Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Situation, Vol. 52: June 1968 Although a emp report - the piece of paper - is basically a summary of farm ing conditions in bushels, acres, or dollars, crop reporting is actually the way farmers keep themselves informed about agriculture. The Statistical Reporting Service is the middleman in the reporting proc ess: Taking up the information, sorting and checking it, making an informed estimate, and quickly making it public So the crop reporter who mails in one card about his own farm conditions soon gets back a report covering all 3 million u.s. Farms. Such national information is valna ble because it is useful to farmers. A reporter recently identified one of the most basic uses of the information: I like to keep up with the trend of the times, to see what crops are sup-posed to be the best ones to plant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Situation, Vol. 52: December 1968 Farmland has a central place in to day's changes in land use. In many places, farmland competes with, and yields to, urban uses. At the same time, farmers compete among themselves for the best acres of cropland. Agriculture frequently overlaps with forestry uses. On the one hand, farms enclose a part of the Nation's forest and woodland. On the other, millions of acres of public and private forest lands are also used for grazing. Every 5 years, usda assesses the changes in agricultural and other land uses. Between 1959 and 1964, the last survey year, important changes in land use occurred. Here is a summary of trends in major uses: Grazing use continues to recede. The vast area used for grazing has been contracting for years.' Between 1959 and 1964, total grazing land declined by 2 percent. Along with this decline, the overall productivity of grazing land has increased. Three kinds of land are used for grazing: permanent pasture and range, cropland, and forest land. New lands opening in the West and cropland in the Midwest are being con verted to permanent pasture. The total land in permanent pasture and rangeland rose from 633 to 640 million acres in 1959 - 64. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Situation, Vol. 52: March 1968 There is news in every phase of the cotton economy, from the harvest of last fall to a well-pruned carryover in store for August. The big news, of course, was the crop. With smaller plantings in 1966, and con tinned crop damage, an estimated million running bales were harvested. It was less than anyone expected - the smallest cotton output since 1895. News has also been made on the cotton markets, where, in past years, prices seemed unwilling to budge more than a cent or two. As crop prospects dimmed last fall, buyers were faced with the first really substantial reduction in cotton supplies in a half-dozen years. Prices trended upward, and gaps developed be tween the prices paid for short, medium, and long-staples. The biggest story may be in the small est carryover in years. For the first August since 1953, remaining stocks will total less than 7 million bales, in contrast to nearly 17 million 2 years ago. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Situation, Vol. 41: November 1957 Extra-large crop yields per acre have been telling a production success story for many farmers during the past 5 years. They also spell lower per unit production costs, even if bulging bins everywhere don't always mean bigger profits. Extra-high yields are a per sonal achievement, nature's own merit awards in the contest of skill, work, and chance we call farming. The combined effect of these indi vidual successes is a striking advance in national per-acre yields. Yields this year are climaxing a 6-year unbroken series of gains in overall yield which started in 1952. October 1 data place the 1957 yield-per-acre level more than a fourth higher than in 1947 - 49. These are years used by the Department of Agriculture as a base for comparing yield per acre, crop output, and other items.
