Book The Pacific Rim

Download or read book The Pacific Rim written by Peter N. Nemetz and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the importance of the Pacific Rim as a global centre of large-scale investment, development, and trade continues to increase, so do the potential benefits that Canada and other countries could reap as a result of an increased presence in this diverse region. This book, a revised, and to a large extent new, version of The Pacific Rim: Investment, Development, and Trade (1987), integrates a broad range of current economic data concerning the Pacific Rim with some of the more important theoretical issues in the area of economic development and trade. It demonstrates the paradoxical combination of strength and fragility that characterizes the emerging integrated Pacific Rim economy and attempts to clarify the nature of the framework and constraints that face foreign investors and trading partners.

Book Food Agriculture And Development In The Pacific Basin

Download or read book Food Agriculture And Development In The Pacific Basin written by G. Edward Schuh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-09 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with the management of food production and the distribution of food in the Pacific Basin, exploring food's potential for engendering both increased conflict and cooperation in the region. The authors begin by discussing the role of food and agriculture in the international economy and the implications of two contrasting approaches to food security: international trade and self-sufficiency. They also consider the problem of international migration of labor in the region and look at how agriculture can contribute to the development of the economy in individual countries. The book concludes with a discussion of the prospects for international collaboration in dealing with the domestic and international adjustments required to enhance overall growth and equity in food supply and distribution.

Book excerpt: Analyzing the long-term, historical development of the major economies around the Pacific Rim in language aimed at the general reader, Coming Full Circle throws light on the most important relationships in the region today as well as on the prospects for future economic development and political cooperation. The authors begin with a critique of the popular notion of an integrated "Pacific region," paying particular attention to the influence of geography and environment on population distribution and patterns of regional economic activity. Their study covers the diverse indigenous development of pre-European times, later periods of direct European influence, and the evolution of modern-day urban societies in the region. Finally, they track the rise of the United States and Japan as the dominant regional economic powers and forecast changes we can expect to see in the years ahead, noting in particular the increasing importance of China.

Book US Economic Development Policies Towards the Pacific Rim

Download or read book US Economic Development Policies Towards the Pacific Rim written by N. Wiegersma and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-07-11 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: US aid interventions have greatly advantaged some countries in their quest for development, but not others. The extensive development assistance, technology transfers and market access that the United States government granted Taiwan and South Korea in their development and the aid recently given Costa Rica were important factors in their development successes. On the other hand, the inappropriate policies of the US in Vietnam in the fifties, El Salvador in the eighties and Nicaragua in the nineties, programmed these interventions to economic as well as political failure.

Book The Pacific Rim And The Western World

Download or read book The Pacific Rim And The Western World written by Philip West and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzing the economic, strategic, and cultural elements that shape the attraction--and the friction--between the Pacific and Atlantic communities, this book integrates European perspectives into a discussion that has traditionally been dominated by Asian and U.S. voices. The authors take as their theme the uncertainty created by the Pacific Rim’s new role in shifting the international balances of political and economic power. Economic uncertainty has been fueled by Asia’s trade surpluses with Western Europe and the United States, with the West viewing its system of free world trade as working to the greater advantage of the Asia Pacific. Strategic uncertainty pivots on the U.S.-USSR superpower rivalry and on the growing influence of Japan and the PRC on the strategic balance in the Pacific Basin. A more subtle and powerful constraint surfaces in the realm of culture--in differing perceptions among the people of the Asia Pacific and the West concerning liberal values and the liberal underpinnings of the present system of world trade.

Book The West Pacific Rim

Download or read book The West Pacific Rim written by Rupert Hodder and published by *Belhaven Press. This book was released on 1992-12-08 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This one-of-a-kind guide provides a readable and stimulating introduction to the economic and social geography of the West Pacific Rim (WPR), considered by many as the center of gravity of the world economy. It embraces Japan, China, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Concise, well-written and up-to-date, it offers a view of the entire region as well as individual countries. Three sets of questions are addressed: how successful have the various economies been and what explains their success; what are the geopolitical and geostrategic implications in relation to the Americas, Australia and the Pacific Basin; and what lessons can be drawn for development elsewhere, especially in the Third World.

Book Agriculture in the Trans Pacific Partnership

Download or read book Agriculture in the Trans Pacific Partnership written by United States Department of Agriculture and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-12-09 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a trade and investment agreement under nego-tiation by 12 countries in the Pacific Rim, including the United States. This report assesses the potential impacts of eliminating all agricultural and nonagricultural tariffs and tariff-rate quotas (TRQs) under a TPP agreement on the region's agriculture in 2025-the assumed end date of the pact's implementation-compared with baseline values for 2025 without a TPP. Cutting tariffs is only one of the many goals of the TPP negotiations, but it is an important one for agricultural trade. The value of intraregional agricultural trade in 2025 under a tariff-free, TRQ-free scenario is estimated to be 6 percent, or about $8.5 billion higher (in 2007 U.S. dollars) compared with baseline values. U.S. agricultural exports to the region will be 5 percent, or about $3 billion higher, and U.S. agricultural imports from the region in 2025 will be 2 percent, or $1 billion higher in value compared with the baseline.
