  • Author : Bobby Sullivan
  • Publisher : Akashic Books

Download or read book Revolutionary Threads written by Bobby Sullivan and published by Akashic Books. This book was released on 2018-12-04 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An American Rastafarian “offers a vibrant examination of American and African history with an anti-colonial patina . . . engaging” (Kirkus Reviews). Revolutionary Threads offers an American Rasta’s retelling of episodes in American history with an anticolonial thrust, accented by Bobby Sullivan’s own personal experiences. The book ties together various subjects while returning each time to the culture of Rastafari, social justice movements, and cooperative economics. From how we perceive history in general, America's precolonial past, and global capitalism’s early development and the resistance to it, to political prisoners and a celebration of religious tolerance, the book approaches North America with an African-centric perspective. Sullivan dispels the oversimplification of our perceptions of Rastafari, as well as other cultures, in the age of the Internet, where the loudest voices are often the most extreme and divisive. Revolutionary Threads aims to serve as a unifying agent for our all-too-connected global village, and for the resistance to the consolidation of global capital and all its excesses. “A post-hardcore rock star, community activist, and social justice intellectual offers an alternative look at countercolonial history through the lens of the Rastafari movement.” —Kirkus Reviews “Outlining his philosophical influences and backpacking through history and criss-crossing continental borders, Sullivan puts his enlightenment journey and way of life, which includes activism for social justice, prison outreach, and cooperative economics, on paper.” —The Gleaner (Jamaica) “[Sullivan] meticulously sources his work throughout, whether providing a Howard Zinn-like take on the settlement of America by Africans predating Columbus, or in discussing political prisoners like Marilyn Buck . . . an engaging, lively, well-thought book which provides a picture of Rastafarianism in action, for punks and beyond.” —Razorcake

Book The Idol in the Age of Art

Download or read book The Idol in the Age of Art written by Rebecca Zorach and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After 1500, as Catholic Europe fragmented into warring sects, evidence of a pagan past came newly into view, and travelers to distant places encountered deeply unfamiliar visual cultures, it became ever more pressing to distinguish between the sacred image and its opposite, the 'idol'. Historians and philosophers have long attended to Reformation charges of idolatry - the premise for image-breaking - but only very recently have scholars begun to consider the ways that the idol occasioned the making no less than the destruction. The present book focuses on how idols and ideas about them matter for the history of early modern objects produced around the globe, especially those created in the context of an exchange or confrontation between an 'us' and a 'them'. Ranging widely within the early modern period, the volume contributes to the project of globalizing the study of European art, bringing the continent's commercial, colonial, antiquarian, and religious histories into dialogue. Its studies of crosses, statues on columns, wax ex-votos, ivories, prints, maps, manuscripts, fountains, banners, and New World gold all frame Western 'art' simultaneously as an idea and as a collection of real things, arguing that it was through the idol that object-makers and writers came to terms with what it was that art should be, and do.

Download or read book Introduction to the Study of African Clasical sic Civilizations written by Runoko Rashidi and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was conceived as a study guide and text book for the student of African civilizations globally. It is broken down into four sections: Nile Valley Civilizations (ancient Egypt) in which a short history of Ramses, the royal dynasties, the geography, and a wide-ranging, selected bibliography of Kemet (ancient Egypt) is offered; The African Presence in Asia in which the author analyses the work of Cheikh Anta Diop on Asia, adding significantly to our knowledge of the area, a selected bibliography, The Dalits (untouchables) of India; the most startling information in this book is the author's evidence of The African Presence in Prehistoric America which goes back to 30,000 years ago. This essay is based on the innovative archaeology of Harold Sterling Gladwin and is accomplished with careful attention to detail. Here the author also examines the prehistorical presence of Africans in Britain, based on the work of MacRitchie.
