Book excerpt: After Benjamin discovered a habitable planet, he negotiated opening the colony for humans from across the known universe. His home planet of Bootes had been isolated and inhabitants used for experiments by the Kohana. Many humans from other star system feared Kohana experiments had altered DNA of humans from Bootes. As an exchange of various human cultures is underway, those fears faded away. When Jermack fell in love with a girl from another star system, Benjamin stood proud that his son led the way for others. A small number of non-human races were afraid of humans intermixing and creating a new race. In doing so, humans could request another seat on the Council of All and upset the balance of power. Opposed to the colony, a Cold Blooded Coalition formed and contacted the Kohana for help to an end the new human colony.

Book O God Our Help in Ages Past

Download or read book O God Our Help in Ages Past written by Jeff Barnes and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-11-08 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s headlines daily confront us with the spectacle of a troubled world. Natural disasters, war, economic uncertainty, and many other issues have become part and parcel of our daily experience. Many, including those who bear the name of Christ, have lost hope in this climate. What are believers to do when confronted with the chaos of the present age? The answer can be found through a Christian engagement with history. Far from being an esoteric discipline to be studied by a learned few, a Christ-centered view of the past can transform the believer’s walk with God, providing comfort and hope in the face of the chaos that besets our world today. Through seeing the sovereign hand of God as it writes the human story, believers can question God in faith, better understand the divine purpose in suffering, more fully grasp their need for a Savior, repent from participation in present injustice, challenge the idol of nostalgia, and better understand our place within the kingdom of God.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “Brilliant and enthralling.” —The Wall Street Journal A paradigm-shifting book from an acclaimed Harvard Medical School scientist and one of Time’s most influential people. It’s a seemingly undeniable truth that aging is inevitable. But what if everything we’ve been taught to believe about aging is wrong? What if we could choose our lifespan? In this groundbreaking book, Dr. David Sinclair, leading world authority on genetics and longevity, reveals a bold new theory for why we age. As he writes: “Aging is a disease, and that disease is treatable.” This eye-opening and provocative work takes us to the frontlines of research that is pushing the boundaries on our perceived scientific limitations, revealing incredible breakthroughs—many from Dr. David Sinclair’s own lab at Harvard—that demonstrate how we can slow down, or even reverse, aging. The key is activating newly discovered vitality genes, the descendants of an ancient genetic survival circuit that is both the cause of aging and the key to reversing it. Recent experiments in genetic reprogramming suggest that in the near future we may not just be able to feel younger, but actually become younger. Through a page-turning narrative, Dr. Sinclair invites you into the process of scientific discovery and reveals the emerging technologies and simple lifestyle changes—such as intermittent fasting, cold exposure, exercising with the right intensity, and eating less meat—that have been shown to help us live younger and healthier for longer. At once a roadmap for taking charge of our own health destiny and a bold new vision for the future of humankind, Lifespan will forever change the way we think about why we age and what we can do about it.

Book The Scarlet Woman and the Red Hand

Download or read book The Scarlet Woman and the Red Hand written by Joshua T. Searle and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive description of how evangelicals in Northern Ireland interpreted the "Troubles" (1966-2007) in the light of how they read the Bible. The rich and diverse landscape of Northern Irish evangelicalism during the "Troubles" is ideally suited to this study of both the light and dark sides of apocalyptic eschatology. Searle demonstrates how the notion of apocalypse shaped evangelical and fundamentalist interpretations of the turbulent events that characterized this dark yet fascinating period in the history of Northern Ireland. The book uses this case study to offer a timely reflection on some of the most pressing issues in contemporary negotiations between culture and religion. Given the current resurgence of religious fundamentalism in the wake of 9/11, together with popular conceptions of a "clash of civilizations" and the so-called War on Terror, this book is not only an engaging academic study; it also resonates with some of the defining cultural issues of our time.

Book Globalism in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Age

Download or read book Globalism in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Age written by Albrecht Classen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it is fashionable among modernists to claim that globalism emerged only since ca. 1800, the opposite can well be documented through careful comparative and transdisciplinary studies, as this volume demonstrates, offering a wide range of innovative perspectives on often neglected literary, philosophical, historical, or medical documents. Texts, images, ideas, knowledge, and objects migrated throughout the world already in the pre-modern world, even if the quantitative level compared to the modern world might have been different. In fact, by means of translations and trade, for instance, global connections were established and maintained over the centuries. Archetypal motifs developed in many literatures indicate how much pre-modern people actually shared. But we also discover hard-core facts of global economic exchange, import of exotic medicine, and, on another level, intensive intellectual debates on religious issues. Literary evidence serves best to expose the extent to which contacts with people in foreign countries were imaginable, often desirable, and at times feared, of course. The pre-modern world was much more on the move and reached out to distant lands out of curiosity, economic interests, and political and military concerns. Diplomats crisscrossed the continents, and artists, poets, and craftsmen traveled widely. We can identify, for instance, both the Vikings and the Arabs as global players long before the rise of modern globalism, so this volume promises to rewrite many of our traditional notions about pre-modern worldviews, economic conditions, and the literary sharing on a global level, as perhaps best expressed by the genre of the fable.
