Book Agricultural Pricing Policy in Eastern Africa

Download or read book Agricultural Pricing Policy in Eastern Africa written by Christopher D. Gerrard and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This case study explores the complexity of developing policy options for agricultural pricing. It also compares the relative success that four countries in eastern Africa have had in ironing out incompatible elements in policy proposals. The study guides the reader through a policymaking simulation. Agricultural pricing policy may arise from a number of objectives, such as efficient economic development, an equitable distribution of income, or nutritional well-being. Such objectives can be pursued by various means, some of which may conflict with other objectives or other parts of the same plan. This volume demonstrates how small- group decisionmaking can help in analyzing proposals before implementation in order to avoid working at cross-purposes. These materials provide the historical and theoretical context for examination of policies in Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, and Zambia. Major decisions made by the countries between 1965 and 1985 are examined and compared. These countries lend themselves particularly well to this type of analysis because of the similarity of their economic and institutional structures and their different experiences with agricultural development.

Book Selected Issues in Agricultural Policy Analysis with Special Reference to East Africa

Download or read book Selected Issues in Agricultural Policy Analysis with Special Reference to East Africa written by Tony Akaki and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-03-29 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights some of the main areas of debate around the subject of agricultural policy in Eastern Africa. Its major aim is to introduce the reader to different issues of economic and social change arising from agricultural development and to provide an understanding of some of the major difficulties faced by African countries in pursuing an agricultural policy. Agricultural policy is analyzed by creating a contextual framework in light of the major policy documents of the World Bank to formulate an understanding of the developmental issues pertaining to agriculture. This is not meant to be a comprehensive study of agricultural policy but a mode of analysis in which broad sector agricultural policies can be viewed as a potentially active agent of social change and development.

Book African Farmers Value Chains and Agricultural Development

Download or read book African Farmers Value Chains and Agricultural Development written by Alan de Brauw and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thorough introduction to and examination of agricultural value chains in Sub-Saharan Africa. First, the authors introduce the economic theory of agri-food value chains and value chain governance, focusing on domestic and regional trade in (and consumption of) food crops in a low-income country context. In addition to mainstream and heterodox thinking about value chain development, the book pays attention to political economy considerations. The book also reviews the empirical evidence on value chain development and performance in Africa. It adopts multiple lenses to examine agricultural value chains, zooming out from the micro level (e.g., relational contracting in a context of market imperfections) to the meso level (e.g., distributional implications of various value chain interventions, inclusion of specific social groups) and the macro level (underlying income, population and urbanization trends, volumes and prices, etc.).Furthermore, this book places value chain development in the context of a process the authors refer to as structural transformation 2.0, which refers to a process where production factors (labor, land and capital) move from low-productivity agriculture to high-productivity agriculture. Finally, throughout the book the authors interpret the evidence in light of three important debates: (i) how competitive are rural factor and product markets, and what does this imply for distribution and innovation? (ii) what role do foreign investment and factor proportions play in the development of agri-food value chains in Africa? (iii) what complementary government policies can help facilitate a process of agricultural value chain transformation, towards high-productive activities and enhancing the capacity of value chains to generate employment opportunities and food security for a growing population.
