Oh yeah, and a past mistake Echo thought had already been dealt with is back to settle a score. It can’t get much worse than that, right? Except, for Echo, things can always get worse.

Book Assault on the Small Screen

Download or read book Assault on the Small Screen written by Molly Ann Magestro and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades, television programs have attempted to depict some of the more troubling elements of society with a more conscientious approach. Issues that networks were once reluctant to broadcast—such as sexual abuse, sexual assault, and rape—have become frequent plot points for many popular shows. Narratives that portray important social issues could potentially affect the ways individual viewers understand such incidents in the real world, so it is important to pay close and critical attention to the stories about rape that are broadcast to mass audiences. In Assault on the Small Screen: Representations of Sexual Violence on Prime Time Television Dramas, Molly Ann Magestro examines the ways in which police and legal dramas on network and cable channels portray rape narratives. In this discussion, the author focuses on eight successful shows—NCIS, Criminal Minds, CSI, The Closer, Rizzoli & Isles, Dexter, Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, and The Good Wife. Each chapter offers a close reading and analysis of how one or more of the shows represent rape narratives and rape victims in ways that more or less address feminist understandings of rape and rape culture. The arguments in each chapter explore the specific narrative content of individual series rather than a single critical approach. Each of the eight shows considered within the book is the focus of its own argument, as the representations of rape narratives on television are as complex as issues surrounding rape can be in the real world. In a time when rape narratives are frequently making headlines, taking the time to examine and understand the messages broadcast by a medium as ubiquitous as television serves an important role in developing an understanding of rape culture. A significant step toward this understanding, Assault on the Small Screen will be of interest to scholars of film and television, media studies, gender studies, criminology, and sociology.

Book David Lynch

Download or read book David Lynch written by Greg Olson and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2008-09-29 with total page 749 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly 40 years, David Lynch's works have enthralled, mystified, and provoked viewers. Lynch's films delve into the subjective consciousness of his characters to reveal both the depraved darkness and luminous spirituality of human nature. From his experimental shorts of the 1960s to feature films like Eraserhead, The Elephant Man, Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and INLAND EMPIRE, Lynch has pushed the boundaries of cinematic storytelling. In David Lynch: Beautiful Dark, author Greg Olson explores the surreal intricacies of the director's unique visual and visceral style not only in his full-length films but also his early forays into painting and short films, as well as his television landmark, Twin Peaks. This in-depth exploration is the first full-length work to analyze the intimate symbiosis between Lynch's life experience and artistic expressions: from the small-town child to the teenage painter to the 60-year-old Internet and digital media experimenter. To fully delineate the director's life and art, Olson received unprecedented participation from Lynch, his parents, siblings, old school friends, romantic partners, children, and decades of professional colleagues, as well as on-set access to the director during the production of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. Throughout this study, Olson provides thorough analyses of the filmmaker's works as Lynch conceived, crafted, and completed them. Consequently, David Lynch: Beautiful Dark is the definitive study of one of the most influential and idiosyncratic directors of the last four decades.

Book The Assimilation of Yogic Religions through Pop Culture

Download or read book The Assimilation of Yogic Religions through Pop Culture written by Paul G. Hackett and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The image of the meditating yogi has become a near-universal symbol for transcendent perfection used to market everything from perfume and jewelry to luxury resorts and sports cars, and popular culture has readily absorbed it along similar lines. Yet the religious traditions grounding such images are often readily abandoned or caricatured beyond recognition, or so it would seem. The essays contained in The Assimilation of Yogic Religions through Pop Culture explore the references to yogis and their native cultures of India, Tibet, and China as they are found in the stories of many famous icons of popular culture, from Batman, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange to Star Trek, Doctor Who, Twin Peaks, and others. In doing so, the authors challenge the reader to look deeper into the seemingly superficial appropriation of the image of the yogi and Asian religious themes found in all manner of comic books, novels, television, movies, and theater and to carefully examine how they are being represented and what exactly is being said.

Book The Odette C Bell Fantasy Bundle

Download or read book The Odette C Bell Fantasy Bundle written by Odette C. Bell and published by Odette C. Bell. This book was released on with total page 1243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you ready for four adventure-packed fantasies from Odette C. Bell? Consisting of the complete Gladys the Guard, Agent of Light, Superheroes Don’t Wear Heels, and The Witch and the Commander, this bundle is over 300,000 words of action, adventure, and romance, so dive in today and soar free with Odette C. Bell adventures. Gladys the Guard Gladys is a mild-mannered girl, living in a mild-mannered town. Working in a local haberdashery store, she stacks pastel-colored yarns and sticks labels on jam jars. She’s single, carless, and lives with her mad grandma. The only interesting thing about her is also the saddest: Gladys is unusually good at arcade games. But when strange, yowling, terribly violent things happen in town, Gladys soon finds out she might be the only haberdashery store attendant who can stop them, and that, luckily for everyone else, her skills with plastic guns extend to the real variety. … Agent of Light Agent Mira works for a shadowy agency called (imaginatively) the Agency. She forms part of the line of defense between good and bad - between Heaven itself and the fiery depths of Hell. When she’s plunged into fights beyond her skills, they push her straight into the arms of the Agency’s finest officer, Michael. From the sudden appearance of a childlike angel, to the unwanted attention of the police, Mira won’t catch a break. Good – Hell doesn’t want her to. It has a plan, and Mira will fulfil it or be bled dry of every drop of her light and life. … Superheroes Don’t Wear Heels Annie hates superheroes, a fact she will freely and loudly admit to anyone who will listen. They are a drain on public resources and give people the mistaken belief that anyone can look good in stretch tights. If only the city spent less on keeping buffoons in capes and more on effective disaster planning, the world would be a better place. Superheroes aren't the solution; they're the problem. Annie’s so sure superheroes aren't worth the colored plastic they've been molded from, that it takes a plot of the rather epic supervillain kind to prove her wrong. It's a hard lesson to learn, and one that involves far more kabooms, pows, capes, and dashing tights-wearing men than your average reality check. But at the end of the day, a lesson’s a lesson, even if it carries a shrink ray. … The Witch and the Commander Abby is a witch; she has a broom and a cat named Charlie. But around these parts witches aren’t popular. So when she finds herself at the mercy of an ancient spell with no one to rely on but a distant man, she must count on more than her magic to survive. Pembrake can’t stand her at first. But her endearing charm and innocence soon grow on him. Dangerous, because it will drive him to protect her, and that may prove impossible.
