Book Facing the Development Challenge in Mozambique

Download or read book Facing the Development Challenge in Mozambique written by Finn Tarp and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study responds to some of Mozambique's basic development challenges and provides qualitative and quantitative insights for policymaking from an economywide perspective. The report highlights the importance of agricultural development showing agriculture's large sectoral multiplier effects and that applying scarce capital to agriculture is generally more effective than applying it to industry and services. A novel CGE model is developed and used in a series of analyses focused on the impact and design of economic policy. Issues addressed are aid dependency, biases in price incentives facing the agriculture sector, improvement in agricultural technology and marketing margins, risk-reducing behavior and gender roles in agricultural production, and food aid distribution. The study also provides a future perspective and analyzes the Mozambican economy using dynamic macroeconomic modeling techniques, demonstrating that sophisticated analytical tools can be of significant value, even in "data-poor" situations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mozambique, Its Agricultural Development Plantations make mankind broader, as generation makes it thicker. Let the prime undertakers be men of no shallow heads, nor narrow fortunes. Let the planters be honest, skilful, and painful people. Nor must the planters be only honest, but industrious also. What hope is there that they who were drones at home will be bees abroad. Let it have a self-sufficiency, or some staple commodity to balance traffic with other countries. As for a self-sufficiency, few countries can stand alone. Let the planters labour to be loved and feared of the natives. With whom let them use all just bargaining: keeping all covenants, performing all promises with them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Agricultural investments in Mozambique An analysis of investment trends business models and social and environmental conduct

Download or read book Agricultural investments in Mozambique An analysis of investment trends business models and social and environmental conduct written by Filipe Di Matteo and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2016-04-18 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent influx of agricultural investment to Africa is increasingly equated with land grabbing by investors from emerging and Northern economies seeking to produce commodities to serve the needs of their own food and energy markets. This paper reflects on this discourse by unpacking agricultural investments in Mozambique – one of the largest recipients of agricultural investment in Africa. By drawing on official investment data and structured interviews conducted with 69 agricultural investors in Mozambique, this paper analyzes agricultural investment trends, characteristics and the factors that shape investors’ social and environmental conduct. It illustrates that, contrary to popular depiction, regional investors, domestic food end-markets, and private finance are the primary drivers of investment. Moreover, this paper shows that investors differ significantly in the types of strategies, business models and practices they adopt. The findings highlight a lack of nuance in the global agricultural investment discourse and the need for more evidence-based policy intervention in order to adequately leverage the potential of agricultural investments to contribute to inclusive green growth.

Book Territorial Development and Water Energy Food Nexus in the Global South

Download or read book Territorial Development and Water Energy Food Nexus in the Global South written by Laura Montedoro and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-18 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume collects the results from the Politecnico di Milan’s award-winning “Boa_Ma_Nhã, Maputo!” research-by-design project, which studied various transdisciplinary approaches to development in the context of the Global South. The challenges of urbanization are well known, but that only goes so far in aiding implementation. From local considerations like water access and housing rights to global issues like climate change, territorial development demands solutions that address the needs of the specific population while keeping such goals as sustainability and inclusion in mind. By focusing on a number of towns within the Maputo Province of Mozambique, and thus addressing many of the issues endemic to Sub-Saharan Africa, the research, structurally presented so as to aid those who may require introduction to the issue, makes a clear case in favor of always keeping the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus in mind when formulating development strategies for improving people’s lives, as well as the wisdom of marrying academic findings with the insights accrued by local NGOs and institutions, thereby expanding the potential idea bank beyond the Eurocentric status quo that has tended to dominate the field.

Book Facing the Development Challenge in Mozambique

Download or read book Facing the Development Challenge in Mozambique written by Channing Arndt and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following Mozambique's economic collapse in 1986, the country began a wide-ranging process of reform, with the support of the international community. The diagnosis was of an economy that failed to maintain monetary control, consumed beyond its means, focused production excessively on nontraded goods, and relied on inefficient and inflexible microeconomic structures. Nevertheless, Mozambique was also at war. The pace of stabilization and structural adjustment quickened after 1992, when, concurrent with the demise of apartheid, civil strife finally came to an end. After more than 10 years of adjustment, the reform program has now been essentially implemented. Yet, this does not imply, as shown in this study, that sufficient conditions for sustained economic development are in place. Mozambique remains very poor, and even under highly optimistic assumptions about the future, the development process is set to last for decades. This report attempts to respond to some of the basic development challenges facing Mozambique and to provide both qualitative and quantitative insights for policymaking in the years to come. Throughout, the issues addressed are approached from an economy wide perspective. This study forms a part of the multicountry research initiative, Macroeconomic Reforms and Regional Integration in Southern Africa. This initiative covers six countries in the region and pays particular attention to the evaluation of the merits of alternative development strategies. The choice and design of an appropriate development strategy is by no means immediately evident for any developing country. However, for a country with abundant arable land and scarce human and physical capital, such as Mozambique, the role of agriculture in development is particularly interesting. In keeping with the focus on agriculture, a social accounting matrix (SAM) for 1995, with significant agricultural sector detail, was constructed as part of this study. The SAM contains 40 activities, including 13 agricultural and 2 food-processing activities, 3 factors of production, and 2 households (urban and rural). It captures two innovative but fundamental features of the Mozambican economy: high marketing costs for domestic, imported, and exported goods; and the significant prevalence of home consumption, particularly for rural households.

Book Integrating Environmental Issues Into a Strategy for Sustainable Agricultural Development

Download or read book Integrating Environmental Issues Into a Strategy for Sustainable Agricultural Development written by Alemneh Dejene and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government of Mozambique, in conjunction with the World Bank and other donor agencies, is preparing a strategy for agricultural development in Mozambique. For this strategy to promote sustainable development, it must take into consideration the environmental implications of the proposed courses of action. The strategy should identify vital environmental risks associated with the development of natural resources and suggest alternative ways to reduce these risks and to ensure sustainability. This paper identifies the most important factors affecting the environment in Mozambique as they relate to agricultural and rural development. The paper also discusses developments in other economic and social spheres which have an impact on the development of the agricultural sector as well as the potential risks they may pose to the environment.
