The appeal of political philosophy is that it will answer questions about justice for the sake of political action. But contemporary political philosophy struggles to live up to this promise. Since the death of John Rawls, political philosophers have become absorbed in methodological debates, leading to an impasse between two unattractive tendencies: utopians argue that philosophy should focus uncompromisingly on abstract questions of justice, while pragmatists argue that we should concern ourselves only with local efforts to ameliorate injustice. Agents of Change shows a way forward. Ben Laurence argues that we can combine utopian justice and the pragmatic response to injustice in a political philosophy that unifies theory and practice in pursuit of change. Political philosophy, on this view, is not a purely normative theory disconnected from practice. Rather, political philosophy is itself a practiceÑan exercise of practical reason issuing in action. Laurence contends that this exercise begins in ordinary life with the confrontation with injustice. Philosophy draws ideas about justice from this encounter to be pursued through political action. Laurence shows that the task of political philosophy is not complete until it asks the question ÒWhat is to be done?Ó and deliberates actionable answers.

Book excerpt: This report explores the drivers (both direct and indirect) of deforestation and forest degradation and discusses the political, economic and social opportunities and constraints that will influence the design and implementation of REDD+ in Laos. The government of Laos has long sought to curb deforestation and forest degradation, and the country is receiving considerable international attention and support to implement REDD+. However, agricultural expansion, the development of industrial tree plantations, and large hydropower, mining and infrastructure projects continue to result in deforestation, with shifting cultivation and selective logging (legal and illegal) largely blamed for forest degradation. At the same time, indirect drivers of deforestation and forest degradation are rooted in a national agenda of economic growth, characterized by incentives for foreign and domestic investment in forest management and timber harvesting. As a result, Laos is becoming an important resource frontier for transnational capital and large-scale land and natural resource investments. The consequent intensification of competition for resources poses a challenge not only for forest governance, but also for the development of REDD+ policies and initiatives. In an examination of the institutions and policies defining Laos forestry sector and REDD+, the report reflects on lessons to be learned from past forestry and economic development policies. The government of Laos has demonstrated strong political interest in REDD+, but REDD+ implementation faces major obstacles, particularly unclear carbon rights and weak governance, with the latter attributable to poor local capacity, weak coordination among stakeholders, and minimal involvement by local communities and civil society. The report makes several recommendations for achieving effective, efficient and equitable outcomes of REDD+ in Laos: capacity building of administrative and technical staff, especially at the subnational level; clarification and harmonization of land-use planning and land allocation processes; and stronger monitoring and law enforcement in areas under high threat of deforestation and forest degradation. Furthermore, an accountable and transparent mechanism for sharing the benefits of REDD+ across levels and fully accountable consultation processes must be implemented, with the participation of not only elite and powerful actors such as domestic and foreign businesses but also local groups and civil society.

This book was written to do all of the above, with stories that are part of the FBI's history. The book contains hundreds of true stories, written by hundreds of current and retired FBI Special Agents. I, as an author, am merely a messenger that put together all the stories, including mine. The author was born in a small village in Slovenia, which at that time was one of the republics of Yugoslavia, a communist country in Eastern Europe. Slovenia is now an independent country and a member of NATO. Author left Slovenia at the age of eleven, with his mother, and arrived in the U.S. on Thanksgiving Day, 1956. He was reunited with his father for the first time in eleven years, as his father left the communist country or face a certain death, when the youngster was three months old. Following graduation from John Carroll University in 1967, and ROTC commitment, author became a Cleveland, Ohio police officer, followed by service as a U.S. Army officer during the Vietnam War. In 1970, upon completion of the FBI Academy, author was sworn in as an FBI Special Agent, given credentials, a badge and a gun and started his 32 years of public service in the FBI. Stories in the book were collected during the 32 years on duty and the 12 years of retirement. Additional stories are being collected and will be published in the next book, God willing. Yes, FBI Special Agents are real people, who have left various jobs, to pursue a dream and a daily challenge in a career serving human beings. We are special, because we put our lives on the line every day to protect those that we have sworn to serve. We reflect the society around us. Our backgrounds are as varied as the people that we serve and protect. We have feelings, we cry and we laugh. We are shot at and we shoot as a last resort. We bleed and we die. We leave for work carrying a gun, a set of credentials and a badge, not knowing if we will return to our loved ones alive in one piece, at the end of the day. We are saints and we are sinners. The split-second decisions that we have to make at times may haunt us, as attorneys rehash our actions for years after their occurrence. These decisions may make the difference whether we will be judged by twelve or carried by six. All of us hope and pray, that our actions will be just and correct and we will make it home to our loving families. Many of the stories that are contained in this book will be labeled by some readers as being politically incorrect, provocative, racist and sexist. None of the stories are meant to offend you. Believe me, the stories are real and they deal with life (and death) in the real world that all of us live in today.
