Book Agricultural Research and Technology Transfer

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 846 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural research was probably the first and is the most widespread form of organised research in the world, and one in which both the most developed and underdeveloped countries are engaged. Whilst most forms of research activity, such as in the field of medicine, have world wide application, agricultural research, by its very nature, has to be regional; practically no research finding can be adopted without studying the results of its application under the infinite number of ecological situations with which the farmers of the world are faced. The improvement of agricultural production is the essential first step whereby developing countries can hope to raise their standard of living. Research is therefore an activity in which no underdeveloped country can afford not to engage; nor can countries in which agriculture has reached a high level of development and sophistication afford to neglect agricultural research. It is not because of inertia or vested interests that highly industrialised countries maintain, mostly at public expense, a costly and complex infrastructure for agricultural research. Even when problems of overproduction weigh heavily on the economy, agricultural research is considered the essential key to further progress: the objectives and goals are simply changed and adapted to the needs of the economy.

Book excerpt: Two experiences from Colombia indicate that placing agricultural research and technology tranfer in the same institution is neither a necessary, nor sufficient, condition for effective coordination between the two activities or for improved institutional performance. Additional factors to consider include: the specificity of the problems addressed: the institution's capacity to manage the coordination: status differences and competition over resources: institutional size: and the level of politicization of the technology transfer activities.

Book Agricultural System Models in Field Research and Technology Transfer

Download or read book Agricultural System Models in Field Research and Technology Transfer written by Lajpat R. Ahuja and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-04-29 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most books covering the use of computer models in agricultural management systems target only one or two types of models. There are few texts available that cover the subject of systems modeling comprehensively and that deal with various approaches, applications, evaluations, and uses for technology transfer. Agricultural System Models in Field Research and Technology Transfer fills this need. It presents the latest advances in the use of various computer models in agricultural management systems. This authoritative reference provides guidance on the use of models in field research, decision support, precision farming, and technology transfer to farmers and ranchers. Derived from an international symposium co-sponsored by the American Society of Agronomy, the Soil Science Society of America, and the USDA's Agricultural Research Service, it analyzes current system model applications for the modeling of natural resources, crop production, grazing lands, and animal production systems. Leading international agricultural system scientists present their experiences and provide guidance on how models can be used to enhance the quality of field research, transfer of research information and technology to farmers and ranchers, and decision support for agricultural management. They provide an expert review of the existing problems and possible solutions to improve future applications. In addition, Agricultural System Models in Field Research and Technology Transfer explores the possible use of an international modular computer framework to improve current modeling procedures in an effort to develop problem-specific models in the future.
