Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Entomology: For Students, Farmers, Fruit-Growers and Gardeners A similar development of this work has taken place in the State Experiment Stations, and there are also State Entomological departments working in almost every State, and in many of them two or three different organizations, each with a large quota of workers. Economic entomology in its wider sense covers all those phases of the subject which have to do with insects 0f importance in relation to mankind. The forms which have distinctly agricultural relation are so numerous and represent so completely all the different groups of insects that we are compelled to include a very general survey of the subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Entomology for Beginners: For the Use of Young Folks, Fruit-Growers, Farmers, and Gardeners In preparing this little book the aim has been to make it generally useful to different classes of readers. Beginners in the study will find in it copious directions for collecting and preserving insects, how to form cabinets, how to mount insects for the microscope, and how to prepare them for study, as well as guides to the literature containing the description of species. While amateurs and dilettanti entomologists may find useful hints, the needs of those who wish to make a serious study of these animals have not been overlooked, and it is hoped that the book will be of some service in leading such students to pay more attention to the modes of life, transformations, and structure of insects than has yet been done in this country. The book is also designed as a hand-book for the farmer, the fruit-grower, and the gardener. Besides treating of the elements of the science and the means of ascertaining to what order and family their insect pests belong, the reader is referred to descriptive works and reports for fuller information, while Chapter V. gives the fundamental principles of Economic Entomology, with brief accounts of the more injurious insects and the natural and artificial means of checking their attacks. On account of the prominence given to this topic it is hoped that the book will, with its copious glossary, be serviceable to agricultural editors and useful as a text-book in agricultural schools and colleges. As a first book in entomology it is also designed to be an introduction to the author's "Guide to the Study of Insects." Book Agricultural Entomology

Download or read book Agricultural Entomology written by Dennis S. Hill and published by Timber Press (OR). This book was released on 1994 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural Entomology presents a global view of the insect groups that are of major significance to human resources. "Agriculture" in this broad sense includes plants grown for food, horticultural field crops, and other ornamentals. Information is also included on insect pests of stored products, forest resources, and livestock, although in less detail. The book is intended for use as a college text and reference and assumes a basic knowledge of entomology but is also of great value outside the classroom for its comprehensive and detailed approach. There is a chapter on beneficial insects, including pollinators, honeybees, silkworms, and insects from which shellac and cochineal are made. Hundreds of high-quality line drawings and black-and-white photographs illustrate the insects, and an illustrated glossary and indexes of scientific and common names are provided. Almost all countries of the world are undergoing agricultural diversification programs with the introduction of new and exotic crops. Yet most books on insect pests restrict coverage to one country or region or to the tropics or temperate zones. The global approach of Agricultural Entomology emphasizes the similarities and important differences between insect pests of the major continents. It thus brings attention to insect species that might well spread as pests to new geographical areas. Closely related species are also treated, highlighting problems of control that could result from unsubstantiated identifications. Agricultural Entomology is a valuable resource for growers and gardeners interested in the developing field of integrated pest management. With copious information on the biology of insects around the globe, this authoritative and comprehensive book is an essential tool for anyone interested in understanding both the foes and allies of the insect world.

Book Canada Department of Agriculture Central Experimental Farm

Download or read book Canada Department of Agriculture Central Experimental Farm written by James Fletcher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-03-13 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canada Department of Agriculture, Central Experimental Farm: Report of the Entomologist and Botanist, 1900 Sir, - I have the honour to hand you herewith a report on some of the more important subjects which have been brought officially before the Division of Entomology and Botany during the past season. Owing to the large increase in correspondence and the numerous species of insects and plants inquired about, it has been somewhat difficult to decide what subjects could be most usefully treated of in the present report. I have prepared articles upon those subjects concerning which I thought information would be of most service to the farmers, fruit-growers and gardeners of Canada. Since the fitting up of a new room for the exhibition of specimens, many visitors to the Central Experimental Farm have availed themselves of the opportunity of consulting the collections which are now being gradually arranged and put into shape for reference. Many valuable additions have been made during the year to both the entomological and botanical collections. Considerable progress has been made in the studies of the life-histories of our native insects, both noxious and beneficial, and a fine collection illustrating all stages of their development is being gradually accumulated. During the past year many speci mens of inflated caterpillars have been prepared by Mr. Arthur Gibson, assistant in the Division, and are much admired by visitors. The experiments in growing grasses and other fodder plants have been continued and are of great interest.
