Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Botany, Theoretical and Practical The farm seeds are also drawn to a uniform scale their rela tive sizes may therefore be seen at a glance. In this as in all scientific study, practical work is absolutely essential to a proper understanding of the subject; in recognition of the importance of such work I have introduced into the text of the volume a series of exercises and experiments, illustrative of the principles and facts to be studied. These and others, which will suggest themselves to intelligent students, should be attacked and carried out in the spirit of research, so that students may learn to observe, record and discover things themselves. In conclusion, I tender my sincere thanks to my colleague Mr Cousins, and also to Mr W. H. Hammond, Milton Chapel, Canterbury, and Dr A. B. Rendle, of the British Museum (natural History Department), for valuable criticism and assist ance in reading through the proofs. Book A Practical Course in Botany

Download or read book A Practical Course in Botany written by E. F. Andrews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Course in Botany: With Especial Reference to Its Bearings on Agriculture, Economics, and Sanitation IN preparing the present volume, the aim of the writer has been to meet all the college entrance requirements and at the same time to bring the study of botany into closer touch with the practical business of life by stressing its relations with agriculture, economies, and, in certain of its aspects, with sani tation. While technical language has been avoided so far as the requirements of scientific accuracy will permit, the student is not encouraged to shirk the use of necessary botani cal terms, out of a mere superstitious fear of words because they happen to be a little new or unfamiliar. Such a practice not only leads to careless and inaccurate modes of expression, but tends to foster a slovenly habit of mind, and in the long run causes the waste of more time and labor in the search after roundabout, and often misleading, substitutes, than it would require to master the proper use of a few new words and phrases. Book Botany Principles and Problems Classic Reprint

Download or read book Botany Principles and Problems Classic Reprint written by Edmund Ware Sinnott and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Botany, Principles and Problems The present volume, an outgrowth Of experience in presenting to college freshmen a course in elementary botany, endeavors to set forth somewhat briefly and concisely the more important facts concerning the morphology, physiology and classification of plants, and to provide a body Of problem material which may be of assistance in stimulating thought and in promoting class discussion. The consideration of structure and function in the earlier portions of the book is confined mainly to the seed plants, and the distinctive characteristics Of the other members of the plant kingdom are discussed in the last five chapters. Should the course be too brief to take up these groups in detail, Chapter XIII, which deals with the main events in the history of the plant kingdom and the important features of its various divisions, may perhaps be used to give the student an idea of the kingdom as a whole. In view Of the importance of the soil in the life Of plants, and in order to emphasize the fact that living things cannot be understood without a knowledge of their environment, an early chapter is devoted entirely to the soil itself. The increased interest in matters pertaining to inheritance has war ranted a special chapter on heredity and variation; and a chapter is also devoted to organic evolution, emphasizing its botanical aspects. The chapters have been so written as to be separately understandable and may readily be taken up in some other order than that in which thev are here presented. The text is not primarily designed for agricultural students but many of the questions naturally involve a practical application of botanical principles and will perhaps commend themselves especially to those whose interest in botany is chiefly agricultural. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Agriculture: Or the Elements of Chemistry, Geology, Botany and Meterology, Applied to Practical Agriculture No apology ought to be required for the appearance of a work like this: the importance of the subjects discussed should secure at least an impartial examination. But from the humiliating consciousness which the author feels of his own inability to do justice to so difficult a task, he is induced to say something by way of explanation, in order if possible, to put himself upon friendly terms with his readers. The importance of an enter prise, however, furnishes no reason to ah incompetent person for at tempting its prosecution. If, after the book has passed the trial of the public prosecutors in be half of science, the critics, - they shall decide against it, the author has no alternative, but must plead guilty: neither will he claim indulgence on the ground of its being the first offence, or plead, in extenuation of his fault, his ignorance of the law in relation to the case. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Botany The material in the book, which is sufficient for a year's course, is so arranged that it can be adjusted to a half-year course when local needs make this desirable. When seasons are favorable it is thought best to follow the order of chapters as given, but seasonal conditions are so diverse in different parts of the country that the teacher is urged to rearrange chapters whenever necessary for adequate illustration of such topics as flowers, seeds, and weeds: If this is done, Chapters I and II may be studied briefly, and then followed by chapters dealing with special topics.
