Book Theories of Empire 1450 1800

Download or read book Theories of Empire 1450 1800 written by David Armitage and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theories of Empire, 1450-1800 draws upon published and unpublished work by leading scholars in the history of European expansion and the history of political thought. It covers the whole span of imperial theories from ancient Rome to the American founding, and includes a series of essays which address the theoretical underpinnings of the Spanish, Portuguese, French, British and Dutch empires in both the Americas and in Asia. The volume is unprecedented in its attention to the wider intellectual contexts within which those empires were situated - particularly the discourses of universal monarchy, millenarianism, mercantalism, and federalism - and in its mapping of the shift from Roman conceptions of imperium to the modern idea of imperialism.

Book Edward Gibbon and Empire

Download or read book Edward Gibbon and Empire written by Rosamond McKitterick and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-18 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines Gibbon's interpretations of empire and the intellectual context in which he formulated them against a background of the eighteenth- and late twentieth-century knowledge of late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Gibbon's ideas of empire, his understanding of monarchy and the balance of power, his sources and working methods, the structure of the History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, his attitude towards the barbarians, the contrasting treatments of the eastern and western Empire, his appreciation of past civilizations and their material remains, his audience and their reactions - contemporary and Victorian - are considered in the light of the latest research on eighteenth-century intellectual history on the one hand and on late antiquity, Byzantium and the Middle Ages on the other. The book breaks new ground in taking the form of a dialogue between experts on the fields about which Gibbon himself wrote, and eighteenth-century intellectual historians.

Download or read book The Government of Desire written by Miguel de Beistegui and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberalism, Miguel de Beistegui argues in The Government of Desire, is best described as a technique of government directed towards the self, with desire as its central mechanism. Whether as economic interest, sexual drive, or the basic longing for recognition, desire is accepted as a core component of our modern self-identities, and something we ought to cultivate. But this has not been true in all times and all places. For centuries, as far back as late antiquity and early Christianity, philosophers believed that desire was an impulse that needed to be suppressed in order for the good life, whether personal or collective, ethical or political, to flourish. Though we now take it for granted, desire as a constitutive dimension of human nature and a positive force required a radical transformation, which coincided with the emergence of liberalism. By critically exploring Foucault’s claim that Western civilization is a civilization of desire, de Beistegui crafts a provocative and original genealogy of this shift in thinking. He shows how the relationship between identity, desire, and government has been harnessed and transformed in the modern world, shaping our relations with others and ourselves, and establishing desire as an essential driving force for the constitution of a new and better social order. But is it? The Government of Desire argues that this is precisely what a contemporary politics of resistance must seek to overcome. By questioning the supposed universality of a politics based on recognition and the economic satisfaction of desire, de Beistegui raises the crucial question of how we can manage to be less governed today, and explores contemporary forms of counter-conduct. ?Drawing on a host of thinkers from philosophy, political theory, and psychoanalysis, and concluding with a call for a sovereign and anarchic form of desire, The Government of Desire is a groundbreaking account of our freedom and unfreedom, of what makes us both governed and ungovernable.

Book Books on Military Architecture Printed in Venice

Download or read book Books on Military Architecture Printed in Venice written by Paul Breman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the great days of Italian fortification literature – the century from Valle's first Venetian edition in 1524 to the appearance of Tensini in 1624 – Venice accounted for roughly as many titles as the rest of Europe together. Books on fortification were a natural for the enterprising printer-publishers of this city-state, free from the constraints of small-minded princes and their paranoid insistence on "state secrets". This annotated catalogue describes 350 books, published until the time when Venice ceased to be an independent state. It provides massive documentation taking into account the many "ghosts" created by misprints or over-zealous bibliographers and gives full collations, extensive annotations and locations of copies of all entries. An index of printers and a "bibliographie raisonnée" of the sources used, appear at the end. The thirty-five illustrations are chosen for their relevance to the subject and range from early bastion traces to emblematic portraits.
