Book Revitalizing Indian Agriculture and Boosting Farmer Incomes

Download or read book Revitalizing Indian Agriculture and Boosting Farmer Incomes written by Ashok Gulati and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-05 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book provides an evidence-based roadmap for revitalising Indian agriculture while ensuring that the growth process is efficient, inclusive, and sustainable, and results in sustained growth of farmers’ incomes. The book, instead of looking for global best practices and evaluating them to assess the possibility of replicating these domestically, looks inward at the best practices and experiences within Indian states, to answer questions such as -- how the agricultural growth process can be speeded up and made more inclusive, and financially viable; are there any best practices that can be studied and replicated to bring about faster growth in agriculture; does the prior hypothesis that rapid agricultural growth can alleviate poverty faster, reduce malnutrition, and augment farmers’ incomes stand? To answer these questions, the book follows four broad threads -- i) Linkage between agricultural performance, poverty and malnutrition; ii) Analysing the historical growth performance of agricultural sector in selected Indian states; iii) Will higher agricultural GDP necessarily result in higher incomes for farmers; iv) Analysing the current agricultural policy environment to evaluate its efficiency and efficacy, and consolidate all analysis to create a roadmap. These are discussed in 12 chapters, which provide a building block for the concluding chapter that presents a roadmap for revitalising Indian agriculture while ensuring growth in farmers’ incomes.

The book is characterized by an empirical approach to the underlying economic data and a multi-disciplinary approach to the ramifications of agricultural growth. Considered among these are the transformation of the female labor force, population migrations and changes in human welfare. This book differs from the numerous others on Indian agriculture insofar as it takes a regional perspective, focusing on the causes and effects of inter-state variations.

Book Agricultural Growth in India

Download or read book Agricultural Growth in India written by A. Vaidyanathan and published by Oxford Collected Essays. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In these essays a renowned expert examines the persistently slow and uneven growth in Indian agriculture in recent years. Presenting a comprehensive review of trends in output, costs and prices, and crop patterns at the national, state, and district levels, the volume evaluates the impact these trends have on different segments of the rural population and the growing rural-urban disparities. Substantiated by extensive research, the book argues that these patterns reflect changing agrarian structures and rural labour markets; uneven spread of technology and its sub-optimal performance; government policies that are not conducive to efficient use of resources and inputs; and serious deficiencies in the functioning of institutions. The author suggests caution in assessing future growth prospects in the light of the slowing down in domestic demand and the risks of trade liberalization. He argues that agriculture cannot be jacked up to a higher growth trajectory without a significant shift in strategies, priorities, and major institutional reforms. Appreciating the role of technology in raising output, this collection advocates a long-term plan for Indian agriculture with important policy implications. It will be useful for agricultural experts, students and teachers of agriculture, policymakers, researchers, academics, and those actively involved with inclusive growth." -- Book jacket.

Book Changing sources of growth in Indian agriculture Implications for regional priorities for accelerating agricultural growth

Download or read book Changing sources of growth in Indian agriculture Implications for regional priorities for accelerating agricultural growth written by Birthal, Pratap Singh and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2014 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian agriculture was transforming from a cereal-based production system toward high-value crops (HVC) during the 1990s. However, food security concerns resurfaced during the first decade of the 21st century, and the policy environment tilted in favor of cereal-based production systems, especially rice and wheat. This paper revisits an earlier study to evaluate how the policy shift influences the patterns and the sources of agricultural growth in India and assesses their implications for regional priorities for higher, more sustainable, and more inclusive agricultural growth.

The need to increase agricultural output and to use increased output to generate sustained general economic development is a problem facing many Third World countries. This book explores in particular the agricultural growth of the Punjab in Northern India, a country which has long been a leader in the formulation of new development strategies. It shows how agricultural output is affected by, and affects, demographic changes, income distribution, state involvement and structural changes both in society and the economy. Agricultural growth in the Punjab is seen in an historical perspective. In addition, the different aspects of economic development are viewed in an integrated way so that much is learned about the contribution of agricultural growth to the development process. The conclusions drawn can be related to problems and trends worldwide.

Book Agricultural productivity inter sectoral labor shift and economic growth in India

Download or read book Agricultural productivity inter sectoral labor shift and economic growth in India written by Balaji, S. J. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2020-06-29 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we study the transformation process Indian agriculture exhibited in the recent past, studying its policy implications. Between the years 2005-06 and 2015-16, more than 52 million workers left agriculture, which did not have any effect on agricultural output due to productivity improvements. We estimate the contribution of productivity growth and structural change in agriculture to national productivity growth during 1981-2016. We estimate differentials in agricultural productivity and in their ability to contribute to the structural change process for 21 major states of India. Using revised employment estimates, we trace major changes during the pre-reforms (before 1991) and post-reforms periods. Results show that in the pre-reforms period, the impact of productivity improvements in agriculture on agricultural output was equated by the new workforce entering into this sector, leading to a stagnant labor productivity trend. The labor-shift from agriculture during the early years of the post-reforms period, which increased further in the next decade, has led to a consistent rise in agricultural productivity. In the absence of reforms and the associated labor shift, the productivity growth in Indian agriculture would have been much lower. A similar labor shift during the last decade has not affected agricultural output, which has risen more rapidly. This result holds true for almost all states studied. There exists a positive relation between labor-shift and agricultural output in a cluster of states. Decomposition results indicate ‘within-sector’ productivity growth is the major source of overall growth, with a rising contribution of ‘structural change’. Studying the sources of growth across states offers new scope to achieve inter-sectoral productivity convergence.

Book Agricultural Growth Rural Poverty and Environmental Degradation in India

Download or read book Agricultural Growth Rural Poverty and Environmental Degradation in India written by C. H. Hanumantha Rao and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his study of the poverty alleviation programmes, the author finds that even though the poorest of the poor are relatively efficient in utilizing the assistance they receive, the schemes themselves are heavily dependent on the bureaucracy, leading to inefficiencies and leakages. Environmental degradation is attributed to the slow rate of land-augmenting technological change and the inequitable distribution of gains resulting in pressure on the environment from the poor as well as the affluent. On account of the low rate of capital formation and relatively efficient use of available resources, the author sees little scope for raising agricultural output in India merely by freeing the markets. On the basis of his study, Dr Rao recommends stepping up public investment in agriculture, especially in irrigation and research, as essential to raise the growth rate, and to realize the possible gains from trade as well as to ensure the equitable sharing of such gains.
