Book Common Factors and Cointegration of Japan s Aggregate Import Demand Function

Download or read book Common Factors and Cointegration of Japan s Aggregate Import Demand Function written by Tuck Cheong Tang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well documented in the literature that Japan's aggregate demand for imported goods and services is determined by income and relative price of imports. However, the findings based on cointegration methods are mixed and to some extent conflicting. The aim of this study is to examine the influence of a set of "common factors" on the empirical evidence of the long-run behavior of import demand relationship, and to identify whether any of the "common factors" are responsible for the ambiguous results reported in the literature. Three major candidate "common factors" have been empirically identified from the relevant literature and the data obtained from previous studies for Japan. These are data frequency, the choice of domestic activity variable and the cointegration testing method. The sample period of the present investigation covers nearly four decades, extending from 1970 to 2007. The empirical results demonstrate that the three "common factors" do simultaneously explain the divergent findings of cointegratedness of Japan's aggregate import demand function as well as the differences in the long-run elasticity estimates. The study yields some empirical support for the conclusion that the testing technique is the main factor that explains the divergence in cointegration findings for Japan's import demand relation. Generally speaking, the existing empirical studies of long¬-run aggregate import demand have indiscriminately employed the standard empirical specifications, the latest co integration tests and the updated data available. The significance of this study derives from the fact that the cointegration findings for Japan's aggregate import demand function convey useful information to policy¬makers for formulating Japan's trade policies. More explicitly, the long-run responses of imports of goods and services to their macroeconomic determinants (real income and relative price) support the view that fiscal policy and exchange rate policy would be effective in influencing Japan's external imbalances. On the other hand, the open economy macro equilibrium perspective shows that the financial sector (financial factors) also plays a role in determining the aggregate demand for imports. Aggregate import demand functions derived from this general equilibrium model are supported by positive co integration findings from Japan's data. The cointegratedness of the general equilibrium equations as well as the estimated elasticities of domestic activity and relative price are also influenced by the "common factors" and their interactions.

Book Exchange Rate Pass Through

Download or read book Exchange Rate Pass Through written by David C. Parsley and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been suggested that recent findings of a decline in aggregate exchange rate pass-through are due to changes in demand elasticities within the U.S., or to changes in competitive (supply) conditions in for those imports. An alternate explanation is that the commodity composition of U.S. imports has shifted in such a was as to change the overall pass-through. Evidence supportive of this conjecture is presented. We find, using sectoral level volume and import prices of imports from Japan, that U.S. imports are now more heavily concentrated in those sectors with traditionally low pass-through, whereas individual sector passthrough estimations are stable throughout the sample.

Book The Demand for Imports and Exports in the World Economy

Download or read book The Demand for Imports and Exports in the World Economy written by W. Charles Sawyer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume responds to one of the more important issues in applied international economics: the extent to which trade flows adjust to changes in income, relative prices and exchange rates. This work surveys the literature on empirical estimation of the demand for imports and exports for the US. The book is designed to be a reference book for both academic international economists and international trade practitioners in government, international organisations and the private sector.

Book From Firm Level Imports to Aggregate Productivity

Download or read book From Firm Level Imports to Aggregate Productivity written by Mr.JaeBin Ahn and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the Korean manufacturing firm-level data, this paper confirms that three stylized facts on importing hold in Korea: the ratio of imported inputs in total inputs tends to be procyclical; the use of imported inputs increases productivity; and larger firms are more likely to use imported inputs. As a result, we find that firm-level import decisions explain a non-trivial fraction of aggregate productivity fluctuations in Korea over the period between 2006 and 2012. Main findings of this paper suggest a possible link between the recent global productivity slowdown and the global trade slowdown.

Book India s Recent Macroeconomic Performance

Download or read book India s Recent Macroeconomic Performance written by Muneesh Kapur and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The macroeconomic policy response in India after the North Atlantic financial crisis (NAFC) was rapid. The overshooting of the stimulus and its gradual withdrawal sowed seeds for inflationary and BoP pressures and growth slowdown, then exacerbated by domestic policy bottlenecks and volatility in international financial markets during mid-2013. Appropriate domestic oil prices and fiscal consolidation will contribute to the recovery of private sector investment. Fiscal consolidation would also facilitate a reduction in inflation, which would moderate gold imports and favorably impact real exchange rate and current account deficit.

Book Managing Currency Risk

Download or read book Managing Currency Risk written by Takatoshi Ito and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates how exporters’ decisions regarding choice of invoice currency can be influenced by many factors including firm size, product competitiveness, intra/inter-firm trades, and the geography of export destination. The aim is to enhance our understanding of exporters’ behavior in terms of managing currency risk. It contains detailed research and insightful data focusing on Japanese exporters and shows how they face an important trade-off in choosing the invoice currency. If exports are invoiced in yen, then exchange rate fluctuations will pass through to retail prices ultimately affecting sales volumes. However, if they choose to invoice in the importer’s currency, then sales volumes are largely unchanged.
