This six-volume set is a reimagining of the award-winning Encyclopedia of Environmental Management, published in 2013, and features insights from more than 400 contributors, all experts in their field. The experience, evidence, methods, and models used in studying environmental management are presented here in six stand-alone volumes, arranged along the major environmental systems. Features The first handbook that demonstrates the key processes and provisions for enhancing environmental management Addresses new and cutting-edge topics on ecosystem services, resilience, sustainability, food–energy–water nexus, socio-ecological systems, and more Provides an excellent basic knowledge on environmental systems, explains how these systems function, and offers strategies on how to best manage them Includes the most important problems and solutions facing environmental management today In this third volume, Managing Soils and Terrestrial Systems, the general concepts and processes of the geosphere with its related soil and terrestrial systems are introduced. It explains how these systems function and provides strategies on how to best manage them. It serves as an excellent resource for finding basic knowledge on the geosphere systems and includes important problems and solutions that environmental managers face today. This book practically demonstrates the key processes, methods, and models used in studying environmental management.

Book Adoption of Environmental Management Systems in Agriculture Part 1 Case Studies from Australian and New Zealand Farms

Download or read book Adoption of Environmental Management Systems in Agriculture Part 1 Case Studies from Australian and New Zealand Farms written by Genevieve Carruthers and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This publication is Part One of a two part series dealing with environmental management systems in agriculture. It records interviews conducted with over 40 farmers and farm managers in Australia and New Zealand. Some have adopted a recognised EMS process using the specifications of the internationally recognised Standard for EMS, ISO 14001. Others used less formal approaches. Benefits and costs are diverse, as are motivations for adopting environmental management approaches. All those interviewed have made progress in addressing the environmental issues they face in managing their farms."--publisher.

Book Adoption of Environmental Management Systems in Agriculture

Download or read book Adoption of Environmental Management Systems in Agriculture written by Genevieve Carruthers and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Application of environmental management systems (EMS) on farms is in its infancy worldwide, despite its wider application to other industry sectors. In 1999, a national workshop was held at Ballina, NSW Australia, to discuss EMS implementation on Australian farms (Carruthers and Tinning 1999). Since then, the on-going development of EMS in Australian agriculture has gained international attention, with Australia recognised by many as a world leader. However, for many people, both in Australia and overseas, the concept of applying a management process to natural resources on-farm is foreign; scepticism of improved environmental outcomes is common, and uncertainty regarding the benefits of EMS use remains one of the major barriers to support and adoption of this management tool. Application of EMS processes, typically within the secondary industry sector, has led to a perception by some in agricultural industries that use of EMS on farms is \U+2018\beyond farmers', \U+2018\too hard', \U+2018\too complex' and \U+2018\too expensive'. Much of the uncertainty regrading benefits and costs of EMS implementation comes from a lack of information regarding its use in agriculture. Many of the methods of evaluation and measurement of EMS use and success may not be appropriate. This report aimed to assess the usefulness of applying a process of managment more usually associated with secondary industry within an agricultural context."--Executive summary.

Book Toward Sustainable Agricultural Systems in the 21st Century

Download or read book Toward Sustainable Agricultural Systems in the 21st Century written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-07-25 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last 20 years, there has been a remarkable emergence of innovations and technological advances that are generating promising changes and opportunities for sustainable agriculture, yet at the same time the agricultural sector worldwide faces numerous daunting challenges. Not only is the agricultural sector expected to produce adequate food, fiber, and feed, and contribute to biofuels to meet the needs of a rising global population, it is expected to do so under increasingly scarce natural resources and climate change. Growing awareness of the unintended impacts associated with some agricultural production practices has led to heightened societal expectations for improved environmental, community, labor, and animal welfare standards in agriculture. Toward Sustainable Agricultural Systems in the 21st Century assesses the scientific evidence for the strengths and weaknesses of different production, marketing, and policy approaches for improving and reducing the costs and unintended consequences of agricultural production. It discusses the principles underlying farming systems and practices that could improve the sustainability. It also explores how those lessons learned could be applied to agriculture in different regional and international settings, with an emphasis on sub-Saharan Africa. By focusing on a systems approach to improving the sustainability of U.S. agriculture, this book can have a profound impact on the development and implementation of sustainable farming systems. Toward Sustainable Agricultural Systems in the 21st Century serves as a valuable resource for policy makers, farmers, experts in food production and agribusiness, and federal regulatory agencies.

Book Agricultural Waste Management

Download or read book Agricultural Waste Management written by Raymond Loehr and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural Waste Management: Problems, Processes, and Approaches is a summary of the processes and approaches applicable to the solution of agricultural waste management problems. This book is organized into three part encompassing 13 chapters that is intended as a bridge between theory and practice as well as between the many disciplines that are involved in agricultural waste management. The primary focus of agricultural waste management is on the obvious problems of odor control and feedlot runoff. The first part looks into the status of agricultural waste problem and the application of engineering and scientific fundamentals to the management of these wastes. This part also deals with the role of the land in waste management, and then outlines the guidelines for the development of feasible waste management systems. The second part describes the fundamentals, principles, and benefits of various waste management processes, including biological processes, ponds and lagoons, aerobic, anaerobic, physical, and chemical treatments, and nitrogen control; as well as treatment systems, such as ponds, lagoons, and land disposal. The third part examines the integration of the most economical and equitable combination of alternative technologies into feasible waste management approaches. This work will be of great value to agricultural producers and manufacturers, scientists, and engineers.
