond. Here, 18 studies attempt to redress that balance in re-assessing the role of Iran in the early neolithisation of human societies. These studies, many of them by Iranian scholars, consider patterns of change and/or continuity across a variety of topographical landscapes; investigate Neolithic settlement patterns, the use of caves, animal exploitation and environmental indicators and present new insights into some well-known and some newly investigated sites. The results re-affirm the formative role of this region in the transition to sedentary farming.

This is the third in a series of volumes that present the final reports of the exploration and excavations carried out by the Bannu Archaeological Project. This volume presents the first synthesis of the archaeology of the historic periods in the Bannu region, spanning the period when the first large scale empires expanded to the borders of South Asia up until the arrival of Islam in the subcontinent at the end of the first and beginning of the second millennium BC. The Bannu region provides specific insight into early imperialism in South Asia, as throughout this protracted period, it was able to maintain a distinctive regional identity in the face of recurring phases of imperial expansion and integration.

Book excerpt: "The last decades have brought to light many archaeological discoveries relevant to the study of prehistoric pastoralism in the Near East. The renewed interest in pastoralists, who often solely occupied the semi-arid region, arose amongst archaeologists when the origins of agriculture, especially the cultivation of cereals and legumes and the domestication of goats and sheep, attracted attention. Excavations of Late Paleolithic and Early Neolithic sites in the Levant and the hilly flanks of the Taurus and Zagros, have demonstrated that the information drawn from sites in the 'sown land' is insufficient to clarify the Near Eastern origins of animal husbandry and incipient pastoralism. The lack of evidence from the Syro-Arabian desert and Sinai has distorted our understanding of socioeconomic regional developments. A partial correction is now provided by the efforts of those archaeologists who have published the results of surveys and excavations over the last fifteen years. The available data sets indicate that the potential for studying the origin of pastoralism definitely lies in this vast region. The accumulation of archaeological, zoological, and botanical evidence since the late 1950s has enabled new hypotheses concerning the emergence of early food-producing economies and the incipient phases of animal domestication and husbandry. ... In this prehistoric context, the origin of pastoralism in general and of pastoral nomadism in particular, together with their relationship to other types of food-producing economies, has already been examined. Therefore, it seemed to us that the time had come to concentrate on three levels: (a) to summarize in broad outline the present knowledge of prehistoric forms of pastoralism in the Levant, (b) to attempt the more challenging task of integrating different archaeological, anthropological, and historical approaches, and to offer a comprehensive or alternative explanatory model of the origins of pastoralism, and (c) to try to understand the intricate relationships between pastoral and agrarian-urban societies, based mainly on the archaeological records of the region. We did not of course expect that all the various anthropological, archaeological and archaeozoological problems surrounding this issue could be resolved. However, we hoped that by bringing together the data and ideas of contemporary scholars we might be able to formulate better questions."--
