Book excerpt: Este libro arranca lejos en el tiempo y se ancla fuertemente en el muy diverso territorio de México, donde se ha desplegado por siglos una particularmente rica y compleja argicultura basada en el maíz y otros cultivos originarios. En este dilatado lapso y amplio espacio han convivido, y se han entreverado, distintas maneras de hacer agricultura y saberes alimentarios con cultivos, prácticas agrícolas e instituciones de origen europeo, dando lugar a una agricultura y una cultura alimentaria de suma originalidad sabiduría y riqueza. Por lo menos por cinco siglos, el país se desarrolla y busca, insistente pero sútilmente, una única vía dominante de modernización que ha resultado excluyente y en desmedro del México campesino e indígena. Por eso aquí se intenta, con un enfoque diacrónico, interpretar las diversas etapas históricas del desarrollo agroalimentario en México. En la última parte del libro se hacen diversas propuestas, que pretenden cambiar de enfoque: poner énfasis en los pequeños agricultores campesinos, herederos más directos de aquel núcleo original mesoamericano y que, por cierto, poseen también un claro potencial productivo. Propuestas que, por un lado, dan cuenta de las transformaciones territoriales del país, de las nuevas modalidades en los asentamientos humanos y del imperativo de conservar los recursos naturales y dar valor a nuestra biodiversidad, así como a nuestra rica cultura alimentaria. Por otra parte, se detalla una estrategia de producción a partir de los pequeños productores campesinos, que ahora se dedican a múltiples tareas y que pueden desarrollar cadenas productivas de oferta más vinculadas a sus propias regiones y asentamientos de distinto tamaño. El enfoque da prioridad a la provisión de bienes públicos, no como el único, pero sí como el más importante elemento de esta estrategia, entre otras cosas porque los bienes públicos permitirán dar valor a los activos de los campesinos más pobres, como son sus tierras, sus saberes, sus semillas y sus territorios.
