Book Aggressive Christianity

Book excerpt: This collection of lectures by Catherine Booth and William Booth form a passionate call to Christians to improve the dire social status of society's poor and downtrodden. Along with her husband William Booth, who assisted in the preparation and publication of this splendid book, Catherine Booth was a fervent supporter of Christian charity; extending support and aid to help the disadvantaged was seen by the author to be a crucial tenet of good character. Throughout her life, Catherine Booth would point to Christ as a prime example of a Christian virtue and self-sacrifice. At the time Catherine Booth wrote these talks in the late 19th century, levels of poverty in the United States and Europe were abysmally great. It is by casting her gaze back to the life of Jesus Christ that Booth sees a clear inspiration for all in the face of such degradation. Only when Christians unite in opposition to poverty will social reform and improvements take hold in wider society.

As a co-founder of the Salvation Army, Booth used her influence to encourage her fellow man to undertake assistance for the poor. Through hard work, many who would otherwise have collapsed under the burden of poverty were able to get on their feet and live good lives again. To this day, the Salvation Army carries out good works in the same spirit expressed by these early lectures.

Book Must Christianity Be Violent

Download or read book Must Christianity Be Violent written by Kenneth R. Chase and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-07-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Crusades. The Conquest of the Americas. U.S. Slavery. The Jewish Holocaust. Mention of these events evokes a variety of responses from Christians, including guilt, defensiveness, and bewilderment. Given such a tangled historical relationship to aggression and injustice, how can Christians answer those who argue that our faith is inherently violent, or that Christian doctrines inevitably lead to sacrifice, conquest, and war? In Must Christianity Be Violent? editors Kenneth R. Chase and Alan Jacobs have gathered pointed essays that provide specific responses to these arguments. Divided into "histories," "practices," and "theologies," the essays explore the historical causation of Christian violence and discuss practices that promote what one contributor calls "just peacemaking." The contributors explore the history of Christian violence and advocate the need for an uncompromised biblical theology in our search for peace. This timely collection will appeal to readers of Christian history, ethics, and theology, and those who want to better understand the specifically Christian response to violence and cultivation of peace.

Excerpt: ...I hope it may be the same with many of yon. When the Iord comes to His Temple and fills it with His glory, you won't know what to do. You must find vent somewhere, or you will be as the poor old negro said he was--" Ready to bust his waistcoat." We feel so about temporal things. People drop down dead with joy. People shriek with grief. People's hearts stand still with wonder at the news they have heard, perhaps from some prodigal boy. I heard of a mother, not long ago, whom some one injudiciously told of the sudden return of her son, who dropped down dead, and never spoke. And when the Master comes to His Temple, that glorious blessed Holy Saviour, whom you profess so to long after and to love, and who has been absent so many years, and whom you have been seeking after with strong crying and tears, when He comes, do you think it will be too much to shout your song, or go on your face, or do any extravagant thing? Oh! no, if there is reality, you cannot help yourself. The manifestation will be according to your nature. One will fall down and weep in quietness, and the other will get up and shout and jump. You cannot help it. I haves read of two martyrs one of whom rejoiced in the realisation of God's presence, and the other was in darkness, yet did not deny his Lord. He continued in the way of obedience, and the other was encouraging him to hope and believe that the Master would come; but He had not come, when they started from the dungeon to the stake; so they fixed upon a sign, and the or e said to the other, " If He comes, you will give me the sign on the road." The Master did come, but the martyr could not confine himself to the sign. He shouted, raising his arms to his fellow-martyr, "He's come, He's come, ...

Download or read book Papers on Aggressive Christianity Dodo Press written by Mrs Booth and published by . This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catherine Booth (1829-1890) was the wife of the founder of The Salvation Army, William Booth. Because of her influence in the formation of The Salvation Army she was known as the 'Army Mother'. Catherine was a member of the local Band of Hope and a supporter of the national Temperance Society. She began to be more active in the work of the church at Brighouse. At that time, it was unheard of for women to speak in adult meetings; however, she was convinced that women had an equal right to speak. The Booths began the work of The Christian Mission in 1865. The name was changed in 1878 to The Salvation Army and William Booth became known as the General. She was behind many of the changes in the new organization, designing the flag and bonnets for the ladies, and contributed to the Army's ideas on many important issues and matters of belief. Her works include: Papers on Practical Religion (1879) and Papers on Aggressive Christianity (1883).
