Book Agricultural Laboratory Exercises and Home Projects Adapted to Secondary Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Agricultural Laboratory Exercises and Home Projects Adapted to Secondary Schools Classic Reprint written by Henry Jackson Waters and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Laboratory Exercises and Home Projects Adapted to Secondary Schools Use of exercises and projects. The number of exercises to be completed in a year will depend upon the needs of the local community and the 'time given to the course. The vocational school giving one half of each day to the course in agriculture should be able to complete all the laboratory exercises and in addition provide the required six months' supervised project work. In schools giving less time the teacher should select those exercises of greatest importance to the local community. Method. It is a great waste of time and effort to require each student to do all of the work of each exercise. In many cases the work of manipulation of apparatus and material can best be done by the teacher or by a group of students. In the table of contents this is indicated by a letter in parenthesis: (t) meaning that the work of manipulation may be done by the teacher, (g) by a group of students, (i) by the individual student. Cooperation with the best farmers. The closest. Cooperation between the teacher of agriculture and the best farmers of the neighborhood is necessary to insure the teaching of sound agriculture and also as a means of facilitating the adoption of the teachings of the classroom and laboratory into the farm practices of the community. Sound teaching and close cooperation will be much helped if the teacher will choose an advisory committee consisting of the most progressive farmers of the neighbor hood and will use this committee in working out a plan of correlating the school work with the local farm work. These and other leading farmers should be invited to talk to the class on the methods of farming which they have found most feasible and practicable. Every member of the class in agriculture should be set to work on some problem on the home farm. Use should be made of the best dairy and beef cattle, the best horses, hogs, sheep, and poultry, in the community in the stock-judging work. Book Laboratory Exercises in Principles of Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Exercises in Principles of Agriculture Classic Reprint written by Erwin Hopt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Exercises in Principles of Agriculture The work as presented in this manual had its beginning in at least two independent sources: (1) The method of preparing detailed exercises for teaching elementary general agriculture in secondary schools had its origin largely in the teaching and direction of H. B. Brownell, Professor of School Sciences, University of Nebraska. (2) The idea of prepar ing laboratory exercises in field crops and making available to schools the necessary supplies for teaching the same, Originated ten or twelve years ago with Professor's E. G. Mont'gomery and T. L. Lyon, both' formerly of Nebraska, but now at Cornell University. The manual of these two teachers, Examining and Grading Grains, has done much to encourage and syste matize laboratory study in field crops throughout the United States. It was largely the de mand for field crop material created by this manual which revived into life the abandonedidea of supplying field crop laboratory material which had formerly been carried on by the Department of Agronomy of the University of Nebraska. Without the use of ideas from these two sources, the work as presented in this manual could scarcely have been possible. Most of the laboratory exercises presented in this manual have passed through several mimeographed editions, and have been used in one or more of the following Nebraska schools: Teachers' College High School, Lincoln; School of Agriculture, Lincoln; School of Agriculture, Curtis. Laboratory instruction as here outlined is designed to accompany classroom instruction. A division of time that will probably fit most schools is as follows. Book Exercises in Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Exercises in Agriculture Classic Reprint written by S. H. Dadisman and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Agriculture The exercises contained in this book have been tried in high schools by the author. They are recommended for the laboratory work in a one-year course in agriculture. There should be two laboratory periods each week for this work if possible. The value of having each pupil do the individual exercises cannot be over-emphasized. Seeing and noting the results, is believing, in laboratory work. These exercises should accompany the regular class work. The exercises selected are simple and practical, and require but little equipment. Many such exercises have been tried out by the author, in his practice teaching work in agriculture. All those that have been found too difficult for the practice teacher to perform have been eliminated, so that the ones here given can be taught by the average high school teacher. The teacher can select from this list the ones that are best suited to the local conditions. Every exercise in this book can be performed in the average high school with a limited amount of equipment. The equipment should be sufficient, however, for the size of the class. No pupil can perform exercises without the needed equipment any more than a mechanic can do his work without tools. The suggestions for this work came from various sources, such as the Ames School Circular No. 2, from which the suggestions on corn were taken; and the Farm Crops and Poultry Departments Score Card, Iowa State College. The larger part of the material was gathered by the students in the practice teaching class in agriculture. The author wishes to express his thanks to these students for their help. Book Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities

Download or read book Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-10-27 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although few Americans work as farmers these days, agriculture on the whole remains economically importantâ€"playing a key role in such contemporary issues as consumer health and nutrition, worker safety and animal welfare, and environmental protection. This publication provides a comprehensive picture of the primary education system for the nation's agriculture industry: the land grant colleges of agriculture. Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities informs the public debate about the challenges that will shape the future of these colleges and serves as a foundation for a second volume, which will present recommendations for policy and institutional changes in the land grant system. This book reviews the legislative history of the land grant system from its establishment in 1862 to the 1994 act conferring land grant status on Native American colleges. It describes trends that have shaped agriculture and agricultural education over the decadesâ€"the shift of labor from farm to factory, reasons for and effects of increased productivity and specialization, the rise of the corporate farm, and more. The committee reviews the system's three-part missionâ€"education, research, and extension serviceâ€"and through this perspective documents the changing nature of funding and examines the unique structure of the U.S. agricultural research and education system. Demographic data on faculties, students, extension staff, commodity and funding clusters, and geographic specializations profile the system and identify similarities and differences among the colleges of agriculture, trends in funding, and a host of other issues. The tables in the appendix provide further itemization about general population distribution, student and educator demographics, types of degree programs, and funding allocations. Concise commentary and informative graphics augment the detailed statistical presentations. This book will be important to policymakers, administrators, educators, researchers, and students of agriculture.

Book Democracy and Education

Download or read book Democracy and Education written by John Dewey and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 1916 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
