Book From God S Mouth to My Ears

Download or read book From God S Mouth to My Ears written by Agnes Davis and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was designed as a Daily Affirmation tool. I suggest that you select one each day, at random and you might find that it is the right one for whatever situation you are experiencing on that very day. When it comes to prayer and our quiet time with God, most of us simply want to talk -- to tell God about all of our hopes, desires, painful hurts and sorrows. While God desperately wants to hear from us, once in a great while someone comes along to remind us again that more of our time with God should be spent listening rather than talking. Agnes Davis has accomplished that in From Gods Mouth to My Ears. What a gift she has provided to us as she shares her deepest moments with God! I have found these brief devotionals to be uplifting, encouraging, and challenging. This is a much needed work that many of us have searched for for a long time. Rev. Joe A. Walker

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wasn’t That a Mighty Day: African American Blues and Gospel Songs on Disaster takes a comprehensive look at sacred and secular disaster songs, shining a spotlight on their historical and cultural importance. Featuring newly transcribed lyrics, the book offers sustained attention to how both Black and white communities responded to many of the tragic events that occurred before the mid-1950s. Through detailed textual analysis, Luigi Monge explores songs on natural disasters (hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and earthquakes); accidental disasters (sinkings, fires, train wrecks, explosions, and air disasters); and infestations, epidemics, and diseases (the boll weevil, the jake leg, and influenza). Analyzed songs cover some of the most well-known disasters of the time period from the sinking of the Titanic and the 1930 drought to the Hindenburg accident, and more. Thirty previously unreleased African American disaster songs appear in this volume for the first time, revealing their pertinence to the relevant disasters. By comparing the song lyrics to critical moments in history, Monge is able to explore how deeply and directly these catastrophes affected Black communities; how African Americans in general, and blues and gospel singers in particular, faced and reacted to disaster; whether these collective tragedies prompted different reactions among white people and, if so, why; and more broadly, how the role of memory in recounting and commenting on historical and cultural facts shaped African American society from 1879 to 1955.

Book The Tragic Story of the Empress of Ireland

Download or read book The Tragic Story of the Empress of Ireland written by Logan Marshall and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century after it sank to the bottom of the St. Lawrence River, the ruin of the Empress of Ireland has remained one of the most devastating tragedies in maritime history. Logan Marshall’s vivid and detailed reportage was the first account of the disaster and has endured as a classic chronicle of what happened that fateful night. On May 28, 1914, the grand ocean liner, the Empress of Ireland, left Quebec on the St. Lawrence River, bound for an Atlantic crossing to Liverpool, England. At a few minutes before two o’clock on the morning of Friday, May 29, the Empress sighted the Norwegian collier, Storstad, at the same time as a heavy fog bank was descending. Despite warnings and evasive maneuvers, the Empress was struck on the starboard side by the Storstad, which penetrated its hull by twelve feet. The captain and crew had less than fifteen minutes to save their passengers before the ship slipped under the waves. Of the 1,475 aboard, 1,078 perished in a matter of minutes. It remains the worst peacetime catastrophe in Canadian history. In addition to his unforgettable account of the sinking, Logan Marshall also presents a gripping retelling of the Titanic disaster, as well as other maritime tragedies. For decades, Marshall’s account of the Empress of Ireland has remained the definitive version, comparable to Walter Lord’s chronicle of the Titanic sinking, A Night to Remember. CENTENNIAL EDITION: INCLUDES PHOTOS AND A NEW AFTERWORD UPDATING THE STORY

Book excerpt: Research on the Cox family genealogy was begun by Rev. Simeon O. Coxe (1877-1955). Verl F. Weight (one of the many descendants of the Cox family) and Mrs. Charles W. Cox (Willie Miller) further researched, compiled and published the information into the first edition in mimeographed copies in 1962. When time took its toll on these copies and years of work began to fade away, Mary Carol Cox volunteered to retype and publish As A Tree Grows into a paperback book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography has thirty-one chapters, over eighty thousand words, and over two hundred illustrations, photos, or diagrams. Billy Graham, the world-famous evangelist, once described his wife, Ruth Bell Graham, as the world's greatest Christian. Stan Berg, the author of June's biography, is convinced that June is the greatest Christian that he has ever known. June portrays the Christian love, the cornerstone of the Christian religion, always smiling, friendly, and dedicated to the Lutheran Church. One entire chapter of this book (the longest) is so dedicated in chapter 8, "June and the Lutheran Church." It was June's influence that changed the author Stan from a declared agnostic to a devoted and dedicated Christian. One chapter (chapter 30) tells the story of June's Christian love in the chapter on "June and a Little Girl from Africa." The book traces June's life through her early (Great Depression), middle, and elderly years, including her Alzheimer's years. Her many worldwide forensic-science travels are detailed. June and Stan traveled the world attending about 170 forensic-science conferences in Russia, Hungary, Austria, London, Edinburgh, Rome, the Vatican, Zurich, Canada, Mexico, and Dusseldorf, Germany. London was June's favorite city where she visited nine times and made personal friends of the Bruce's, south of London in Bexley, Kent. June also had an interest in Sherlock Holmes and visited his London haunts and twice stayed at the Sherlock Holmes Hotel. Stan often described June as his Dr. Watson for a lifetime!
