Download or read book Aging Savings and Pensions in the Group of Seven Countries written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the next 30-40 years, past changes in fertility and mortality will lead to a significant increase in the share of the elderly. This study suggests that these demographic trends may lead to a decline in the G-7 private savings rate after 2000, compounding the impact of social expenditure pressures on the government’s deficit. Moreover, public pensions may decline as a share of the consumption needs of the elderly, leading to financial pressures to reduce their consumption. The reduced burden of child support on the working population will not offset the increased burden of societal support for the elderly.

This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the autumn of 1990 there was a sense of change taking place in the world economy. Readiness for war was occurrin~ in the Middle East and a recession was already underway in a few major countries. The forces of reform and political re-shaping were visible in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. We economists, gathering in Osaka, Japan, under the auspices of the International Institute for Advanced Studies (Kyoto) could recognize that the Cold War was over and that politico-economic restructuring would take place among the powers in the Warsaw Treaty Organization. Much has happened since the latter part of 1990 to affect international economic stability. The events of that period were both positive and negative for economic stability, but our concern was weighted towards the negative side. Dur charge and sponsorship was scholarly, and the papers from the learned contributors to the symposium and this resulting volume used the many tools of economic analysis to try to understand the ongoing developments. In the intervening period, while this volume was being prepared and edited, we did not cnange our viewpoints in any fundamental way, and we can take satisfaction in the way our symposium either relates to the unfolding sequence of events in a substantive sense or provides a framework in which to study these events.

This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of population aging are examined with the aid of a theoretical model and simulations of MULTIMOD. An older population will consume more of aggregate disposable income, require higher government expenditure, and decrease labor supply. These effects should raise real interest rates and lower the capital stock and output. Effects on current balances will depend on the relative speed and extent of aging. Simulations of projected demographic changes suggest that by 2025, real interest rates would be increased by several percentage points and net foreign assets increased in the United States, and decreased in Japan and Germany, as a result.
Download or read book Handbook of Population and Family Economics written by Mark Richard Rosenzweig and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of chapters in the Handbook of population and family economics and their organization reflect the most recent developments in economics pertaining to population issues and the family. The rationale, contents, and organization of the Handbook evolve from three premises. First, the family is the main arena in which population outcomes are forged. Second, there are important interactions and significant causal links across all demographic phenomena. Third, the study of the size, composition, and growth of a population can benefit from the application of economic methodology and tools. The diversity and depth of the work reviewed and presented in the Handbook conveys both the progress that has been made by economists in understanding the forces shaping population processes, including the behavior of families, and the many questions, empirical and theoretical, that still remain.

Download or read book Macroeconomic Modelling of the Long Run written by Colin P. Hargreaves and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1992 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book presents new original material on the economic modelling of the long run by some of the world's leading economists. There is great interest now in modelling the 'long run' occasioned by substantial changes to the supply side of the world economy (the break up of the USSR, Europe 1992, the Gulf War) and also fears over the sustainability of external debt positions. New techniques have arisen to address these issues, in particular supply side modelling and the new co-integration methodology for statistical analysis of the long run. In addition to explaining the theoretical developments, this book presents many practical applications showing the value of the new techniques. This book will be essential reading for economic researchers and advanced students of macroeconomics.

Book excerpt: Over the next 50 years the workforce in most developed nations will decline while the proportion of elderly will nearly double. The change is expected to lead to sluggish growth rates and to put a brake on rising living standards. This book reviews and analyzes major econometric studies of the macroeconomic impact of rising old-age dependency ratios. It also examines the potential for gains in productivity and technological innovations to counter the effect of global aging.
