Book Supply Chain Management of the Canadian Forest Products Industry Under Supply and Demand Uncertainties

Download or read book Supply Chain Management of the Canadian Forest Products Industry Under Supply and Demand Uncertainties written by Shashi Kamal Shahi and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Canadian forest products industry has failed to retain its competitiveness in the global markets under stochastic supply and demand conditions. Supply chain management models that integrate the two-way flow of information and materials under stochastic supply and demand can ensure capacity-feasible production of forest industry and achieve desired customer satisfaction levels. This thesis aims to develop a real-time decision support system, using simulation-based optimization approach, for the Canadian forest products industry under uncertain market supply and demand conditions. First, a simulation-based optimization model is developed for a single product (sawlogs), single industry (sawmill) under demand uncertainty that minimizes supply chain costs and finds optimum inventory policy parameters (s, S) for all agents. The model is then extended to multi-product, multi-industry forest products supply chain under supply and demand uncertainty, using a pulp mill as the nodal agent. Integrating operational planning decisions (inventory management, order and supply quantities) throughout the supply chain, the overall cost of the supply chain is minimized. Finally, the model integrates production planning of the pulp mill with inventory management throughout the supply chain, and maximizes net annual profit of the pulp mill. It was found that incorporation of a merchandizing yard between suppliers and forest mills provides a feasible solution to handle supply and demand uncertainty. Although the merchandizing yard increases the total daily cost of the supply chain by $11,802 in the single industry model, there is a net annual cost saving of $17.4 million in the multi-product, multi-industry supply chain. Under supply and demand uncertainty without a merchandizing yard, the pulp mill is only able to operate at 10% of its full capacity and achieve a customer satisfaction level of 9%. The merchandizing yard ensures pulp mill running capacity of 70%, and customer satisfaction level of at least 50%. However, the merchandizing yard is economically viable only, if the sales price of pulp is at least $680 per tonne. Efficient and effective management of inventory throughout the supply chain, integrated with production planning not only ensures continuous operation of forest mills, but also significantly improves the customer satisfaction.

Book Post Faustmann Forest Resource Economics

Download or read book Post Faustmann Forest Resource Economics written by Shashi Kant and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current paradigm of forest economics is based on Faustmann Formulation (FF) of land expectation value proposed by Martin Faustmann. It was a great achievement by a forester to propose a formulation that captures some fundamental economic features of capital theory which. However, the followers of the FF approach have trapped themselves into the past, and have not shown any indication of economic acumen of the great Faustmann. This has resulted in a common problem in the current paradigm of forest economics, known as Faustmann Forest Resource Economics (FFRE), to prescribe the application of a single (FF) approach to all situations irrespective of the specific features of the situation. The current state of forest economics is similar to that of neoclassical economics, and is full of inefficiencies. In neoclassical economics, inefficiencies are due to its “locked-in” position in rational economic man, while in forest economics inefficiencies are due to its “locked-in” position in the FF. The focus of this volume is on the new paradigm of forest economics termed as Post-Faustmann Forest Resource Economics (PFFRE). The first chapter lays the foundation of the PFFRE, and presents the key distinctions between the FFRE and the PFFRE. The volume includes twelve other chapters that address issues related to forest economics from perspectives different than the FFRE. Chapter 2 to 6 are focused on issues related to human behavior that is different than the rational economic man, Chapter 7 and 8 on public choice theory, Chapter 9 and 10 on systems approaches, and Chapter 11 to 13 on incremental approaches to incorporate new features in the FFRE.

Book excerpt: Traditionally supply chain management has meant factories, assembly lines, warehouses, transportation vehicles, and time sheets. Modern supply chain management is a highly complex, multidimensional problem set with virtually endless number of variables for optimization. An Internet enabled supply chain may have just-in-time delivery, precise inventory visibility, and up-to-the-minute distribution-tracking capabilities. Technology advances have enabled supply chains to become strategic weapons that can help avoid disasters, lower costs, and make money. From internal enterprise processes to external business transactions with suppliers, transporters, channels and end-users marks the wide range of challenges researchers have to handle. The aim of this book is at revealing and illustrating this diversity in terms of scientific and theoretical fundamentals, prevailing concepts as well as current practical applications.

Book More than Bouncing Back

Download or read book More than Bouncing Back written by Anne Cafer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the concept of community resilience moves from the margins of practice and theoretical research to more mainstream scholarship, critical issues of conceptualization and use emerge. This is particularly true at the intersection of community development practice and community resilience theory. This book teases out limitations with current conceptualizations of community resilience, offers enhanced and alternative conceptualizations, and presents compelling case studies of new conceptualizations in action. This book is a starting place for scholarly conversations about the role of community resilience in community development practice. The frameworks presented here, will continue to gain more support in academic and non-academic arenas as resilience rhetoric increases in popularity. However, it is crucial for community practitioners to use these frameworks to actively cultivate resilience in their communities by building adaptive capacity in systematic ways. To move the field of community resilience forward, it is critical to understand the nuances of context and conditions in communities and how broader conceptualizations of resilience account for and utilize context to build adaptive capacity. This book was originally published as a special issue in the journal Community Development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenges faced by supply chains appear to be growing exponentially under the demands of increasingly complex business environments confronting the decision makers. The world we live in now operates under interconnected economies that put extra pressure on supply chains to fulfil ever-demanding customer preferences. Relative attractiveness of manufacturing as well as consumption locations changes very rapidly, which in consequence alters the economies of large scale production. Coupled with the recent economic swings, supply chains in every country are obliged to survive with substantially squeezed margins. In this book, we tried to compile a selection of papers focusing on a wide range of problems in the supply chain domain. Each chapter offers important insights into understanding these problems as well as approaches to attaining effective solutions.
