Book Why Large Farms Dominate and Rural Areas Struggle in Slovakia

Download or read book Why Large Farms Dominate and Rural Areas Struggle in Slovakia written by Marian Toth and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After 1989, Slovak agricultural sector was transformed from centrally planned economy to the market economy. Before 1989 farms in Slovakia were large cooperatives and state farms with large acreage, without existence of private companies. Agriculture in Slovakia has also currently different structure compared to agriculture in old EU member states. The majority of UAA (75%) is cultivated by large farms - agricultural holdings - with 1200 ha per farm on average. Therefore, although subsidies in form of direct payments per hectare are lower than in old EU member states, the payment per farm is one of the biggest in EU. In the paper, we analyse the effect of large farms on rural employment, wages, agricultural production and profitability of large farms. The analysis is based on individual farm data in the period 1994 to 2014 in Slovakia. The results show from that steep decrease in employment, low wages and low level of agricultural production of large farms is one of the reasons for disparities in development of rural areas and urban areas in Slovakia.

Book Transformation of Agricultural Sector in the Central and Eastern Europe after 1989

Download or read book Transformation of Agricultural Sector in the Central and Eastern Europe after 1989 written by Jerzy Bański and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the transformation of the agricultural sector in East-Central European countries after the collapse of the socialist system at the beginning of the 20th century. Through considering their spatial diversity, it identifies diagnoses and evaluates the social and economic processes that have taken place in eleven countries which are currently the members of the European Community. The book analyses all important elements of spatial structure of agriculture such as land use, agrarian structure, agricultural population, technical facilities, structure and volume of production, yields, and types of farms. It also provides a wealth of maps and charts that facilitate the interpretation of the identified phenomena. As such the book is a great resource for academics, students, practitioners and policy-makers in geography and food economics.

Book Changes of Agricultural Landscape in the Administrative Regions of Slovakia in 1990 2000

Download or read book Changes of Agricultural Landscape in the Administrative Regions of Slovakia in 1990 2000 written by Ján Feranec and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper shows the results of analysis and assessment of the changes in the agricultural landscape in Slovakia in the years 1990-2000, obtained through identification of the transfers from the CORINE land cover class 211 (arable land) in favor of classes 231 (pastures) and 242 (complex cultivation patterns). The area of class 242 increased by 13,111.7 ha, mainly in the hinterland of rural settlements of northern and central Slovakia and in the viticultural regions of south-western Slovakia. The cause of this change lies in restitution of farmland and its lease to new private farmers. The area of class 231 increased at the cost of the class 211 by 4,530.9 ha. This change was observed in almost all districts of mountain and sub-mountain regions of Slovakia and primarily it is due to the transformation in the agrarian policy of the State after 1989.

Book Agricultural Transformation Food and Environment

Download or read book Agricultural Transformation Food and Environment written by Henry Buller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. An interdisciplinary team of leading European scholars bring together case studies from Western and Eastern Europe to illustrate and critically analyze the shifting relationships of agricultural, environmental and food policy in Europe. In the most comprehensive book of its kind it examines the critical changes, both in agricultural, environmental and food politics and the way these domains have been investigated by European social scientists. The book evaluates specific changes, focussing in particular on agricultural restructuring (in the face of globalization, Europeanization and the collapse of the Soviet model of agricultural organization), agriculture-environmental relations and consumer preferences. Beginning by examining the degree to which Europe offers a unique and identifiable rural experience, the book includes a critical re-examination of the process of agricultural transformation. In the light of contemporary events and the over-seductive and essentially mythical notion of post-productivism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1960s, Southeast Asia's agricultural sector has experienced phenomenal growth, with increases in production linked to an energy-intensive capitalization of agriculture and the rapid development of agrifood systems and agribusiness. Agricultural intensification and territorial expansion have been key to this process, with expansion of areas under cultivation playing an unusually important role in the transformation of the countryside and livelihoods of its inhabitants. Borneo, with vast tracts of land not yet under crops, has been the epicenter of this expansion process, with rubber and oil palm acting as the spearhead. Indonesia's Kalimantan provinces and the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak have all undergone major changes but the time frames have varied, as have the crops involved. Agricultural expansion in Borneo is both an economic and a political process, and it has brought about profound socio-economic transformations, including deforestation, and development of communication networks. There has also been rapid population growth, much faster than in either Indonesia or Malaysia as a whole, with attendant pressures on employment, housing and social services. Until the end of the 20th century, agricultural expansion in Indonesia and Malaysia was largely state driven, with the goal of poverty reduction. Subsequently, as in Borneo, boom crop expansion has been taken over by private corporations that are driven by profit maximization rather than poverty reduction.
