Book U S Russian cooperation in space

Download or read book U S Russian cooperation in space written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent broad political rapprochement between the United States and the nations of the Former Soviet Union (FSU) has transformed the environment for cooperation on space projects, and led to cooperative programs in space with Russia and other FSU states that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. Chief among these are the high-profile human spaceflight cooperative activities involving the Space Shuttle-Space Station Mir dockings and the International Space Station. This report surveys the potential benefits and drawbacks of expanded cooperation with Russia and other nations of the FSU in space activities, and examines the impacts of closer cooperation on U.S. industry and U.S. national security concerns. Such cooperation has begun to yield scientific, technological, political, and economic benefits to the United States. However, the political and economic risks of cooperating with the Russians are higher than with the United States' traditional partners in space. Cooperation in robotic space science and earth remote sensing is proceeding well, within the stringent limits of current Russian (and U.S.) space budgets. Including Russia in the International Space Station program provides technical and political benefits to the space station partners, but placing the Russian contribution in the critical path to completion also poses programmatic and political risks.

Book Assessing a Mars Agreement Including Human Settlements

Download or read book Assessing a Mars Agreement Including Human Settlements written by Annette Froehlich and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-15 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the nascent discussion of the legal aspects of human exploration and possible settlement of Mars, and provides fresh insights and new ideas in two key areas. The first one revolves around the broader aspects of current space law, such as intellectual property rights in outer space, the legal implications of contact with extra-terrestrial intelligence, legal considerations around the freedom of exploration and use, and the International Space Station agreement as a precedent for Mars. The second one focuses on the creation and management of a new society on Mars, and includes topics such as human reproduction and childbirth, the protection of human rights in privately-funded settlements, legal aspects of a Martian power grid, and criminal justice on the red planet. With multiple national space agencies and commercial enterprises focusing on Mars, it is more than likely that a human presence will be established on the red planet in the coming decades. While the foundation of international space law, laid primarily by the Outer Space Treaty, remains the framework within which humans will engage with Mars, new and unforeseen challenges have arisen, driven particularly by the rapid pace of technological advancement in recent years. To ensure that space law can keep up with these developments, a new scholarly work such as the present one is critical. By bringing together a number of fresh international perspectives on the topic, the book is of interest to all scholars and professionals working in the space field.

Book Dispute Settlement in International Space Law

Download or read book Dispute Settlement in International Space Law written by Gérardine Goh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-06-30 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence of international law, with its rights, rules and regulations is futile without an effective enforcement mechanism that provides a sufficient and adequate remedy. International space law is particularly significant in the evolution of international dispute settlement because it involves a consideration of issues from an international and interdisciplinary perspective. These issues range from policies of regional and international organizations; to juridical dispute settlement and global governance; to fiscal entrepreneurship and business efficacy; and to scientific breakthroughs and technological advances. In this context, this book looks at an international and interdisciplinary approach in dealing with dispute resolution in space activities. It proposes a workable legal framework for dispute resolution in outer space, together with a mechanism for enforcement and verification.

Book Space Law A Case Study for the Practitioner

Download or read book Space Law A Case Study for the Practitioner written by George S. Robinson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space Law: A Case Study for the Practitioner: Implementing a Telecommunications Satellite Business Concept concentrates on the law governing commercial space ventures, commercial telecommunications satellite projects, in particular. The telecommunications satellite industry is by far the most mature of all the commercial space industries with a commensurate body of law governing it, and many of the same types of regulatory processes and private law transactions discussed in this book also pertain to the implementation of other commercial, and even non-commercial and military space ventures. The reader will find a clear description of the necessary legal actions lawyer and client must take to provide for the construction, launching and operation of a privately-owned telecommunications satellite. Both international and national laws and regulations pertaining to space projects are discussed. A step-by-step approach to legal actions has been adopted to help make the book a practical, easy-to-use reference tool. It is designed to assist lawyers in private practice, government attorneys, corporate legal counsel, entrepreneurial executives and teachers and students of space law.

Book Small Satellites and Sustainable Development Solutions in International Space Law

Download or read book Small Satellites and Sustainable Development Solutions in International Space Law written by Kiran Krishnan Nair and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-08 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the ability of existing international law to address common vulnerabilities in connection with the recent emergence of small satellites, and how finding consensus in this context can pave the way to the sustainable development of space. The rise of small satellite constellations has produced a paradigm shift in the use of space capabilities, suddenly making them far more available and affordable. This development has in turn sparked substantial global interest in finding ways to capitalize on the new opportunities and to mitigate the challenges posed by these mega-constellations. This work targets precisely that need, offering a valuable asset for readers from the commercial space industry, investors, lawyers, researchers, academics and policymakers alike.

Book Ronald Reagan and the Space Frontier

Download or read book Ronald Reagan and the Space Frontier written by John M. Logsdon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Ronald Reagan was elected in 1980, limits on NASA funding and the lack of direction under the Nixon and Carter administrations had left the U.S. space program at a crossroads. In contrast to his predecessors, Reagan saw outer space as humanity’s final frontier and as an opportunity for global leadership. His optimism and belief in American exceptionalism guided a decade of U.S. activities in space, including bringing the space shuttle into operation, dealing with the 1986 Challenger accident and its aftermath, committing to a permanently crewed space station, encouraging private sector space efforts, and fostering international space partnerships with both U.S. allies and with the Soviet Union. Drawing from a trove of declassified primary source materials and oral history interviews, John M. Logsdon provides the first comprehensive account of Reagan’s civilian and commercial space policies during his eight years in the White House. Even as a fiscal conservative who was hesitant to increase NASA’s budget, Reagan’s enthusiasm for the space program made him perhaps the most pro-space president in American history.

Book Transatlantic Space Politics

Download or read book Transatlantic Space Politics written by Sheng-Chih Wang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-29 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines transatlantic politics through an analysis of 60 years of US-European strategic interaction in space. The significance of space politics for the study of transatlantic relations receives surprisingly little scholarly attention. As a theatre of interaction, transatlantic space politics reflects the vicissitudes of European and US power in the international system. An understanding of space politics is therefore vital in understanding the status and prospect of the transatlantic order. Using established IR theories, the author investigates transatlantic space politics and proposes a theoretical explanation, which is distinct from the conventional wisdom of the transatlantic security community. More specifically, he distinguishes between the constitutive and regulatory effects of the transatlantic security community, an approach rarely employed in other research in the field. Overall, this book suggests not only that the transatlantic institutional pillar requires repair, but also that the ideational factors need to be revitalised in order to consolidate the transatlantic alliance. This book will be of much interest to students of space power, transatlantic politics, strategic studies, foreign policy and IR/security studies in general.
