Download or read book Aging with Dignity Living with Grace written by David H. Brady and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 4th 2010, I had stopped by a woman's home to speak to her 21 year-old son, at her request. It turns out he was suffering from severe mental illness. Without warning, he punched me so hard I flew through the air, landed on my back and then found him on top of me with my arms pinned under his legs while he drove about six or seven rage filled punches into my head sending my skull smashing into the solid hard-wood kitchen floor. The result of that incident: I have brain damage that has dramatically impacted every aspect of my life; impaired my ability to do the work I've done all of my career as a writer/producer/director on 130 prime time television episodes and 4 feature films and left me wondering, how do I overcome these challenges? As a result, I got to thinking, "how many other people, especially those who are either middle aged, or those of us who are 'baby boomers, ' get blindsided by some event that they didn't see coming?" In this book, I tell you how I was able to overcome this adversity, find peace of mind and prosperity as a mature person.

  • Author : Kathleen Dowling Singh
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster

Download or read book The Grace in Aging written by Kathleen Dowling Singh and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to use your later years for awakening and spiritual growth. Encouraging, inspiring, and practical, The Grace in Aging invites all those who have ever experienced spiritual longing to awaken in their twilight years. Since aging, in and of itself, does not lead to spiritual maturity, The Grace in Aging suggests and explores causes and conditions that we can create in our lives, just as we are living them, to allow awakening to unfold -- transforming the predictable sufferings of aging into profound opportunities for growth in clarity, love, compassion, and peace. Kathleen Dowling Singh streamlines vast and complex teachings into skillful means and wise views. Straightforward language and piercing questions bring Singh's teachings into the sharp focus of our own lives; the contemplative nature of each chapter allows for an uncommon depth of inquiry. Examples from our lives and from the chatter in our own minds touch the reader personally, offering the chance to absorb the implications deeply and do the work of freeing his or her own mind. Ecumenical in spirit, tone, and language, Singh offers wisdom from teachers from a variety of spiritual backgrounds: Thich Nhat Hanh, the Apostles, Annie Dillard, and more. Lessening our attachments, decreasing our aversions, unbinding what binds us, we bear witness to the possibility of awakening for all beings. The Grace in Aging offers guidelines for older individuals of any wisdom tradition who wish to awaken before they die; no need for caves or seven-year retreats. This is spiritual practice for the lives we live.

Download or read book Dying with Grace written by Fran A. Repka and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about living, even as one is dying. It is a book about the choices we make: choosing spiritual risk rather than security; choosing surrender to a hunger for God, rather than hanging on to life or fighting death. It is a book on how the quality of ones relationships with God, creation, self, and others can either help or hinder the dying process. Living well does indeed contribute to dying well. Dying with Grace: a Conscious Commitment to the Dying Process is the story of Franks ability to let go of control, enjoy his last days, and move toward the unknown and unknowable. Though alert in mind and spirit, Franks body was as good as paralyzed. Yet he remained curious about walking through the valley of death, leaning into the process with dignity and grace. Experiencing pain and suffering, joy and love, he lived life immersed in the rhythm of nature, and died in that same rhythm. To the very end, he never lost consciousness. Dying with Grace is written as a reflective text for family members who are caring for dying relatives; for parish workers, nurses, and social workers assisting individuals and families during the dying process. The book sheds light on what it means to die as one lives and invites the reader to contemplate just how the dying experience may be spiritually transformative for both family and friends as well as for the one who is passing. The frightened, the skeptical, the devastated, the hope-filled, faith believers and non-believers alike can benefit from this book.

Download or read book Aging with Grace written by David Snowdon and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2008-11-19 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1986 Dr. David Snowdon, one of the world’s leading experts on Alzheimer’s disease, embarked on a revolutionary scientific study that would forever change the way we view aging—and ultimately living. Dubbed the “Nun Study” because it involves a unique population of 678 Catholic sisters, this remarkable long-term research project has made headlines worldwide with its provocative discoveries. Yet Aging with Grace is more than a groundbreaking health and science book. It is the inspiring human story of these remarkable women—ranging in age from 74 to 106—whose dedication to serving others may help all of us live longer and healthier lives. Totally accessible, with fascinating portraits of the nuns and the scientists who study them, Aging with Grace also offers a wealth of practical findings: • Why building linguistic ability in childhood may protect against Alzheimer’s • Which ordinary foods promote longevity and healthy brain function • Why preventing strokes and depression is key to avoiding Alzheimer’s • What role heredity plays, and why it’s never too late to start an exercise program • How attitude, faith, and community can add years to our lives A prescription for hope, Aging with Grace shows that old age doesn’t have to mean an inevitable slide into illness and disability; rather it can be a time of promise and productivity, intellectual and spiritual vigor—a time of true grace.

Those are just a few of the fifty-two reflections on the changes, challenges, and blessings of loving your parent as they grow older. Their lives--and yours--begin to change. Knowing that you are not alone, that others have been where you are, is encouraging and uplifting. This is not a how-to, but a me-too, as you see yourself and your own situation lived out in the stories of others.
