Book excerpt: The International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures (IDRC) builds on the strong momentum created by and the achievements of both the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001-2010) and the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures (2010). It is to be understood as a commitment for addressing the urgent need to take into account and clearly demonstrate new articulations between cultural diversity and universal values. The rapprochement of cultures implies that international security and social inclusion cannot be attained sustainably without a commitment to such principles as compassion, conviviality, hospitality, solidarity and brotherhood which are the corner stones of human coexistence inherent in all faiths and secular ideologies. The current surge of flaring conflicts, acts of violence and intolerance demands urgent actions. Peoples and nations have to join forces for the development of a universal global consciousness free from racial, ethnic and social prejudices. The United Nations have proclaimed the period 2013-2022 as "International Decade for the Rapprochement of Cultures" to address these global challenges, with UNESCO as the lead agency for the United Nations system.

Book The Coalition and the Constitution

Download or read book The Coalition and the Constitution written by Vernon Bogdanor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-25 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `England', Benjamin Disraeli famously said, `does not love coalitions'. But 2010 saw the first peace-time coalition in Britain since the 1930s. The coalition, moreover, may well not be an aberration. For there are signs that, with the rise in strength of third parties, hung parliaments are more likely to recur than in the past. Perhaps, therefore, the era of single-party majority government, to which we have become accustomed since 1945, is coming to an end. But is the British constitution equipped to deal with coalition? Are alterations in the procedures of parliament or government needed to cope with it? The inter-party agreement between the coalition partners proposes a wide ranging series of constitutional reforms, the most important of which are fixed-term parliaments and a referendum on the alternative vote electoral system, to be held in May 2011. The coalition is also proposing measures to reduce the size of the House of Commons, to directly elect the House of Lords and to strengthen localism. These reforms, if implemented, could permanently alter the way we are governed. This book analyses the significance of coalition government for Britain and of the momentous constitutional reforms which the coalition is proposing. In doing so it seeks to penetrate the cloud of polemic and partisanship to provide an objective analysis for the informed citizen.

Book A Hermeneutics of Religious Education

Download or read book A Hermeneutics of Religious Education written by David Aldridge and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to understand a religion? How should the concept of truth be addressed in the contemporary classroom? What is the proper subject matter of religious education and how does it relate to other subjects and the school curriculum as a whole? Despite the prevalence of literature on these subjects, these issues are far from resolved and consequently the place and nature of religious education in our schools is precarious and confused. A Hermeneutics of Religious Education argues that although the tradition of philosophical hermeneutics has transformed both educational thought and the academic discipline of religious studies, the literature of religious education pedagogy has paid only limited attention to these developments. To engage with them fully entails a transformation of our understanding of religious education and its importance in a curriculum of the twenty-first century.

Book EBOOK Childhood and Human Value Development Separation and Separability

Download or read book EBOOK Childhood and Human Value Development Separation and Separability written by Nick Lee and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2005-07-16 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "At the centre of Nick Lee's new book is a subtle exploration of the 'separability' of adults and children. Through this the recent emergence of children as participants in social life is given a fresh perspective, one that is unsettling to opponents and proponents of children's rights alike. Crucial to this, he addresses the relationship between children and adults as part of their shared but problematic human becoming, thus setting out what should, in my view, be the main terrain of childhood studies. This is a book that all scholars of childhood should read and from which they will gain immensely." Alan Prout, Professor of Sociology, University of Stirling For millennia children have been valued as possessions - valued by their parents as ‘my’ child and valued by communities and cultures as ‘belonging’ to them. Recently, a new way of valuing children has emerged – valuing them as people in possession of themselves, as people who have rights. This has led to fears that rights will erode love between parents and children, and separate children from their communities and cultures. Childhood and Human Value explains why people feel this way and argues that they are mistaken. Adults in modern societies have separation anxieties about children’s rights, because they are used to measuring human value against a standard of ‘separateness’. The more separate you appear to be from the opinions and control of others, the more valuable you seem. This highly original and accessible book shows us how to resolve the conflict between ‘love’ and ‘rights’ in contemporary relationships between adults and children. Examining a number of Twentieth Century developmental thinkers, including Vygotsky, Winnicott, Gilligan and Deleuze and Guattari, Nick Lee argues that a more flexible and realistic understanding of the sources of human value is available to us, based on ‘separability’. Childhood and Human Value is key reading for students in a variety of fields including sociology of childhood, family studies, sociology of education, psychology of development, and childhood studies. It is also of interest to professionals who work with children, for example social workers, teachers, and the police.
