Book OECD Economic Surveys New Zealand 2024

Download or read book OECD Economic Surveys New Zealand 2024 written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-06 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a strong recovery from the pandemic, the New Zealand economy has slowed, with higher interest rates weighing on housing construction, and inflation undermining purchasing power and consumption. Monetary policy has tightened significantly since late 2021 and proved efficient at reining in inflation. Better control of government spending is needed to keep fiscal consolidation on track in the short run and restore fiscal space for ageing-related expenditures and the green transition in the long run. New Zealand also faces an investment gap in addressing the needs of a rapidly growing population. Improving competition policies and streamlining the regulatory environment would help revive productivity growth and lift living standards in the long run. As highlighted by the recent OECD PISA study, achievement in school education has declined markedly. Inequality remains high and attendance has dropped. There is an urgent need to improve the curriculum, reform teacher education and strengthen support to teachers and schools to deliver better education outcomes. Adapting to climate change will require maintaining high insurance coverage for climate-related losses as well as changes to land-use planning and a comprehensive long-run energy strategy. The green transition needs a more rigorous cost-benefit assessment of emission reduction options. Special features: Competition, School Education, Climate Change

Book World Bank East Asia and Pacific Economic Update October 2022

Download or read book World Bank East Asia and Pacific Economic Update October 2022 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2022-09-30 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Asia and the Pacific does not so far conform to the current narrative of stagflation. The region, with some exceptions, is growing faster and has lower inflation than other regions. And prospects for several countries have improved, as they bounced back from the distress of the Delta wave in a still buoyant global economy. But this rosy picture must not obscure four impediments to inclusive and sustainable growth: disease, deceleration, debt, and distortions. In particular, current policies to contain inflation and debt are distorting the markets for food, fuel and finance in ways that could compromise development goals. In each case, more efficient measures could address current difficulties without undermining longer term objectives.

Book Natural resource driven fragility

Download or read book Natural resource driven fragility written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2024-01-19 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly interconnected world, we are confronted with formidable global challenges stemming from resource depletion, unsustainable production and consumption patterns, and the alarming consequences of climate change. The scientific consensus is clear: the current models of production and consumption are pushing our planet towards unsustainable limits. While there is growing awareness of the political processes that transform environmental concerns into social issues and policy development, the absence of reliable indicators on access to natural resources hampers the integration of water, energy, and food security into the sustainable development agenda. This report endeavours to define and map natural resources-driven fragility, aiming to lay the foundation for the development of a visualization tool – a global map highlighting vulnerable areas acutely exposed to natural resources-driven fragility.By providing empirical evidence, this tool will serve as a compass, guiding decisions regarding geographical and thematic areas of intervention, thereby alleviating the burden of natural resources-driven fragility faced by the most vulnerable nations.

Book OECD Economic Surveys United States 2024

Download or read book OECD Economic Surveys United States 2024 written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States economy has continued to expand at a solid pace and price pressures have eased somewhat. However, a sustained fiscal deficit has contributed to raising public debt as a share of GDP to its highest level since World War II, with a further substantial increase in prospect over coming decades as the population ages. To put the public finances on a more sustainable path, a multi-year fiscal adjustment should be enacted that achieves savings on pensions and healthcare and raises taxation, including on capital incomes. A more medium-term oriented and less complicated federal budgeting process would support this. At the same time, economic growth would benefit from productivity enhancing reforms that promote competition, including through maintaining international trade openness and reinforcing relevant skills in the workforce. Efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have accelerated, but further policy measures will be needed to achieve emission reduction targets. Policy options include a package of broad-based carbon pricing, taxes and sectoral policies. As the climate transition further progresses, additional measures will be needed to support displaced workers from fossil fuel industries and for climate adaptation. SPECIAL FEATURE: MANAGING FISCAL PRESSURES IN THE UNITED STATES
